STAT ATTACK – ATTENDANCES

In this week's Stat Attack, we take an in depth look at the highest, lowest and average attendances in The Football League so far this season.

Coca-Cola Championship

There is no surprise that the Coca-Cola Championship's highest average attendance comes from one of the top sides in the league table.

Newcastle United's average gate at St James' Park this season has totalled 42,509 with their top attendance coming in December as 49,644 witnessed Marlon Harewood and Shola Ameobi grab the goals to see off North East rivals Middlesbrough.

The Championship's lowest average attendance comes from Sc*n*horpe United's Glanford Park with a total of 6,489 fans. The highest total for the Iron's came in a 2-1 win over Newcastle earlier in the season and the lowest figure so far was in the game against Coventry City in December when 5,013 turned up to watch a 1-0 win over the Sky Blues.

Coca-Cola League 1

Leeds United have the highest average attendance in Coca-Cola League 1 at 24,970 just 422 more than the second highest average which comes from leaders Norwich City.

The highest attendance of the season came in October, as 31,838 supporters packed into Elland Road to watch the 0-0 draw between Leeds and Charlton Athletic.

The lowest average figure at this level is 3,457 which has been accumulated at Victoria Park, the home of Hartlepool United. The same venue hosted the lowest match gate of the season so far with 2,465 witnessing the Monkey Hangers draw 1-1 with Gillingham.

Coca-Cola League 2

Bradford City's game against Bury last month attracted the most supporters to a game in Coca-Cola League 2 this season with 11,965 fans turning up to see their side lose 1-0 to the Shakers.

The Coral Windows Stadium has the the highest League 2 average attendance with a substantial following of 11,424.

The Darlington Arena has the lowest average attendance in League 2 with a total of 1,895 coming to watch the Quakers. The lowest attendance of the Football League came at Moss Rose with just 1,035 turning up to watch Macclesfield Town take on Northampton in January.

We ARE a small Club.

It speaks volumes that Leeds attracted 35,000 to Loftus Road in the last game of a season when THEY were top of the League, but a couple of years later, we could only manage 31,000 when we played Leeds in the final match again, when WE were top, and when we still had high hopes of winning it).

Even more striking is the current average of our nemesis in 1976, Norwich City, whose average home attendance in the THIRD tier nowadays is higher than our glorious side of the mid-seventies managed in the FIRST tier.

Times have changed, but my impression is that we consistently draw smaller crowds - mutatis mutandis - than the likes of Norwich and Palace.

Something I bear in mind for the prolonged Champions League campaigns we can expect under Colin.

The average for our promotion year was our 2nd highest gate of the decade, while I remember that our 16k average season back in Div 2 was our highest gate for 25 years.

We have lost 3k fans (I actually thought it was more to be honest) in 5 seasons - a drop of some 18% which is huge - while more fans watched us play against the likes of Stockport & Colchester in the 3rd div (none of this fancy league names from me) than they do now.

That is one of the biggest sins, amongst all of them, that Braitore & Paladini has committed at QPR. They have allowed fans to walk away and have done damn all to bring them back - in fact they have done the complete opposite.

The ticket prices are a joke (even I know that) and I doubt it can compensate for those lost 3k - not when you add in lost revenue such as drop in merchandising, programmes sold & merchandising. Worst of all we have probably lost more than 3k of our future fan base - as they have moved to supporting other teams or left football for good.

So well done Flab and Paladini - we are proud of you. 3 k fans lost in just 5 seasons. Boy you 2 really take the cake - and some people still think that you "saved" us.

Message to the Mittals - if nothing else get those prices down to realistic levels, treat the fans with respect & honesty and learn what marketing means.

Having cleverly removed long term season ticket holders from the rather desirable central seats in the South Africa Road stand - robbing them of any incentive to pay the increased ticket prices just to secure those nice seats - they also warned off any who were inclined to hang on to whatever seats they had for such time as we did reach the Premiership.

Inducing them to ask themselves whether directors who increased prices not because the Club had gone up, but when it had almost gone DOWN, were (a) right in the head, and (b) likely to charge affordable prices if we did go up.

