Manchester City missed three penalties during their First Division match against Newcastle United. Full-back Eli Fletcher missed two and inside-forward Ike Thornley the other.

27 January 1923

Everton signed Scottish international centre-half Neil McBain from Manchester United. He was discovered during the First War playing for both Portsmouth and Southampton in the wartime leagues and was signed by Ayr United before moving to Manchester in 1920. After his spell at Goodison he joined Watford as a player (until 1932) and then as manager. He played in over 350 matches and in three internationals. When he was manager at New Brighton after the Second War he was short of a goalkeeper for the Third Division match with Hartlepool United so he played himself at the age of 52 years and 4 months; the oldest ever League appearance. After a further period managing Watford and various scouting and coaching jobs he became manager of Ayr United in 1963 at the age of 69.



27 January 1934

Jim Fleming, Rangers centre-forward, scored five of his side's six against Dundee in the Scottish League. The previous week he had scored nine in a Scottish Cup match.


27 January 1938

Death of Jack Sharp at the age of 60. An Everton winger and Lancashire batsman he was one of the very few players ever to appear for England at both football and cricket. He began his career with Aston Villa and played for Everton in the F.A. Cup Finals of 1906 and 1907.


27 January 1949

Newcastle United paid £22,000 for George and Ted Robledo from Barnsley. Born in Chile they came to Yorkshire at an early age and joined Barnsley during the Second War. George, an inside-forward and prolific goalscorer, soon became a regular in the first team and had played in over 100 matches prior to the transfer whereas Ted had only played in five. Whilst at Newcastle George won two F.A. Cup winners medals in 1951 and 1952 and was the First Division's leading scorer in the 1951-52 season with 33. He was Chile's centre-forward in the 1950 World Cup and played against England in their first ever World Cup tie. Ted was a half-back and only established himself in the 1951-52 season when he appeared in 32 League games and the Cup Final. When their contracts expired in the summer of 1953 they went home to Chile where George became national coach. In their respective Football League careers George played 260 times scoring 128 goals while Ted played just 42 matches.

The F.A. Council rejected a proposal that the F.A. should run its own football pools.

27 January 1966

Ned Liddell announced his retirement from football at the age of 87 and after more than 60 years in the game. He played for Southampton, Clapton Orient, Southend and Arsenal, managed Southend, Queens Park Rangers and Fulham, and was appointed a Tottenham Hotspur scout in 1953 when he was 74. He died in 1969.

EXCLUSIVE: SHITTU RETURNS

R's fan's favourite Dan Shittu has returned to the Club on a short term contract.

The big defender - who made 182 appearances for the R's during a five year spell at Loftus Road between 2001 and 2006 - has put pen to paper on a deal that runs until the end of the 2010/11 season.

Shittu's 93 day contract at Millwall reached a conclusion earlier this week and R's boss Neil Warnock is looking forward to welcoming the Nigerian international in to his table-topping squad for the all-important run-in.

He told http://www.qpr.co.uk: "I just felt that with the injuries Fitz has had this season that we were maybe one body light in the central defensive area.

"We've got to look at every avenue for the last 19 games of what could be the most important period in the Clubs recent history.

"Dan wanted to come here and I wanted to get him, so it was a no brainer in that respect."

Warnock added: "Dan knows the Club inside-out and can't wait to get started.

"I've not signed him just because he's a Club legend, I've brought him in because I feel he's very capable of doing a job for us.

"I'm ever so grateful to the Board for backing me again, as they have done throughout the transfer window."

Shittu - who featured in the 2010 World Cup last summer for his native Nigeria - expressed his delight at returning to Loftus Road, commenting: "I'm excited and emotional to be back here.

"Everyone knows this is my home. I've got a lot of friends here and the fans know how I feel about them.

"I've been through a lot of highs and lows at QPR, but the place is buzzing at the moment and I can't wait to pull on the Rangers shirt again and give my all."

Shittu - who could be in line to make his QPR bow at Hull City on Saturday - will wear the number 41 shirt.

QPR have set their sights on striker Rob Hulse.

The Derby County hitman also interests Middlesbrough, who ironically lost out in the chase for Wayne Routledge after the Rs winger joined Newcastle instead on Tuesday.

But flush with the £2million they made on the Routledge deal, Hoops are prepared to pay Derby a loan transfer fee as well as take on the 30-year-old’s £6k-a-week wages.

Hulse has made 18 appearances for the Rams this season, but is far from Nigel Clough’s number one choice with the County manager preferring both Chris Porter and Steve Davies.

