Brief BBC Summary in total Football League clubs increase payments to agents Middlesbrough spent the most of any club last year Football League clubs increased their payments to agents by £3.9m in the past year to a total of more than £12.7m. The bulk of the outlay came from Championship clubs who paid out over £10.1m, while £2.2m came from League One and £366,000 from League Two. One particular agent was paid 396 times out of a total of 2,392 transactions between 1 July 2009 and 30 June 2010. The League has been publishing the figures since September 2003 as part of their bid for transparency. Of the 72 clubs, 14 did not pay anything to agents, while a further 23 clubs paid less than £10,000. Given the current economic climate, it is worrying to see such a significant amount leaking from the game Greg Clarke - Football League chairman Middlesbrough spent the most on agents' fees, with £1,464,200 being paid out as a result of 29 transactions. Newcastle, now back in the Premier League, were the only other club to spend seven figures, with the St James' Park outfit paying £1,073,076 over 39 transactions. Southampton (£401,248) spent the most in League One, while Notts County (£246,483) accounted for over two-thirds of the money spent by League Two clubs. New Football League chairman Greg Clarke has expressed concern at the increase and has urged clubs to cut their cloth accordingly over the coming 12 months. "Given the current economic climate, it is worrying to see such a significant amount leaking from the game," said Clarke. "This year's figures demonstrate a considerable increase on those of last season and it is essential that clubs work to reduce this liability over the coming campaign." The 14 clubs not to pay anything to agents were Accrington, Barnet, Bournemouth, Chesterfield, Crewe, Dagenham, Darlington, Exeter, Hereford, Lincoln, Macclesfield, Port Vale, Stockport and Tranmere. newsvote.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/eng_div_1/8924210.stm

Their fees I feel are part and parcel of the whole enterprise, and in many important ways, after the deregulation of football salaries ,have accounted for the massive increases in the players salaries. Still it was done under the auspices of the FA and will continue unabated. Man U just signed a Portugues for 13 mil who had never played in premier football. The agents will activate and be catalysts for these types of moves.

Wow I could have headlined my blog post: "Among Football League Clubs, QPR Pay Out the Highest Agents Fees in London" Standard Less for football agents in London 18.08.10 Football League clubs paid £12.7million in agents' fees last season — a rise of almost £4m from the previous year — but London sides weren't among the biggest spenders. Middlesbrough topped the table of figures released by the League today with payments of £1.4m and although Queens Park Rangers spent most in London with £465,240, that was only the eighth largest sum overall. Barnet and Dagenham & Redbridge were among 14 clubs not to give agents anything but League Two champions Notts County, who started last season under the ill-fated reign of Munto Finance and with Sven-Goran Eriksson at the club, paid £246,483. That figure was £212,00 more than the next biggest spender in the division, Shrewsbury. Fees paid by London clubs — QPR £465,240; Watford £294,684; Crystal Palace £221,800; Charlton £123,490; Millwall £99,678, Brentford £68,100; Leyton Orient £30,000; Barnet £0; Dagenham £0. www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard-sport/football/article-23868328-fees-paid-to-agents-rise-in-football-league.do

I wonder if these figures include the £30k per transaction payments to Paladini as claimed by WATRB's top ITK man Eghamhoop? I'm certainly not alluding to anything like that - I'm just curious as to what players these fees relate to, and the ratio between the cost of the players and these agent's fees. I'm interested because QPR have paid these fees and it's not come out of any of the owner's pockets, so are we getting value for money?

What would we be interesting would be if the accounts (when they ever get officially published by the club) offered a real, detailed break down on spending. Where exactly does money go...

Guardian/Matt Scott
Football League chairman orders clubs to end 45% rise in agents' fees • 72 member clubs handed over more than £12.7m last year • It is essential clubs work to reduce this liability - Greg Clarke Greg Clarke, chairman of the Football League, has demanded a stop to the "significant leakage" of money seeping out of football in agents' fees paid by clubs outside the Premier League. In total, agents received £12.7m across the 396 transactions carried out over the 12 months to this June, a rise of nearly 45%. There was a record percentage of transactions – transfers and loan deals, or contract negotiations – that committed clubs to paying agents. At 16.6%, it was exactly double the amount of two years ago. Due to the increase in the number of transactions using middlemen, the average sum earned from each one did fall slightly as against the 2008-09 season, from just under £38,500 to £32,171. Yet the £12.7m paid out is a huge sum in the context of the revenues of Football League clubs. In the 2008-09 season, the entire turnover of Blackpool, promoted to the Premier League last season, amounted to £6.9m. "Given the current economic climate, it is worrying to see such a significant amount leaking from the game," Clarke said. "This year's figures demonstrate a considerable increase on those of last season and it is essential that clubs work to reduce this liability over the coming campaign." The use of agents is not a prerequisite to success. Blackpool accounted for only £40,000 of the overall fees paid to agents during their promotion season, the second-lowest sum in the Championship after Sc**thorpe United's £33,300. But those sums were the exceptions. The two other promoted clubs, West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United, paid out more than £2m of the £10.1m committed to agents. Each of the seven deals Newcastle made using agents paid out an average of more than £150,000 to the middleman. That was against an average of £11,748 for every other deal involving a Championship side. The figures also showed only 14 of the 72 Football League clubs were capable of conducting their own negotiations without the assistance of hired help. Dagenham & Redbridge managed to conduct 54 transactions – 22 player transfers and 21 loans, as well as 11 other contract negotiations – without paying a penny to agents. There is even a possibility that the overall sums paid to agents last season will increase further, since the figures related only to guaranteed fees and "do not include any contingent payments based on future events [such as] promotion, retention of divisional status, player appearances etc". www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/aug/18/greg-clarke-football-league-agents
