Football: Taylor sees Staines back to winning ways

SCOTT Taylor’s double led Staines to a first win in five matches at home to Bishop's Stortford on Saturday.
The former Bolton and Brentford striker, now an electrician, found the spark to get the Swans flying again, hitting his first league goals of the season on a day when Staines might have had six or seven.
Taylor was a menace from minute one, when only a poor touch from Leroy Griffiths' through-ball prevented him opening the scoring.
And just two minutes later the 34-year-old was again racing clear, but with the angle tight he tried to square for Howard Newton and the ball was scrambled behind.
Stortford’s Michael Bakare produced the first shot on target on nine minutes but it proved an easy gather for Louis Wells.
Taylor was again left in the clear when the assistant failed to flag for offside, but Ross Kitteridge made himself big to block the shot.
Another sweeping move on 26 minutes found Griffiths on the left side of the box, but the former QPR man miscued his shot wide.
Then controversy followed on the half-hour as Griffiths’ ball struck a hand inside the area, yet referee Daniel Cook deemed the offence outside the box.
A goal had to come and when Taylor got clear again from Griffiths’ header on 33 minutes he made no mistake in firing past Kitteridge.
Spurred on, Staines doubled their lead when Stortford were penalised for Matt Jones’s handball and Griffiths fired home from the spot.
Jones partially atoned for the error when he cleared Yado Mambo’s close-range effort off the line at the start of the second half.
The Swans’ lead could have been cut on 66 minutes when Wells dropped Reece Prestedge’s corner, but no red shirt was on hand to stab the ball home.
It should have been all over on 70 minutes as Taylor worked the ball to Griffiths whose shot hit the inside of the post before rolling along the line and striking the other upright.
Griffiths was first to the loose ball and he squared for Marc Charles-Smith, who from inside the six-yard box managed to strike the post again - the third time in a matter of seconds.
But the points were sealed on 80 minutes as Taylor beat the offside trap for the umpteenth time, stepped inside his marker and slid the ball home.
