October 2003 - QPR Official Site
Peterborough vs QPR 0 - 0 Date: 18/10/2003 Venue: London Road (PET) Attendance: 7,247 It ended goalless at London Road after Rangers failed to break down 10-man Peterborough followng Sagi Burton's first half red card.
Posh kept the visitors at bay without too many alarms in the second period and Ian Holloway will be disappointed that his players could not make the most of the numerical advantage.
A deflected Gino Padula free kick hit the post in the second half, but otherwise, both goalkeepers enjoyed a relatively alarm-free afternoon.
The game started at a frantic pace and early on Rangers lost the ball deep on the right flank for Peterborough to break down the same wing. However, Adam Newton broke the last line of the Rangers defence a fraction too early, and the assistant referee was quick to raise his flag.
Rangers' first effort of the game came from a neat Kevin McLeod move. He turned his defender inside-out, then sent in a teasing cross - which the out-stretched leg of Paul Furlong fired over the cross bar.
In the fifth minute it was McLeod who again provide the penetration from the wing. He sent in his ball low for Kevin Gallen to control, pushing it square for Furlong to control before having his strike tipped over the cross-bar by Mark Tyler in the Posh goal from close range.
On 10 minutes Martin Rowlands sent in a delightful free-kick from wide on the left. The ball floated through to Warren Barton at the far post, but the right-could only find the side netting.
Moments later Gallen bore down on goal, but Tyler's save was top class, at full stretch to parry away the Rangers hit-man's goal-bound strike.
Peterborough should have punished Rangers as they broke on the left of midfield in the 22nd minute. Rangers had been reduced to Barton and Terrell Forbes in defence, as Gino Padula and Steve Palmer had been caught out of position.
The Posh midfield pushed through and David Farrell had an option of four blue shirts in the box. But Palmer did well to make up the yards, and his timely interception saw away the danger.
Leon McKenzie had the best chance of the opening half hour. The Posh striker chested down the ball from a free-kick deep in defence. He turned on the spot and fired his strike just shy of Chris Day's left upright.
Then a string of cautions changed the flow of the game. Peterborough's Sagi Burton was cautioned for an ill-timed tackle on Furlong and Terrell Forbes went in to the book for a similar offence on Farrell.
But it was Burton's kick-out at Marc Bircham in the 28th minute that almost saw tempers boil over, and earned Burton a straight red card, despite having been cautioned only minutes earlier.
Matthew Gill brought the best out of Day in the 32nd minute. His free-kick from 25 yards beat the wall but not the out-stretched arms of the Rangers shot-stopper.
Peterborough had the last chance of the half. Farrell broke through the midfield as Rangers scampered back to defend. As he lined up to fire, Rowlands leg broke his stride, and from the resulting corner Day tipped over the bar.
Rangers started brightly in the second half, with Furlong rising high in the box, trying to beat the outstretched arms of the Posh shot-stopper in the opening minute. But the two collided heavily, with Tyler retaining possession.
Then McLeod broke with pace in the 48th minute. He flew down the left flank beating off attempts by first half substitute Christopher Kanu to dispossess him, keeping his feet - sending in a powerful ball, which needed a bit more bend if it was to beat Tyler in the Posh goal.
Barry Fry again reshuffled the Peterborough pack on 49 minutes. Curtis Woodhouse made way for Gareth Jellyman, as Tony Thorpe replaced Furlong in the Rangers attack. On 51 minutes Rowlands worked the ball into the penalty area from the right. Keeping the ball at his feet he drew two defenders, and then he teased a cross which found the head of Bircham who fired wide under a strong defensive challenge.
Peterborough then started to work themselves back into the game. On the 55th minute McKenzie sent in a decent cross, which Farrell could not convert.
With the game in its 66th minute, Rangers won only their second corner of the match. The ball was sent deep to Gallen at the far post, who beat off his defender, sending the ball back into the mix. Palmer collected, but was shut down as he tried to get a shot on goal.
The Posh were certainly making a game of it, despite being reduced to 10 men. Newton was put through on goal with Padula fighting to make up ground. But the Argentinian had done enough to close down the striker's sight of goal, and his weak shot moments later was held by Day in the Rangers goal.
A minute later Rangers won a free-kick 30 yard from goal on the right flank. With Padula standing over the ball Ian Holloway rang the changes from the sidelines. A good two minutes past as the fourth official struggled to master the substitutions board.
Gareth Ainsworth replaced, Rowlands and Eric Sabin came on for McLeod, but it was Padula's free-kick which brought the 2,753 travelling Rangers support to their feet. The searching free-kick come back off the inside of the far upright, and fell dangerously in to the centre of the box, before it was beaten away by the Posh defence.
Three minutes later Marcus Bean found himself in the referee's book, earning a caution for a tackle from behind. On 78 minutes Newton made way for Calum Willock in the Posh attack, as the home side looked to take more than a point from the battle.
With the game entering its final 10 minutes, Peterborough came close to taking the lead. A goal mouth scramble initiated by a poor clearance, saw Day beat the ball off the goal line with his feet.
A minute later it was Palmer who found himself cautioned as substitute Willock made a meal of a decent defensive tackle.
With three minutes of injury time added, neither team could break through, and both teams were to leave a point to the good, but Rangers will be disappointed they couldn't capitalise on their numerical advantage.

Interesting to see how many of that team this year no longer in our starting eleven or have gone off somewhere. by the way, what does Borrowdale do for a living these days, someone said they saw him down the Lane.