Age is also a factor in Clough’s preference, but 30-year-old Hulse has the credentials to play as lone front man or alongside Jay Simpson in a revamped attack shorn of Patrick Agyemang, now on loan at Bristol City for the rest of the season.

QPR have made a bid to sign Hungarian hitman Tamas Priskin from Ipswich after offloading Patrick Agyemang to Bristol City.

Priskin has failed to impress since a big-money move to Portman Road from Watford in the summer and has lost his place in Ipswich's first team.

But Rangers are interested in taking the 23-year-old target man - an international team-mate of Rs playmaker Akos Buzsaky - on loan with a view to a permanent move.

They have enquired about a number of other forwards, including Stoke's Dave Kitson, but are now preparing to make a formal offer for the Town striker.

Priskin scored 19 goals in 82 appearances during his three-year spell with the Hornets, which included a brief loan with Preston in 2008, before his move to Ipswich.

Rangers have cleared the decks for his arrival by allowing Agyemang to move to Ashton Gate on loan until the end of the season, with an agreed price of around £450,000 for his permanent transfer if he impresses.

The 29-year-old striker hit a purple patch of scoring form soon after his £350,000 arrival from Preston two years ago, but had been in and out of the side under Rangers' recent procession of managers.

Also leaving Loftus Road was winger Wayne Routledge, who joined Championship front-runners Newcastle in a £1.25m deal after they beat neighbours Middlesbrough to his signature.

Rangers turned down an initial bid for Routledge from Gordon Strachan's side, but had been anxious to trim their wage bill by selling the former Crystal Palace and Tottenham player.

There has also been speculation over the future of Rowan Vine, but new QPR boss Mick Harford confirmed that the forward remains very much part of his plans.

Vine recently underwent a hernia operation, but featured in last week's friendly against Luton and Harford told the Times: "He'll probably have a reserve game or two, but he's not in my plans to go out on loan.

"I was instrumental in bringing Rowan to the club when I was here last time and everyone knows what he's about. He's industrious, infectious and good to have around the place.

"Unfortunately he had that horrific injury, which obviously set him back a bit and he's just had a little operation, but he's training well and looks fit.

"If we can get Rowan Vine back to what he was, we've got a good player on our hands.

"You've got to be careful with players who have been out long-term, with secondary injuries, not fatigue them and make sure they're fresh and ready to go into the first team."

However, there could be further departures from QPR before the transfer window closes next Monday, with central defender Fitz Hall also lined up for a loan move.

The central defender was another of the clutch of players who joined what was then viewed as a Rangers revolution two years ago, but he has lost his place in the Rs side since Jim Magilton's departure in December.

MICK Harford is convinced Nigel Quashie's QPR roots will be a key asset as the midfielder embarks on his second spell at Loftus Road.

Quashie came through the youth system at Rangers and played 63 times for the first team before the cash-strapped club sold him to Nottingham Forest for £2.5m in 1998.

And Harford, whose predecessor Paul Hart first sounded out the former Scotland international about a return to west London, told the Times: "It is a big help that he knows the club.

"He already has an affiliation with the fans, that's important and every player here knows who Nigel Quashie is and what he's about. I think he'll be a good signing for Queens Park Rangers.

"Nigel's had an injury problem, but he's been at MK Dons and played eight or nine games in the last two months, so we know he comes here fit and available to play football.

"He brings a bit of experience and knowhow with him and he's a very good footballer. He's trained with us and looked excellent and settled in very well."

Quashie, now 31, moved on to Portsmouth, Southampton, West Brom and West Ham following his two-year stint at Forest and also won 14 caps for Scotland.

He trained with QPR last week while negotiating his release from West Ham and made his second debut for Rangers in Tuesday's 5-0 hammering by former club Forest.

Another debutant was left-back Matt Hill, who signed a loan deal from Wolves until the end of the season - almost five years after turning down the chance to play for QPR.

The 28-year-old, who began his career with Bristol City, was a transfer target for former Rs manager Ian Holloway, but opted to sign for Preston instead.

Meanwhile, QPR will also try and persuade Wolves to extend goalkeeper Carl Ikeme's loan period until the end of the season.

Ikeme, who is behind Wayne Hennessey and Marcus Hahnemann in the queue for the keeper's jersey at Molineux, has impressed at Rangers since his temporary move, which ends after next week's trip to Peterborough.

"Ikeme's here to add competition and play games," said Harford. "He's looked great in training, he's got a great attitude and presence about him and we're delighted with him.

"I think when you sign players from Premier League teams, firstly they're expected to play and if they're not good enough, they won't. But Carl's proved he's more than good enough to play for Queens Park Rangers.
