Charlton boss Bowyer linked with QPR job – but is there anything in it? By West London Sport 03/04/2019
Lee Bowyer has been linked with the manager’s job at QPR.
Reports have suggested that the Charlton boss is a contender for the role and has been sounded out.
Bowyer’s contract at The Valley is due to expire at the end of the season and he has not yet been offered a new deal. So is there anything in it? Bowyer, whose chief scout at Charlton is former long-serving QPR coach Steve Gallen, would be keen to take over at Rangers following the recent sacking of Steve McClaren.
The former Newcastle midfielder was recently at Loftus Road to watch a game and was introduced to QPR co-owner Tony Fernandes.
However, Fernandes, who has installed previous managers, is not currently leading the process of appointing McClaren’s successor.
Bowyer is not currently among the front-runners for the Rangers job. Tim Sherwood is director of football Les Ferdinand’s first choice and there is also strong interest in Gary Rowett, Mark Warburton and Michael Appleton.
Sherwood, Rowett, Warbuton and Appleton are currently QPR’s top candidates Former R’s winger Gareth Ainsworth, now Wycombe manager, was until recently regarded by Rangers as one of five possible replacements for McClaren, who had been on thin ice for some time.
Ainsworth is not out of the running, but momentum behind him has slowed somewhat in recent weeks.
QPR want to make a quick appointment, largely because financial constraints mean that recruitment this summer will be absolutely crucial and the club want to be ahead of the game – there was unease behind the scenes at McClaren’s reluctance to sign the kind of lower-level players Rangers are looking to bring in and develop.
If an appointment is not made before the end of the season, Bowyer and others could come into the equation and he would be able to tick one of QPR’s boxes in that he has worked on a limited budget at Charlton.
At the moment, though, he is not in the frame.

Just go & ask MK Dons how much compensation they would want for Paul Tisdale. He has been my choice for at least the past three appointments & probably will be for the next two!
Since Tune Group took control we have only once employed a manager that was currently working as a First Team Manager (JFH), although Chris Ramsey was still in the game. Please can't me move away from only those that have been recently dismissed from other clubs. That limits the quality & the quantity of those available.
Sky reporting it doesn't stop it being clickbait harr. Mind you, I wouldn't be upset with Paul Warne.

Shock, horror, Bowyer received a new contract at Charlton last night. He does not know where the QPR speculation came from.................try asking your agent! WLS been consistently clear that there was no truth to the rumour.
SSN QPR LINKS SPECUALTION'
Charlton manager Lee Bowyer was linked with the vacant position art QPR this week, but he has revealed that the rumours are "speculation" and he could be signing a new contract.
“It’s obviously all speculation. I’ve not spoken to anyone at QPR, so I’m not sure where that’s come from. It’s all part of football. When you’re doing well, you get linked to jobs and that’s a credit to everyone at the football club," he said.
“I received an email last night [with a new contract], but if I’m honest I don’t really understand it! Richard Murray is in today so I’ll have to go through it with him. It’s a bit different to any contract I’ve seen before so we’ll see if he can make sense of it.
“Jacko [assistant manager Johnnie Jackson], Marsh [goalkeeping coach Andy Marshall] and Steve Gallen [head of recruitment] have all worked hard for the club and we’ve all been successful. The club is moving in the right direction, so I can’t see why they wouldn’t keep us all on. I can’t see there being any problems.”

www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/football/portsmouth-fc/portsmouth-boss-kenny-jackett-dismisses-speculation-linking-him-with-vacant-manager-s-job-at-qpr-1-8877857Kenny Jackett distancing himself - more 'speculation'. With Ferdinand & Hoos running the recruitment, it seems that Sherwood remains odds on for the job. My guess is that they are only talking to him, no one else, and the delay in announcing it is because he is reluctant or seeking assurances / negotiating hard. With such a tough game on Saturday, on the TV as well, it is set up for an announcement of Timmy's appointment tomorrow but Eustace in charge for Norwich - with Timmy watching from the stands. That way he does not get off to a possible hiding. Not happy, but we have to get on with it. Hopefully, Ferdinand, Ramsey and Sherwood can rekindle some of their successes of the past - especially with the youth. But, I think the supporters will be far lees patient than they have been with Holloway and McClaren, if it does not work out, then Sir Les will be a casualty as well. I think he has done a good job, but if he makes an unpopular choice then he will probably have to face the consequences if it does not work out. Having said that, the list of 'candidates' is hardly inspiring. But by definition, they are out of work for a reason.

