Strong team put out .. looks like we’re going for it. Chance for Oteh to prove me wrong and be a backup striker

No Barbet, I wonder why, not even on the bench. Manning and Bright both start and Bright is handed the number 11 shirst. Bit of a turn around from saying they would not be picked if they did not extend. No surprise though, I think he has to. Lumley in goal and Deing misses out Oteh up front. Strong team but perhaps a few in the window? Maybe Bright, Manning, Lumley and Oteh?

2-2 with goals in quick succession. Very soft goal made it 2-1 to Plymouth with Lumley beaten at the near post. Then next attack, BOS crosses into the box after Oteh is tackled in the area, Kakay arrives late and hammers it in.

All over them at the moment. BOS and Carroll link up for a really nice one-two, shot well saved. Next attack, keeper makes a great save from Manning.
Smyth now on for Carroll.

Game made for Smyth, this one .. now we’ll win in normal time! :-) So unlucky for Smyth there. Great run, flicked forward with his heel, shot beats the keeper but hits inside of the post and trickles along the line before being cleared. Oteh (who had a shot cleared off the line, too) off for Shodipo. Ball off for Bettache.

Soon as the subs come on, defence splitting cross, Manning doesn't keep up with Nouble who volleys it first time into the net. 3-2.

Nouble follows up with a late, unnecessary slide into Shodipo's ankle. Fortunately he is OK.

Still can’t defend then. Even after buying a new CB.

Two shots on target in injury time. BOS somehow wins a tricky aerial 50/50, Shodipo free to go one on one but pass overhit. Last attempt of the game, Smyth cuts in, shoots, almost hits the corner flag.

The annual lose to lower league opposition in the first round of the cup trend continues, to no one’s amazement.
Said it before, betting against QPR in a cup match is truly the easiest money you will ever make in sports.

Oh dear not a great start to the season. Was going to say we need some firepower but more importantly we need to sort this defence out. We conceded heaps last year, hopefully a few games playing together will start to see some positives.

Not hugely surprised - or disappointed - at the result.
Forest, Swansea, Cardiff, Huddersfield all lost to lower league sides - Cardiff getting thumped 3-0 and Swansea losing 2-0 to League Two Newport.
While we might expect better finishing when Dykes and Thomas get back, the defence is still a bit of a worry. But at least this will have been a good, competitive work-out for the defence and getting used to new boy Dickie.
Lumley starting in a Caraboa Cup game hints at Kelly or Dieng getting the nod in the league opener next week.
Can't imagine MW or the Board will be too upset at this one - and may possibly even be slightly relieved.

I didn't watch the game today as it was my boys first friendly of the season however I just watch the highlights and from what little you call tell from 1 minute and 47 seconds of highlights, no one put in a decent tackle to stop any of their goals.

I don’t think we do tackling either, actually. We go forward and that’s about it. Without Eze we better learn how to track back, pick up runners and not over commit in attack, because if Plymouth can put 3 past us with ease then the rest of the Championship teams will roast us alive.

For what it's worth, I've given up trying to make too much sense of us based on league Cup games. If we took how we performed and lined up for these games against lower league opposition compared to the league over the years, there's not much correlation there. Saw both good and bad things out there today. Be waiting til the first few league games and the closure of the window before judging much.

Well I think you can always learn even from training / cup games. The trick is not to over react though. We played a strong team, but I am not sure that this year of all years we needed a fixture congestion should we have won. We were trying to win it though, pushing forward. But we set out with two very advanced full backs - both who are good going forward. But then with no Cameron available, we had two at the back when they broke away with players the wrong side of the full backs. If we are going to play wing backs then we need a Cameron type to drop back but instead we had Bright in a free role supporting Oteh who cannot play as a lone striker. Oteh was unlucky yesterday but he cannot buy a goal at the moment and could come good somewhere else, but if we sign a loan forward I expect him to depart. But Manning is not a defender and if he is to stay then I think he should play left wing, especially if Bright moves on. Manning's positional sense is not there as a defender. I will be interested to see who starts in goal next Saturday. Warburton said that Jo had nothing to do but pick the ball out of the net. I thought that he did not look the part again. He did not move even for the offside goal. But if the comment about players who do not sign extensions not being picked had any credence then perhaps Dieng is who he was talking about. We shall see next Saturday I guess. But on another day we could have won, but conceding three goals to a team that had not played in the league for 5 months is not what the doctor ordered, and for me, the set up was wrong.

Yeah, I thought Lumley should have done better with the one at the near post in particular. Seen people say that he may have been unsighted and the attacker should have been closed down earlier, both valid, but i'd be expecting a keeper to stop that one.
I'd certainly expect another striker in, it just doesn't feel like Oteh is going to make it sadly. Goes to show how big the step up can be, he was banging them in in the youth setup. If that Posh rumour is true, I'd see that as a good move for him. To quote LFW's report, he was a combo of not very good and not very lucky yesterday.
On teams figuring us out, I think it is maybe a bit of red herring, just cos it's never been a secret. We could have probably had a very good shout of picking the formation and style from the moment we heard Warbs was taking the helm. Doesn't have to be a bad thing, just have to get it right - some of the best (relative!) success stories in this league come from teams who may not have oodles of cash but have a well-drilled, defined style that everyone knows how to play. Swansea, Millwall, Preston for example - they barely deviate, it's on other teams to stop it. At our best last season, teams knew how to stop us, many tried, many failed, many succeeded, but it was enough for 13th. You can and should tweak when needed, sure. But other side is, getting players to adapt on the fly game to game and switch roles brings its own risk, too.
Huge amount of technical pressure on Amos and Carroll this year for not giving the ball away cos the moment we lose it, with our full backs pressed so far up the pitch (Kakay and Manning both scoring yesterday tells its own story), we have huge gaps in behind when possession is turned over.

But on another day we could have won, but conceding three goals to a team that had not played in the league for 5 months is not what the doctor ordered, and for me, the set up was wrong. What concerns me is that defensively we don’t seem to have changed or improved from last season. You can bring in Maldini, Rio Ferdinand, even Bobby Moore in their prime but if you don’t do the basics of defending, like tracking back and staying with your runners, it won’t make any difference. It’s clear by now that Warburton doesn’t give a crap about defending. We’ve conceded 70+ goals 2 seasons in a row. That’s over 2 goals a game we need to score just to get a draw. Last season we got away with it because we had Wells (for half a season), Hugill and Eze. We have none of them now. Concede 70+ this season and we’ll almost certainly be relegated to League 1. In his post match interview all Warbs focused on was us missing scoring chances. What he should have been more concerned about was another dire defensive display where we conceded 3 goals, this time to a League 1 opponent. It’s genuinely like he doesn’t think conceding 70 goals in a season is a major problem that will see you relegated really quickly.
