Ireland beat England 3-0 at Middlesbrough in the International Championship with two goals from Lacey and one from Gillespie. This was Ireland's first win on English soil since the series began in 1882 and it was to be 43 years before they were able to repeat the achievement. In the same season, 1913-14 they beat Wales 2-0 and drew with Scotland 0-0 to eneable them to win the competition outright for the only time to date. England: S. Hardy (Aston Villa), R. Tottenham Hotspur paid �35,000 for Swansea Town's Welsh international winger Cliff Jones. He made his League debut for the "Swans" in 1953 and played 168 League matches scoring 46 goals as well as being capped for the first time in 1956. After his transfer he was a member of the Spurs side which won the League and Cup double in 1960-61, the Cup again the following season and the European Cup Winners Cup in 1962-63.

Stewart Imlach, former Scottish international winger, transferred to Crystal Palace from Chelmsford City for �1,000. Palace had previously allowed him to go in the opposite direction on a free transfer when it was thought his career was over. From 1952 he played for Bury, Derby County, Nottingham Forest (Cup Winners medal 1959) and Coventry City before going to Selhurst Park for the first time.

Terry Hennessey, Nottingham Forest's Welsh international half, received a seven day suspension for remarks made to the referee during his club's match with Newcastle United at the end of the previous January. This was the first instance of a first team player from Forest being suspended since the end of the Second War and the club was still the only Football League side not to have had a player sent off in post-war League matches.

Legendary former Liverpool manager Bob Paisley OBE dies at the age of 77. He began as a player at Bishop Auckland in 1938 and won an FA Amateur Cup winners medal in 1939. He signed for Liverpool just before the outbreak of war so losing a large part of his playing career. He won a League Championship medal in 1946-47 but was left out of the FA Cup Final team in 1950. He retired from playing in 1954 after 278 League and Cup games in which he scored 13 goals.
He joined the famous bootroom and became trainer in 1957 and Bill Shankly's assistant before becoming manager in July 1974 after Shankley retired. He signed Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness both later managers of the club. He proved to be the most successful manager in the Clubs history winning the League Championship in 1976, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1982 and 1983, FA Cup runners up 1977, League Cup Winners 1981,1982 and 1983 Runners up 1978, European Cup Winners 1977, 1978 and 1981, and finally UEFA Cup winners

He decided to retire in 1983 but remained at the club as an advisor and served on the Board of Directors. He retired from Liverpool in 1992 due to ill health.
