SOUTHWELL TO HOST MASCOT DERBY

On Tuesday 3 August, The Football League and Marie Curie Cancer Care will officially launch their charity partnership at Southwell Racecourse, Nottinghamshire with the first ever 'Daffodil Derby'.

Starting at 7.45pm and forming part of the evening's racing schedule, the derby will see furry mascots from across The Football League, as well as Marie Curie's own 'Daffy', take part in a one furlong dash to kick-start the fundraising for Marie Curie.

Prizes on offer for the winning mascots include a Day for Two with the Red Arrows and a year's subscription to World Soccer magazine.

There will also be prizes for the Mascot who can raise the most money for Marie Curie Cancer Care on the JustGiving website at www.justgiving.com/footballleague2010-11, with every £20 raised paying for an hour's nursing care for terminally ill people.

Both football and racing fans and their families are being encouraged to attend the racing and the evening's entertainment which sees five piece band 'Urban Intro' playing live in the grandstand.

Marie Curie Cancer Care, which provides care, free of charge, to terminally ill patients in their own homes and in its hospices, was chosen following a vote of over 25,000 fans last season to be The Football League's official charity for the 2010/11 campaign.

As a result, the charity will benefit from unrivalled exposure across The League, including support from all 72 clubs.

This was very gratefully received by the Willow Foundation and means a lot more seriously ill young adults can enjoy a special day out because of your efforts.

Whaddney the Robin finishes 17th in grand national

- WHADDNEY the Cheltenham Town football club mascot put in a fine performance at the 2009 Mascot Grand National today.
- The big bird romped home in 17th place out of a field of 64 mascots from across the UK in the race which was held at Huntingdon Racecourse in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.
- A Kiwi dressed as a stag won the mascot showdown.
New Zealander Heath Crawford, 25, - mascot for Huntingdon Rugby Club - cruised to victory in the race.
- He defeated mascots including Sheffield United’s Captain Blade, Norwich City’s Captain Canary, Bradford City’s City Gent, Northampton Town’s Clarence the Dragon, Charlton Athletic’s Floyd, Exeter City’s Grecian The Lion, AFC Wimbledon’s Haydon the Womble, Cambridge United’s Marvin the Moose, Derby County’s Rammie, Nottingham Forest’s Robin Hood, Mansfield Town’s Sammy the Stag and Queens Park Rangers’ Spark.
It was the 11th time that the Mascot Grand National had been run prior to a race meeting at Huntingdon.

Football League - DAFFODIL DERBY MASCOTS REVEALED

With just over a week to go until the Daffodil Derby, the first group of competing Football League mascots at the event at Southwell Racecourse has been announced.

Currently, 22 Football League mascots - plus Daffy the Daffodil - have signed up to the race on Tuesday 3 August which has been designed to launch the fundraising for Marie Curie Cancer Care - the Official Charity Partner of The Football League for the 2010/11 season.

MASCOTS GEAR UP FOR DAFFODIL DERBY

The final line-up for the Daffodil Derby has been confirmed with 27 Football League mascots due to run at the event on Tuesday 3 August at Southwell Racecourse, Nottinghamshire.

Mascots from up and down the country are competing in the one furlong dash alongside Marie Curie's Daffy the Daffodil to kick-start the fundraising for the charity which was selected by fans to be The Football League's Official Charity Partner for the 2010/11 season.

Forming part of the evening's meet, the race will be started at 7.45pm by TV personality Tim Lovejoy and followed by a presentation for the winner with prizes including a Day for Two with the Red Arrows.

There will also be prizes for the Mascot who can raise the most money for Marie Curie Cancer Care on the JustGiving website at www.justgiving.com/footballleague2010-11, with every £20 raised paying for an hour's nursing care for terminally ill people.

The Football League has announced Marie Curie Cancer Care as its Official Charity Partner for the 2010/11 season. The charity, which provides care, free of charge, to terminally ill patients in their own homes and in its hospices, was chosen following a vote of over 25,000 Football League fans last season.

Fundraising activities are set to include bucket collections and fan initiatives, as well as a dedicated week of action from 7th to 13th March 2011 where all 72 League clubs will stage a game in support of Marie Curie.

SPARK'S A 'NON-RUNNER'

It is with much regret that we announce Spark has had to withdraw from this evening's Daffodil Derby mascot race - in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care - at Southwell.

Spark has been in training with our Community Team for their upcoming Charity Cricket match and last night tripped and hurt his knee.

He will have some treatment this week to ensure he is in good shape for the big kick-off on Saturday.

Freeview: Filbert Falls At Final Furlong

As part of his very own pre-season training City's much loved mascot, Filbert Fox made the trip to Southwell Racecourse to take part in the Marie Curie Care Daffodil Derby.

The furlong sprint pitted Filbert against 21 of his mascot rivals throughout the Football League in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care, the Football League's Official Charity for the 2010-2011 season.

TV Presenter, Tim Lovejoy was on hand to start the race in aid of the worthy cause but Filbert was sadly lacking in pre-season fitness finishing over half way in the field in 10th place.

Leicester City spokesperson, Jamie Tabor spoke of the club's pride at being involved in the event:

"It is great to be able to support such a fun event for a great cause. Filbert will be bitterly disappointed to lose out to some of his rivals but he was extremely well received and helped to raise a smile amongst the many Marie Curie volunteers in attendance which is what the event is all about."

Filbert, while a Fox of few words himself was said to be disappointed but proud to have been a part of a great fundraising effort for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
