HENDON'S CONTRACT TERMINATED
Posted on: Wed 28 Apr 2010
Team manager Ian Hendon has had his contract with Barnet terminated after a fifth successive defeat at Accrington Stanley left the side still needing two points from their final two games to ensure League 2 status.
Barnet, who topped the table briefly in September, have slumped to 21st in the table with only four wins in and four draws in 22 games this year.
Paul Fairclough, Hendon's predecessor as manager, will take over for the final two games - starting at Grimsby Town this Saturday. The Bees are four points above Grimsby and with a far better goal difference. Their final fixture is at home to promoted Rochdale.
Chairman Tony Kleanthous and Fairclough have called a meeting in the Durham Suite at Underhill tomorrow evening at 8 o'clock to answer questions from any concerned supporters.
Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Peter Shreeves ends his short term contract as adviser to Hendon on Friday.
The chairman, who has never dismissed a manager in his 16 years with Barnet, said: "Ian is a wholehearted hard working guy who was a great captain for the club and led us out of the Conference under Paul Fairclough.
"We gave him his chance in management midway through last season and he led us clear of the relegation area. As a result we gave him a two year contract and the team started brightly enough. But things have fallen away and, although we brought in Peter Shreeves to help him, results have not improved and attendances have dipped. I have supported Ian throughout and given him every chance. I take full responsibility for appointing him and also perhaps for not taking action sooner. I am still sure that given the chance he will make a very good manager.
"Barnet simply cannot afford relegation and, after considering several options we are turning to Paul Fairclough, who achieves good results for the England C side, has experience and knows this club and the players"
Fairclough has recently coached the U18 Centre of Excellence side to some good results.
Hendon was told the news this morning after arriving home in the early hours from Accrington.
The decision was not announced by the club until it became official this afternoon -- TV ran the story before it was confirmed.
