Mr Newell's claim against Grimsby Town Football Club.
It has never been the club's policy to discuss internal issues through the media and we regret that the proper legal process has been overtaken by this public debate.
Naturally the club will be defending its position and a defence will be lodged with the courts today 25-2-2010. Additional information dealing with some of Mr Newell's Claim will be dealt with in due course.
The club is a family friendly organisation, which engenders good relationships top to bottom.
In fact good relationships were apparent throughout Mr Newell's tenure and particularly in his parting statements on local radio and in news media, which were said in a very positive way. He made these statements knowing that he had been dismissed due to irretrievable breakdown and events during the evening after the Rochdale game.
It is disappointing that a differing assertion has now been made to justify Mr Newell's claim and actions on the evening after the Rochdale game.
Ryan Bennett was not discussed at all that evening nor had it been a controversial issue at any time. The club have previously made public the details around Ryan Bennett's departure.
Mr Newell admits in his claim a number of things which simply are issues of gross misconduct in themselves, swearing at a director etc, but it seeks to mitigate those actions as being acceptable because they were common place. The club believes the High Court will see through this ridiculous accusation.
The chairman denies robustly that he acted aggressively, or was affected by drink.
The decision to dismiss Mr Newell for gross misconduct was ratified at a board meeting on 3 November 2009, when all four directors formally recorded their agreement to dismiss him for gross misconduct.
There will be no further comment.
