Canary Account raises £2.9m for club
Norwich City Football Club is celebrating after it was revealed that fans saving in the popular Canary Account have now netted more than £2.9m for the club.
The Canary Account, which is run by the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society, allows supporters to earn interest for themselves and a bonus for the football club.
At today's game at Carrow Road against Bristol City, majority shareholder Michael Wynn Jones will receive this year's cheque for £280,190.
Throughout 2009, three Canary Account holders every month will be randomly selected to win one of the following prizes - an NCFC match day experience, £100 credited to their Canary Account or a signed Norwich City football.
Plus all Canary Account holders, or any supporter that opens a Canary Account before March 31, 2009, will also be entered in a draw to win one of four 2009-10 Norwich City season tickets.
There will be many more fantastic prizes up for grabs throughout the rest of the year, including England versus Croatia tickets at Wembley in September.
There is also one big cash prize - if you are a Canary Account holder or you open an account during 2009, you will be automatically placed into a prize draw at the end of this year to start 2010 with an extra £2,010 deposited into your Canary Account.
The cash sum Norwich City receives each year from fans saving money in the Canary Account is equivalent to 1pc of the average total balance held in the account during the previous 12 months.
Today's cheque will bring the total handed over to more than £2.9m since the initiative was launched 12 years ago.
The N&P's branch manager at Plumstead Road, Paul Uppiah, said: “I am delighted to be presenting the club with this year's annual payment. It is brilliant that fans are continuing to save for Norwich City considering that in the current tough financial climate, saving money is not always possible for some people.
“It is a credit to the fans that we have now presented the club with over £2.9m since the account was launched.”
Norwich City's chief executive, Neil Doncaster, said: “To once again receive such a significant amount from supporters saving in the Canary Account is a fantastic achievement.
“We are very grateful to all supporters who have saved within the account for many years and also for the wonderful way Norwich and Peterborough Building Society staff throughout the county have got behind it. We are proud to be able to once again see how a strong relationship with one of our key sponsors can benefit the club and our supporters.”
Supporters can sign up for a Canary Account by visiting their nearest Norwich and Peterborough branch, or by logging on to www.npbs.co.uk/canaries, where they can sign up for an online savings account and find out about all the discounts and savings available to account holders.