"Blue and White Army" ? Peterborough Official Site
Support Gannon's Blue And White Army Thu 04 Feb 2010 Peterborough United entertain Queens Park Rangers at London Road on Saturday (3pm) in what will be Jim Gannon's first game in charge. Gannon has already indicated he will be hoping to bring the 'enjoyment factor' back to the football and the players are excited by the challenge. Striker Craig Mackail-Smith said: 'When you are not winning matches, the morale does take a knock, but the new gaffer has come in and has been very thorough with his approach. 'He has said that he wants us to play with smiles on our faces and to play attacking, passing football and as players we are looking forward to that.' Manager Gannon believes the supporters have an important role to play. 'I am sure the supporters have been a bit down because of the results, but I am sure they will come down and see a good game of football. 'I like my teams to play attractive football and Queens Park Rangers are the same. They have some good attacking players in their side and they are better than their recent results suggest,' Gannon said. Remember, there are tickets available for Saturday's game. You can purchase tickets from the London Road Box Office and online at www.theposhtickets.com (for collection). It costs just £5 for under 16s to watch the action from the Norwich and Peterborough Family Stand. www.theposh.com/page/NewsDetail/0,,10427~1955343,00.html

The pace and tempo of the Posh side was too much for the Londoners who were among the League One promotion favourites. Steve Palmer did scramADVERTISEMENTble the visitors in front in just four minutes, but Posh proceeded to dominate the contest in front of just under 7,500 fans. Dave Farrell equalised with a stunning shot from the edge of the penalty area six minutes before the break and two more goals followed either side of half-time. Neale Fenn kneed Posh ahead from a Tom Williams cross, Leon McKenzie made it 3-1 from a Farrell cross and five minutes before full-time Fenn scored his second goal direct from a free-kick with the help of a generous deflection and following the dismissal of QPR's giant defender Daniel Shittu. Midfielder Richard Forsyth won the man-of-the-match award, closely followed by Jimmy Bullard. It all had Evening Telegraph reporter Alan Swann drooling. He said: "Posh have officially gatecrashed the promotion party following a performance of brilliant fluency." He was soon proved wrong. Posh were fifth after this win, but failed to win any of their next eight matches and finished the season in 18th place. QPR finished eighth. Posh: Tyler, Joseph, Jelleyman, Edwards, Rea, Forsyth, Williams, Bullard, Farrell, Fenn, McKenzie. Subs Shields, Oldfield, Danielsson, Connor, French. QPR: Day, Rose, Bruce, Palmer, Shittu, Bignot, Pacquette, Burgess, Bonnot, M'Bombo, Connolly. Subs: Griffiths, Thomson, Warren, Digby, McEwan. And the Official Site THE FRIDAY PREVIEW: POSH Posted on: Fri 05 Feb 2010 The R's kick-off what is a busy February on Saturday when they travel to London Road to face Peterborough United in the Coca Cola Championship. Rangers make the trip to Cambridgeshire looking for three points to revitalise their campaign, while Jim Gannon takes charge of his first game at the Club after he was appointed boss on Tuesday following the dismissal of Mark Cooper. Gannon is the third man to occupy the Posh hotseat this season, while struggling Peterborough sit some 11 points from survival. Honours ended even in a 1-1 draw the last time Rangers and the Posh met at Loftus Road, with Wayne Routledge equalising for QPR following Aaron McLean's opening goal of the game. Team News New signings Tamas Priskin and Marcus Bent look set to play at least some at London Road following respective loan moves from Ipswich Town and Birmingham City. Mick Harford has no fresh injury worries for the trip to Peterborough, with Martin Rowlands and Gavin Mahon (both knee) the only two absentees for the R's. Meanwhile, Lee Cook is pushing for a place in the starting eleven following his 15-minute substitute appearance for Rangers at home to Sc**thorpe United last weekend. Newly-appointed Peterborough boss Jim Gannon isn't expected to make too many changes to the Posh side for the visit of QPR. Scott Griffiths and Tommy Williams will fight it out for a place at left-back, while Craig Mackail-Smith looks set to continue to head the Peterborough attack as a lone striker. Star Man George BOYD - Striker George Boyd joined Peterborough United in January 2007. He began his career at Stevenage Borough, making no fewer than 123 appearances and scoring 28 goals for the Blue Square Premier side. A number of eye-catching performances was enough to convince Peterborough United into bidding a Conference record transfer fee of over £250,000 to lure 'The White Pele' to London Road, and Boyd has certainly justified his price tag with some stunning displays for Posh. On May 6th 2009, Boyd made his international debut for Scotland B after receiving a call-up to the squad following proof that his Grandfather was born north of the border. Despite representing England C team earlier in his career, the 23-year-old was eligible to play and he marked his debut with a goal during Scotland's 3-0 win over Northern Ireland B. This season, Boyd has made a total of 33 appearances in all competitions, scoring 12 goals for the Posh. Classic Encounter Peterborough United 0, QPR 2 Nationwide Division Two - Wednesday 1st January 2003 Goals either side of half time from Clarke Carlisle and Richard Langley saw Rangers begin the New Year in style at London Road. Despite what were difficult conditions, the R's took the lead just before half time, as Carlisle rose highest in the 44th minute to nod home a Langley corner. And Rangers added number two with just 11 minutes remaining. Langley turned from provider to scorer, with his delicious corner evading everyone - including Lee Harrison in the Peterborough goal - to hit the back of the net and give QPR the points.
