The Scottish Football Association was formed. There were eight original members: Clydesdale, Dumbreck, Eastern, Granville, Queens Park, Rovers, Third Lanark and Vale of Leven. Professionalism was not adopted until May 1893, eight years after the F.A. had done so, and two years after the formation of the Scottish League.

Sheffield Wednesday and Aston Villa (Division One) met in the shortest Football League match in the history of the game: ten and a half minutes. Bad light had caused their original match the previous November to be abandoned and the League ordered Villa, at their expense, to play the remaining time with the result counting in the Championship.

Ted Ditchburn broke a rib during his 247th consecutive appearance in goal for Tottenham Hotspur and thus ended a record-breaking run. Joined Spurs just before the Second War and made his name during hostilities being selected for England in 1944. Was in Tottenham's consecutive Second and First Division Championship sides in 1949-1951 and played six times for England between 1949 and 1957. He left the first class game in 1959 to play for, and then manage, Romford in the Southern League after 418 Football League appearances.

There was trouble in the Manchester derby when Lou Macari and Mike Doyle both refused to leave the field after being sent off. Referee Clive Thomas took both sides off the pitch and, after seven minutes, the game re-started with ten men on each side.
