DAVID BECKHAM IMPERSONATOR HAS AUSTRALIAN WORLD CUP FANS FOOLED
FOOTIE fans in Australia fell for an April Fools beauty yesterday.
A bogus news report claimed David Beckham, 34, would coach their World Cup squad.
News spread like wildfire Down Under when radio station ABC broadcast a spoof interview with a Becks impersonator.
The faker conned gullible listeners that he was to become manager of the Socceroos.
The “former England captain” told listeners the move had come about after he was ruled out of the England World Cup squad by his torn Achilles.
The Becks imitator told ABC: “I’m really thrilled to be part of this group. I just can’t wait to meet up with the lads and get the campaign under way.”
The Australian FA was besieged with calls from delighted fans. Even the Sports Minister rang up to congratulate them on their coup.
One duped fan said: “This is just too good to be true. Beckham coming to Australian soccer!” Newspapers ran stories saying Becks would lead them to glory, while travel agents saw a surge of inquiries about packages to the World Cup in South Africa.
The Sydney Morning Herald said the deal was sealed after Football Federation Australia chairman Frank Lowy sent Becks a fruit basket and get well card last month.
England legend Terry Venables, 67, who went on to coach Australia after Euro ’96, was also called by sports journalists.
The Aussies had practically packed their bags for South Africa until ABC admitted that the story was a hoax.
Listeners soon began ringing in after realising they had been fooled. One said: “I’m blushing. I feel like an idiot.”
BAD news folks, our story yesterday about the Olympic Tower was not an April Fool, as many of you suspected. They really are spending £20million on the “crane wreck”.
