YOUTHS GO OUT ON PENALTIES
RANGERS youth team lost the chance of a fourth round home tie with Derby County after going down 4-2 on penalties to Wimbledon at Sutton United's Gander Green Lane.
It was a tough way to lose the game for Warren Neill and Gary Waddock's side who played the better football and perhaps just shaded a close encounter between two well-matched sides.
The scores were tied at 1-1 after extra-time in an entertaining game which saw Rangers deservedly come from behind to force the game to a further 30 minutes of action with an excellent goal from the lively Richard Brady.
Wimbledon had their goalkeeper Lee Worgan to thank for their victory. Not only did he save two of Rangers spot-kicks from Pat Gradley and Alex Dick in the shoot-out but he also made three excellent saves in normal time to deny the visitors.
The first came after just a minute into the game when he made a marvellous point-blank stop to deny Richard Pacquette after Alistair Heselton intercepted a weak Dons back pass before squaring the ball into Pacquette's path.
Worgan was once more called into action midway through the half when Brady found himself free but the Dons stopper spread himself superbly to deny the lively striker who was very impressive throughout.
However, the Dons did begin to find their feet and finally got themselves back into the game when Ahmet Suleymanoglu drove a fierce effort just wide of Kris Robertson's right-hand post five minutes before the break.
The Dons striker did manage to find the target to give his side the lead seconds before the interval when a sweeping move was finished by the striker who curled the ball home from the edge of the area past the helpless Robertson.
Rangers came out for the second half looking to respond immediately and Brady and Pacquette both went close before the diminutive Brady finally got his just rewards with a well-taken goal.
Midfielder Ryan D'Austin did well to keep the ball in play on the right-hand touchline and his short pass found Heselton who played a ball to Brady who held off two defenders before rolling the ball past Worgan.
The goal gave Rangers the confidence to flood forward in droves and Pacquette almost grabbed the winner after being put through by the impressive Danny Murphy, who showed some very impressive touches throughout, but the powerful striker's well-struck effort hit the post with Worgan well beaten.
However it proved not to be Rangers night when Gradley missed a glorious chance from six yards out after Marcus Bean nodded Pacquette's cross to his feet, but the midfielder put the ball wide with what proved to be the last kick of normal time.
Extra time presented chances for both sides as legs began to tire but both keepers did very well to keep their sides in the game with excellent saves.
But with both defences holding out under pressure the game to penalities.
The two sides scored their first kicks but shortly after Sam Sloma converted for the Dons, Ben Walshe saw his well-struck penalty saved brilliantly saved by Worgan.
Pacquette cooly slotted home his kick to make the score 3-2 but immediately after Kurtis Townsend had made it four out of four for the Dons, the pressure got the better of the unfortunate Alex Dick as Worgan capped a fine performance by pushing the central defenders' venomous effort onto the crossbar.
The result was a disappointing one for Warren and Gary's boys, but they can take credit from their performance and their were some encouraging signs on show and in Brady, Murphy, Pacquette and full-back Marcel Nugent, four names to look out for in the future.
Team: Kris Robertson; Marcel Nugent, Danny Murphy, Alex Dick, David Whatley; Ryan D'Austin, Alistair Heselton (Marcus Bean), Patrick Gradley, Ben Walshe; Richard Pacquette, Richard Brady.

Schoolboy Daniel Wright also had a fine effort blocked on the line by a Coventry defender. And Rangers should have had a penalty when Purser appeared to be tripped in the box.
