Year 2 of this successful project is off to a great start
The QPR in the Community Trust Extra Time club is now well into its 2nd year. Funding has been secured from the Football Foundation and Sport Relief to continue this extremely successful project at Loftus Road for the next 2 years. QPR in the Community Trust’s aims for the project are to improve the quality of life for individuals and forge a deeper connection with the local community, inspire change for the participants and to give them the help and support they need to live happy, healthy lives.
Older people are a group that both the Football Foundation and Sport Relief wish to engage with and this project tackles two important issues for older people, physical health emotional wellbeing and social isolation. The main aims of this programme are:
•To provide exercise opportunities so as to increase physical activity. Physical activity improves both physical health and emotional wellbeing. It is one of the most important factors in maintaining a good quality of life.
•To provide a programme that improves muscle strength, balance and mobility.
•To provide social networking opportunities which can help address some of the social exclusion and isolation issues faced by older people.
•To increase the target groups interest and connections with the professional game.
In our first year (November 09 to July 10) we ran six week blocks of physical activity which included tai chi, croquet, boules, aerobics and line dancing. Also social activities such as quizzes, parties, bingo and a trip to Brighton enhanced the positive impact of the group.
We started the second year of this project in September and since then the group have participated in Tai Chi and Aerobics. In November we celebrated the groups 1st Birthday with a cake and a visit from Spark.
This year there is more of an emphasis on health, so at the end of each 5 week block of physical activity we have a health session taken by local NHS professionals. The first session involved Health Champions delivering health checks, the second session was an introduction to the Expert Patient Programme (EPP). EPP is a self-management course providing tools and techniques to help you to take control of your health and manage your health condition better on a daily basis. After Christmas local NHS staff are coming to speak to the group about Healthy Eating and Falls prevention.
We have over 50 members now registered with the Extra Time project and a weekly attendance of 30-35. They attend the sessions at Loftus Road every Wednesday from 10-12noon. It is an incredibly happy, sociable and fun group and both the participants and those that run the project find it very rewarding. It is having an extremely positive impact on both the health and social interaction of the group.
To end off 2010 the Extra Time club had their Christmas Party at Loftus Road. This was a fantastic event held at the club and the group were delighted to meet R’s player Peter Ramage who attended the party. Many thanks to the Official Supporters Club who raised the money to enable us to host the Christmas Party, the Trust and the Extra Time members are extremely grateful.
