Torquay United manager Paul Buckle was delighted with his young Gulls as they beat Plymouth Argyle 3-1 in their opening Plainmoor pre-season friendly.
United rallied from conceding an early Craig Noone goal to level through summer signing Lloyd Macklin before half time.
Last season's 15-goal top scorer Elliot Benyon made it two goals in as many friendlies to put the Gulls 2-1 ahead in the 55th minute and won the penalty converted by skipper Nicky Wroe in the last minute of normal time.
Buckle said: "It was a terrific turnaround. They did great to come back from conceding the early goal to show a lot of character.
"In the main they are a group of young lads; but there is a great atmosphere about the place and they are making that happen. I want it to be like that because then you get the type of football we played against Plymouth the other night.
"Now we want to take that into the game against Queens Park Rangers."
Buckle's Gulls – who beat Weymouth 5-1 away in their pre-season opener – host Neil Warnock's Championship QPR side tomorrow night at Plainmoor at 7.30.
Buckle, whose side also play Bristol City in their pre-season warm-up, said: "It's important we play sides like Plymouth and Championships sides like QPR and Bristol City because we have got Reading here in the League Cup in the opening week of the season.
"We need to know how to play against quality sides and learn as much about that as we can now, try out different formations and take the most from these games that we can because it could prove to be very important in a month's time."
As he hoped, Buckle was able to pair on-loan Chesterfield striker Martin Gritton and Chris Zebroski in attack against Argyle from the start.
The Gull boss said: "Gritts has got everything I am looking for in a target man, he did what I hoped he would do, what I know he can do and that's why we have got him here."
Buckle is anxious that he has options and versatility all over the park, especially going forward. He added: "The great thing about Zebs is that he can play through the middle or out wide with his pace and ability. We have got a number of players who can play in a number of positions.
"It was great to be able to start Eunan (O'Kane) in the centre of midfield, Lathaniel (Rowe-Turner) at the centre of the back and Saul (Halpin) out on the wing.
"Eunan was outstanding and Lathaniel's was different class considering he is only 19 and what he was up against. You don't get to beat a team like Plymouth without being at it for 90 minutes – and we will need more of the same against QPR."
