I think Warburton’s choice of captain has been pretty questionable.
Grant Hall’s contract extension was never very likely and yet he was our skipper until lockdown. Our current policy would suggest he would not make today’s squad – although as our highest paid player that would have been either brave or stupid.
Post lockdown he opted for Barbet. He never looked skipper material to me, but he got the Warburton nod. I think I have finally lost patience with Barbet after yesterday. I think he must be dumb. The number of penalties he has conceded, his unnecessary going to ground and his daft charging in to the back of strikers with no real attempt to win the ball and thus conceding unnecessary free kicks. I finally lost patience yesterday when having already been booked and with Woolmer in charge, he continued to charge into the backs of the opposition, risking a second yellow. All three of our central defenders have been involved in dopey decisions in the last 2 matches, but for me, I think we should go forward with Masterson and Dickie now.
Then we have the next captain in Cameron. He gets the starting nod over Ball who has delivered far more through cameos than Cameron has this season. Cameron was never going to be able to play all the games at his age especially with the number of games. So it was a strange choice. Yesterday, he was the obvious choice to go off for Ball, but Warburton always gives Chair the hook. It was Chair’s best game of the season and he was tiring, but we lost our ‘out’ ball when Chair went off. I think Cameron is a useful squad member who brings valuable experience when on the pitch. But there was talk of Ball being the captain before the season started, but the decision to make Cameron the skipper meant he went from potential captain to a bench warmer. I am not saying that because Ball is the current hero, I still think we need a box to box midfielder, but I do not understand Warburton’s thinking.
Perhaps in today’s game, the captain is just name only and it really doesn’t matter, but if it impacts on team selction and substitutions then it does matter.
