Chelsea signed inside-forward George Gibson from Bolton Wanderers. He was a strong and clever player but had a suspect temperament which perhaps hindered his chances at international level. Nonetheless he gave fine service to Hamilton Academicals (1925-27), Bolton (where he won a Cup winners medal in 1929) and Chelsea until the Second War. In an effort to stop the Pools Companies using the Football League's published fixture list it was replaced by "mystery" matches. February 29 - Boro End 128 Year Silver Drought
2009
Middlesbrough ended a 128-year wait for their first major trophy when they beat Bolton Wanderers 2-1 to lift the League Cup (Carling Cup) at the Millennium Stadium on this day in soccer history in 2004.
Boro got off to a dream start when Joseph-Désiré Job scored the fastest goal to that point in Cup history with his second minute strike and then Boudewijn Zenden doubled the advantage with his controversial penalty in the 7th minute.
Bolton, who knocked out holders Liverpool, has not won a trophy since the 1958 FA Cup. Middlesbrough defeated Brighton & Hove Albion, Wigan Athletic, Everton, Tottenham, and Arsenal on the way to the championship.
