Robert Fleck’s career was a rollercoaster ride to say the least
By John Harding August 13, 2010
Robert Fleck signs for Chelsea in a £2,100,000 deal from Norwich City. Whilst in his first spell with Norwich, Robert quickly becomes a fan favourite. He is leading scorer for four consecutive seasons scoring a total of 66 goals in 181 appearances (15 as substitute).
As the club historian puts it ‘you name it and it happened to him during his stay at Carrow Road as he had a court case, various club fines, injuries (four knee operations and broken ribs), transfer requests and constant speculation on whether he was staying or not and goals galore’.
He is also sent off three times but wins Scottish full international honours including playing in the 1990 World Cup finals in Italy. Robert recalls his Chelsea move: “Three days before the season started I went down to London to see a friend. Norwich made a big to-do because I hadn't turned up for the photo session.
“I spoke to Tottenham, I didn't fancy that. The next day, I spoke to Ken Bates and that was the place I wanted to go.”
The move to Chelsea is not successful, however, and Robert makes just 40 appearances for the London side scoring just three goals. He eventually returns to Carrow Road on loan in August 1995, the transfer later made permanent for a fee of £750,000. In February 1999, it is announced that Robert is retiring from football due to a back injury.
1977
Kenny Dalglish makes his Liverpool debut in a 0-0 draw with Manchester United at Wembley in the Charity Shield. The trophy is shared between the two clubs.
1955
A Great Britain side loses 4-1 to a Rest of Europe eleven at Windsor Park in a game staged to celebrate the Irish FA's 75th anniversary.
1936
Adolf Hitler and Germany fail to get any votes at the FIFA Congress in a bid to stage the 1938 World Cup. Two other nations, Argentina and France, put in applications with the European nation running away by a 19 to 4 vote count.
