Britton happy with signing of bad boy LeonPublished on
Fri Dec 03 Bath City boss Adie Britton has defended his decision to sign Leon Jeanne, saying the club's limited resources sometimes force him to take a gamble on players with checkered pasts.
Former Wales under-21 midfielder Jeanne had his professional career at QPR and Cardiff City brought to a premature end by a string of disciplinary problems and cocaine addiction.
He has since played for 12 clubs in the past eight years and was released by Weston-super-Mare after just two appearances last season due to a lack of fitness.
But Britton has decided to take a punt on the 30-year-old, who is friends with Cardiff-based City players Kaid Mohamed and Adie Harris, and believes Jeanne can put his problems behind him.
"We know all about Leon's history but I am really only interested in the here and now," said Britton.
"I just see a very talented player who is working very hard on his
fitness and is losing weight rapidly.
"He is bright and chirpy around the dressing room and he's a confident lad.
"Also, we do not have a great deal of money so when someone comes along and says he will play for nothing then that makes it more attractive.
"If you are a wealthy club you can go out and get the tried and tested article. The nature of Bath City is we are the poor relations and we have to take a few chances along the way.
"If I had been concerned about past histories we would not have signed a number of players in the past five-and-a-half years.
"There are some who other managers have tried to warn me off that have gone on to do a really good job for us.
"I'm looking forward to working with Leon.
"He has a lot of work to do before he is fully match fit but he should be okay to come off the bench in the next couple of weeks."
Another player Britton expects to be pushing for a first-team place soon is Lewis Hogg, who completed his first full training session on Tuesday after being sidelined for the past two months with a groin problem.
"Lewis has not really suffered from injury in the past and it has been
difficult to cope mentally with being out for so long," said Britton.
"We are very much looking forward to getting him back.
"We've done well while he's been out but, since Joe Edwards went back to Bristol City and while Marley Watkins is out, we've been lacking width and Lewis will provide that."
