923 managers have lost their jobs since Fergie took over at
Old Trafford. Who'd be a boss with pressure like that?
By Ian Ladyman

Few things in football have left their mark on Sir Alex Ferguson quite like the night he saw his hero and inspiration Jock Stein collapse and die from a heart attack on the touchline at Ninian Park in September 1985.
In a week that has seen one Barclays Premier League manager — Newcastle United’s Joe Kinnear — rushed to hospital with chest pains and two others — Tony Adams and Luiz Felipe Scolari — lose their jobs, one particular part of Ferguson’s recollection is telling.
‘The strains of the second half were extreme,’ said the Manchester United manager, who was alongside Stein as Scotland forced a late draw with Wales to clinch their place in the 1986 World Cup finals in Mexico.
‘My wife Cathy was watching the game on television and told me later that when the cameras were on the Scotland bench I looked awful, as if I was the one about to have a heart attack.’
The master: Sir Alex reigns supreme at Old Trafford, but less fortunate managers run a real risk to their health
Although part of Ferguson’s anxious demeanour that dreadful night reflected his worries for the great Stein, the image of Cathy watching her husband live — and breathing the tension and the drama of a crucial football match — is emotive.
Put it this way, Cathy is not alone. The fact that 923 managers have lost their jobs in England since Ferguson took over at Old Trafford in 1986 tells its own story. Such are the increasing pressures felt by coaches, the League Managers’ Association now offer members six-monthly health check-ups — and the results have been startling.

Look who Sir Alex has seen off in his time: The 923 who have come and gone...
Winning four games earned the England rugby team a gong, so 20-year world-beater Giggs deserves a big Knight out at Palace, insists Fergie
According to last year’s figures, 40 per cent of managers in this country have high blood pressure. Sixty per cent have problems with cholesterol, while a very worrying one in 10 has issues with gambling.
Football has long been a stressful business. Shake the autobiographies of many of the game’s great managers and the anecdotes will tumble out. However, the signs would appear to indicate that things are getting worse.
Managers such as Kinnear, along with previous health scare survivors Gerard Houllier and Glenn Roeder, may not yet know the full extent of how much the game they love has harmed them.
High pressure: Kinnear (second right) has a touchline bust-up with Hull City counterpart Phil Brown (front)
And while the likes of Scolari will walk away from their failures well compensated, managers further down the divisions do not have handsome compensation clauses to comfort them as things begin to go wrong.
‘Managers in the lower divisions suffer ridiculous conditions,’ said Ferguson at an LMA conference this season. ‘It is something that we discuss — but something we need to discuss more and more.
‘The game these days requires strong characters who can stand up to their boards.’
Trigger-happy chairmen have long been a part of domestic football. The likes of Aston Villa godfather ‘Deadly’ Doug Ellis did not earn their reputations — or their nicknames — for nothing. Nevertheless, with decisions on managers’ livelihoods now being made from plush offices and palaces in places such as Russia, Thailand, America and the Middle East, it is becoming harder to meet — never mind stand up to — many owners and chairmen.
Dave Bassett, the former Wimbledon, Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest manager and current LMA board member, said: ‘We used to think we had it bad with chairmen who didn’t understand the game, but maybe we didn’t. These days there is definitely less tolerance. The owners are a different breed.
Old school: Dave 'Harry' Bassett during his stint at Leicester
‘Managers don’t work as hard these days in terms of travelling to see games and doing the actual coaching and so on. But the pressures and the scrutiny they come under are worse.
‘There are few people like Sir Alex left. He runs the club from top to bottom and that’s how it should be. But apart from him and perhaps Arsene Wenger, it is not allowed to happen anywhere else.
‘Apparently the players were consulted about Tony Adams’ future at Portsmouth. With respect, what the hell do the players know?
‘What concerns me is the toll on the managers lower down the leagues. It’s one thing being sacked by Chelsea. Quite another losing your job at Chester or Chesterfield.’
Bassett once allowed himself to be wired up to a heart monitor during a game at Bolton when he was briefly in charge at Leicester. It showed up a minor — and common — heart irregularity.
One of English football’s newest managers is Portugal’s Paulo Sousa, who won the Champions League twice as a player with Juventus and Borussia Dortmund but has now decided to test himself as a coach at QPR.
Having replaced Iain Dowie — sacked early in the season — Sousa said last night: ‘There are great demands now but how you react to the pressure is down to the individual. You have to be in control but you have to be realistic, both the club and yourself. ‘When that becomes blurred is when problems occur and tensions increase.’

923 managers have lost their jobs since Fergie took over at
Old Trafford. Who'd be a boss with pressure like that?
