tell your fellow countrymen to stop calling our sport soccer. We're relying on you ro spread the word. I've not too long come back from Florida where I had a discussion with some fool who keeps insisiting on calling our sport soccer, sayng their sport was the real football.
I asked him why would you call a sport football when approx 90% of the sport is played with hands. He had this dumbf**k look on his face like that thought had never occured to him before. His reponse was "Well what should we call it then" I tried informing the idiot that Personally I don't care what they call their sport, more concerned about what they insist on calling our sport. He then asked what we called their sport in England I told him we call it American football and ours is called Football. He agreed not to call it soccer anymore. Then just as things were peaceful between us I asked him why in Baseball their competition is called the world series when it's only played in America. Heh Heh heh.
Spread the word Report, spread the word

I am in the states right now and will answer for Report. Grid football was the original name for american football which was modelled after rugby football which is played with hands and more feet than US football. The original concept was for U. S to have its own sports uniquely different from its original colonial owners. Association football is played with feet excepting goalkeeper. The word soccer is extracted from Association Football or a slang derivative of same. Again as a later football to differ from the earlier Rugby football. Footie wasnt played in this country much except by colonials but the Mexican population in this country brought in the most. But football had long since been the province of american pigskin small rugby like, an ovalshaped ball and called a football. Kickoffs, extra points, field goals, punts, onside kicks offside kicks are kicked. running with ball and throwing and catching are hands. When Assoc. football started in colleges here and later high schools and finally pro it was called soccer. One coudnt use football and 90% of Yanks would think it was american football. By the way there are other areas of the world where it is known as Soccere or soccer fotball not just US. The second question of World Series was named for the " World of Baseball." The Baseball world series of Champions of the US, between the American and National leagues. This was later abbreviated to World Series. Hope this answers your questions. Now if you were just winding up Report then you wont read this but perhaps others might. p.s australia. canada , parts , of Ireland that have their own fotball call it soccer. pps. Rugby football was abbreviated to Rugger and Association Football to soccer and is used in UK also. Rugby football was originally with feet at Rugby school but one player picked up the ball and went over the touchline. He asked was it a goal but told well it was a good try. So they started to pick up the ball.

Soccer is only used in this country by Soccer AM and they regularly apologise for it. Note the "s" in apologise.

londonranger, football has been around for approx 150 years in it's present format. Yes. American football was originally called gridiron football which was modelled after Rugby football. However why they insist on calling a sport played mainly with the hands football is beyond me. I know they have various situations where they kick the ball. but it is only a very low percentage of the time. It's almost like us calling football handball because the keeper uses his hands and hands are used to take throw ins. It makes no sense.
The point is that Americans seems to have taken the name football for themselves for a sport that came long after the other footballing sports and are intent on wiping the name football from our main sport.
The sports main bodies around the world, UEFA, FIFA, FA, AFC, CAF all have football in their title. Even CONCACAF which is the governing body covering North America has football in its title. Soccer is a slang word for football and not the name of the sport. It's real name is football. The main competitions also have football in it's title. FA Cup, World cup, African nations Cup.
As I said I don't care what they call their sport. If they want to call it football fair enough. I care what they call our sport and when some idiot tries to tell me that it's called soccer or that the real football is what they play, it's not on. Are the americans so ignorant that they cannot refer to our sport by its proper name of Association football or even english or european football. To deny the name altogether is unacceptable.

I'll get to work on the US calling football "soccer" AFTER you get QPR to call itself by its proper name: Queen's Park Rangers?

But the owning body can call itself whatever it wasnts. If the organisation that is Queens Park Rangers wants to call itself QPR then that's just cool and dandy. However if Tottenham came along and said that they wanted to call themselves Tottenham Hotspurs Queens Park Rangers and that we should then be only referred to as QPR. Then that is wrong.
So report spread the word brother spread the word

So what would you like America to call its Football

Anyway I probably shouldnt have answered this since it doesnt pertain to Queens Park Rangers. Or does it. Any time you say F.A. cup 3rd round you are saying soccer. It is an abbreviation of Association and WAS FIRST USED IN ENGLAND. also centuries back people couldnt afford shoes and played in their socks. Hence socker. also sure you read plenty of magazines with soccer in title. World soccer is not world football. You are fighting a losing battle, americans will never call footie football unless they are English.

I don't care what they call their sport. As I have said before. It's their refusal to acknowledge that our sport is called football.
"Any time you say F.A. cup 3rd round you are saying soccer" No I'm not. That statement couldn't be more incorrect. I'm saying football. FA is an abbreviation of Football Association. Not soccer. If anything, when you say soccer you are saying football association . Because that's the source of the word soccer.
I also don't read magazines with the soccer in the title. World soccer and the refusal to call our sport football exists only in the minds of the stupid and the ignorant.

Good Lord you just wont stop. There are somethings in life you just have to live with my friend. Why it seems so bothersome to you is more of a puzzle. More Americans are playing "the beautiful game of two halves than ever before. Many have come over to UK and played very well. Their national team has also . They wanna call it Soccer so go arrest them. They want to call their Football football who in gods name gives a toot. Rant on MacDuff, but I have sureley had enough.

Ok the next concern. Why is a boxing ring called a ring. It's not ring shaped it's square. What's that about.

Ok the next concern. Why is a boxing ring called a ring. It's not ring shaped it's square. What's that about. Good point Supercat. EDIT From wiki Ring? The name ring is an atavism from when contests were fought in a roughly drawn circle on the ground. The name ring continued with the Jack Broughton rules in 1743, which specifed a small circle in the centre of the fight area where the boxers met at the start of each round. The first square ring was introduced by the Pugilistic Society in 1838. That ring was specified as 24 feet (7.3 m) square and bound by two ropes. For these and other reasons, the boxing ring is commonly humorously referred to as the "square circle."

How about, we ask all posters to use English UK language? Contentious? I also note, in Report's link, he hasn't used the apostrophe.

It's been a while since I wrote that. But probably I did it because there are so many neophyte QPR fans out there, that they wouldn't even know that Queen's Park Rangers should be spelt like that.

When did we lose our apostrophe? Was it sold off in the asset stripping years with our training ground or was it mislaid?

Well I am NOT blaming Paladini, Briatore, Nico WATRB's Pete for this one! I think it was about 1968 that the programme - or as we in America like to spell it, the "program" took away the apostraphe. But some of the stat books still include it. On the other hand, the QPR Official Site (strangely skewed) history of QPR doesn't have the apostraphe even for "Queens Park Rangers" early days.

It is a mediaeval manoeouvre to ask evey honourable poster to do it in english english. It would cause excessive quarrelling especially when travelling.
