Former skipper dies, aged 49
12:30pm Tuesday 30th December 2008
THE funeral will take place on Friday of Ray Deakin, the former Wanderers defender and captain, who died on Christmas Eve after losing his fight against Cancer.
Deakin, who made 121 appearances in his three seasons at Burnden Park, was 49. He leaves a wife, Penny, and son, Adam.
Born in Liverpool he won England Schoolboy honours and came through the ranks at Everton, where he was an apprentice. He failed to break into the first team at Goodison Park and eventually moved to Port Vale where he spent one season before joining Wanderers on a free transfer in July 1982.
Although he played most of his games at his preferred left-back position, he also played at centre-back, and had a spell as captain in John McGovern’s team.
He moved to Burnley on a free transfer in May 1985 and became a firm favourite at Turf Moor where he made 247 appearances in six years.
Respected by teammates and opponents alike, his leadership qualities came to the fore in May 1987 when he played a true captain’s role as the Clarets beat Orient 2-1 at Turf Moor to avoid becoming the first Football League team to be automatically relegated from Division Four.
A year later he had the distinction of captaining Burnley at Wembley, where they lost 2-0 to Wolves in the Sherpa Van Trophy final.
He was plagued by injuries in the 1988-89 season and, although he fought his way back into first team reckoning, he quit the game in 1991 after losing his first team slot and in recent years lived in Selby, North Yorkshire.
Burnley fans paid tribute to the former captain by staging a minute’s applause before the Barnsley game on Boxing Day when players wore black armbands in memory of a man who is remembered fondly for his service to the Turf Moor club.
Burnley FC chairman Barry Kilby said: “Ray was very much part of the family here at Turf Moor and as a former club captain he has a very special place in the hearts of all those who remember him as a great servant.”
Ray Deakin’s funeral will be held at York Crematorium, Bishopthorpe Road, York, on Friday at 3pm.
