STATEMENT FROM BLUES CHAIRMAN
Posted on: Tue 22 Jun 2010
Chairman Ron Martin has today issued the following statement:
During the last month I have had operations on both knees and which was necessary as a direct result of my earlier commitment to sport over many years. Following a week in hospital I have been largely recuperating at home and still now after four weeks am unable to walk without the aid of crutches. Whilst my left knee has healed well the right knee continues to give me acute pain. Following a meeting with the surgeon last Monday night (14 June 2010) and examining further x-rays I am now scheduled to be readmitted to hospital on Thursday (24 June 2010) for corrective surgery. This will hopefully remedy the problem and therefore pain with a swift return to normality.
Following a fall at home on Tuesday 15 June, a lady who carries out domestic chores for my wife, and to whom I have rarely spoken during her two year employment, offered to help me up - something I neither asked for or wanted but she assisted nevertheless. Once I was back on my feet the woman continued to work as normal to complete her cleaning etc for some further 20-30 minutes before leaving the house at her scheduled time of 1:30pm and saying goodbye to me when she left.
Later that evening the police called to my home and I was required to provide a statement upon an "incident" at Rayleigh Police Station. My wife also provided a statement.
I truly love the football industry and I am committed to the future of Southend United. However as Chairman of the football club comes profile which can often be a burden as well as a benefit and one that is not controllable. Nevertheless this is something I have tried to accept with good grace in the best interests of the Club but that is not always possible as sometimes it brings with it a downside of unwarranted and often intrusive attention, which I can assure you very often proves to be extremely upsetting for me and my family. This event, as you may imagine, is particularly upsetting for my wife and two sons for it is completely without foundation.
I will defend any unwarranted assertions against me and my family vigorously.
In the meantime I will not be deflected from our objective to rebuild the team and recreate the success on the pitch that we all crave.
