Watford 3 QPR 1
QPR Official Site
MATCH REPORT.
Watford raced into a two-goal lead at Vicarage Road thanks to a rare brace from defender Neil Cox.
Graham Taylor's side went ahead after 81 seconds when Cox burst through to head in Paul Robinson's corner.
And after 20 minutes Watford doubled their lead with Robinson again providing the flag-kick from the left and Cox again on target.
This time the former Middlesbrough and Aston Villa man finished with a strong header from further out which keeper Lee Harper was unable to prevent finding the net.
Despite Watford forcing a succession of corners and threatening to increase their lead, the game was quite open with Rangers keeping their heads up.
Richard Langley went close with a header from Peter Crouch's centre and Langley also curled a free-kick just wide.
The nearest Rangers came to creating a clear opening however was when Sam Koejoe, running away from goal, attempted to clip back a shot from a diminishing angle.
But when under pressure, Watford broke well. Nordin Wooter fired over in a break-away raid and then, after a superb passing movement, turned and saw his shot hit the post.

BBC Report
Saturday, 14 October, 2000, 13:34 GMT 14:34 UK Watford 3-1 QPR
Watford took over the top of the First Division for 24 hours at least on the strength of this victory against QPR.
Graham Taylor's side got off to a flying start at Vicarage Road, moving ahead after just 81 seconds.
Within that time the visitors had gone close with a Richard Langley header to a Peter Crouch centre.
But Watford took the lead when a Paul Robinson corner was met by full-back Neil Cox who headed firmly home.
Rangers had a couple of half chances in the ensuing minutes with Langley curling a free-kick just wide and Sammy Koejoe failing to find the target when he sent in an angled shot.
Frustrated
In the 21st minute, Watford increased the lead with Cox again heading home from a Robinson corner.
Rangers came out in the second half and pegged Watford back, deservedly reducing the arrears after 54 minutes.
A long cross from the left found Crouch who nodded down for Karl Connolly to go though unchecked and score past Alec Chamberlain.
Eleven minutes later Watford restored their two-goal advantage.
Heidar Helguson nodded the ball on and despite a spirited challenge from Clarke Carlisle, Gifton Noel-Williams went through and clipped the ball high into the far corner of the net.
Lee Harper frustrated Noel-Williams again when the striker went through onto a pass by Nordin Wooter.
His first shot was blocked by the keeper who then parried the follow up attempt and grabbed the ball as it span to the line.
Harper saved from Helguson and Noel-Williams went just wide with a header as Watford cruised to the top of the table.
Watford: Chamberlain, Cox, Robinson, Page, Palmer, Hyde, Wooter, Noel-Williams, Helguson, Ward, Nielsen. Subs: Day, Gibbs, Smith, Easton, Foley.
QPR: Harper, Morrow, Kulcsar, Carlisle, Warren, Langley, Darlington, Perry, Wardley, Crouch, Koejoe. Subs: Miklosko, Peacock, Connolly, Rose, Bruce.
Referee: P Richards (Preston).

There are many, many QPR-Watford links: From on the coaching side: Kenny Jackett and Mike Keen and Glen Roeder and Frank Sibley; to on the playing side, Steve Palmer and Lee Cook and Paul Furlong. And over the years quite a few others who played for both: From Ian Morgan and Tony Currie on down to Danny Shittu and Gavin Mahon and Chris Day. And today's latest loan from Bolton, Helguson is merely the latest (hopefully making more of an impact than Ngone and Foley) -Snippet: Until about a year ago, Watford had a fabulous fanzine website - Blind, Stupid and Desperate (which can still be read; just not updated) www.bsad.org/index.html