Given their talent for combining losses on the pitch with ever increasing losses off it, and, if they really are modelling themselves on Fulham, as Paladini once said they were, then Fayed's fairly stupendous £15 million a season deficit for the last 10 years will presumably be modest by comparison with QPR's, given that we dropped no less than £18 million last season in yet another finish at the relegation end of the table.

But perhaps their interest isn't in QPR as such, but the price they might sell their shares for. At United, the outgoing shareholders sold up at a vast profit for a sum which dumped a half a billion loss on the previously debt-free Club.

Maybe they think they borrow enough to improve performances on the pitch and sell out, so they won't be around when the Club is left to struggle with whatever it costs to get the price they want.

In the way Gold and Sullivan sold out for £81 million at Birmingham, claiming there was no debt although the accounts now show the Club went £20 million in the red to buy itself back into the Premiership. Yet Birmingham's record under G & S is no better than in any other 15-year in its history.

And aren't these two 'entrepreneurs' now proposing to sell Upton Park? Man City have no assets now, neither will West Ham. Chelsea don't own Stamford Bridge. Leeds lost ownership of Elland Road, Burnley Turf Moor, Palace the huge Selhurst site, Wimbledon Plough Lane (and eventually their old identity).

Are we naive in assuming that investors treat Clubs even as businesses? If they did, presumably the Clubs would make operating profits that exceeded their debts, like other businesses.

Yet we continue to talk about them as if they are benefactors, well-disposed, rather than predatory.

Doesn't the evidence suggest that the Clubs are merely resources to them. Like mines or sandpits or quarries. To be emptied, and then abandoned.

So that once the value of the Club's assets, the money in the supporters' pockets, and any future earnings lenders might recognise and which they can borrow against are finally exhausted, they'll head for the hills.

I find it difficult to think of a single example of investors who have stayed around to see that the losses they recorded were repaid in full, and the Club's finances and assets restored.

What doesn't help our crowds is our terrible ground.

And don't ffs give me all this 'great atmosphere' and 'close to the pitch' boswollox.

My old man has a few health issues these days, and doesn't go as often because of the difficulties getting in and out. In a crowd of 12,000.

I and a few of the people i go with are over 5'10''. We get get cramp and it's unpleasant sitting there.

Love it when they have those 'practice' evacuations. If anyone was desperate enough to want to blow the place up, they'd get everyone.


Dunno what the 'official' capacity is, but the 'comfortable' capacity is about 13,000.

And, before anyone goes off on one, I'm actually quite happy to stay at LR. But if you're one of the dreamers that think we can sustain top flight football and Champions League (hahahahaha), then staying at Loftus Road is clearly crackers.

Be comfortable in your own skin, and enjoy annoying the cluck out of clubs like Sheffield United who get bigger crowds in bigger grounds and for large parts were made to look 2nd best by a wondeful little club from west London.

Good points.

The Ground is part of a more general problem, I think. Once, football clubs understood that you only knew after the event what you were capable of achieving. Once you've achieved it, in other words.

But now, we have to pay in advance. The Club does, and we do. Because they bump up the ticket prices BEFORE they've achieved anything.

Clubs say they want a bigger stadium to accommodate the bigger crowds, they spend money they haven't got, getting it from moneylenders they can't trust, in order to win trophies they haven't won, and probably never will, under managers who won't be there long enough to make a difference.

Maybe we should we build a 60,000 capacity stadium, to compete with Arsenal?

Or follow Arsenal's rather bizarre thinking, and build one 50,000 smaller than our 'rival', on the basis that the Gunners think a 60,000 capacity ground will enable them to compete with European Clubs with grounds which are almost double that in size.

In at least one case, the difference is greater than between 'the Emirates' and Loftus Road.

Or have we stumbled on the real reason for the spending and building? Merely to spend and build.

The more the Club spends, the more money in everyone else's pockets. The Club doesn't need to get anything out of it. The Board can just go on and on telling us to hope for the best.