OK they're not linked but there are two managers I'd like us to consider:
Ivo Vieira currently manager of Moreirense, a club currently 5th in the Portuguese top division. To give you an idea Moreirense has a population of 5,000 people & a 9,000 capacity stadium. He's spent most of his career managing small Portuguese clubs with no money and last year managed Estoril in the top division & despite their relegation was considered to have done a good job and was offered the Moreirense. He plays a fast counter-attacking game and used to working with small, young squads and no money. What he's done this year is an almost Leicester-like job. No idea of his English but most Portuguese of his age would have studied English and he will be dirt cheap & 43 yrs old. It may be too late to get him.
Ian Burchnall an English manager currently at Östersunds FK in Sweden. He's very young at 36 but he never played and has been coaching since 22. He was no2 to Graham Potter who is now at Swansea and took over at Östersunds FK and took them to 6th last season (he is also the manager of one Ravel Morrisson at the moment). He has predominantly coached in Scandinavia where there is no money and its all about youth development

If Sherwood is appointed, the general reaction will be one of disappointment IMHO. But the expectation will also be quite low. Normally, there is a lift from any new appointment with renewed hope for the future. The supporters may well be less tolerant with Timmy, but what with the limitations we face next season, if he does do ok and utilizes the youngsters, that may well translate far more positively, just because of the low expectation. But if he comes in and we struggle to survive this season, he will start next season under undue pressure. So will Sir Les.

Frankly he can’t do any worse than SM since the start of the year We do need to give the new manager a chance to look at our current squad though and allow him some input into who goes/stays this summer unless they all leave since we can’t afford them

Frankly he can’t do any worse than SM since the start of the year We do need to give the new manager a chance to look at our current squad though and allow him some input into who goes/stays this summer unless they all leave since we can’t afford them Yeah, you'd hope any potential appointee would have done their research into who's on our books and how they're getting on, at least vaguely. Ironically that was rumoured to be what McLaren was doing when we were sounding him out prior to Ollie going - he always sounded like he knew more than most pundits when he covered us on telly, like the Fulham game. But even as fans, stuff like who's out of contract, who's on loan, who's coming through in each position is public knowledge. What we don't need is someone coming in and figuring it out all over again. I see the logic and there's a reason these people are qualified managers and we aren't, but there's always that sense that managers need to see it directly for themselves to make a judgement, leading to that awkward period we always seem to go through of people picking line-ups we've already seen not work etc etc. No issue with Eustace just getting us over the line til the end of the year and it's better we have due diligence and hold interviews and hopefully put that process directly in Hoos and Ferdinand's hands rather than Fernandes. All the same, it is annoying looking at clubs like Brentford, Preston etc actually having the foresight to have a plan and culture in place and when a manager goes, someone else on their list slots right back in. Probably being naive but if McClaren's appointment is on Fernandes' shoulders (as it seems to be), maybe that's a signal that he will acknowledge that and keep broadly out of it.

www.football.london/queens-park-rangers-fc/qpr-news-exclusive-manager-search-16087102Exclusive: Contact made with Ligue 2 manager to replace Steve McClaren at QPRIt's thought that the club have contacted the Portuguese manager with regards to his interest in the role. Queens Park Rangers are stepping up their search for a manager after making contact with manager Rui Almeida. Football.london understand that the Portuguese manager has been contacted by a representative claiming to work on behalf of the club to assess his interest in the role. Almeida is thought to be one of a number of candidates initially contacted about the role. The 49-year-old is currently manager of French Ligue 2 side Troyes where he has been performing above expectation this season. Despite working on a comparatively small budget, a seven-match unbeaten run has seen Almeida's side move to fifth in the second division, putting them firmly in contention for promotion to Ligue 1. While not a household name in the UK, the former Panathinaikos F.C., S.C. Braga, Sporting CP assistant manager may be remembered by some fans on these shores after being in contention for the role of Barnsley manager in January last year. This was after after Paul Heckingbottom was lured away by Leeds United. Contact remains between QPR and Almeida is thought to be in its early stages, however it's thought that any deal for Almeida to move to west London would be based on him joining at the end of the season. It remains to be seen whether this could be a sticking point for the Hoops, who currently have John Eustace in temporary charge. Steve McClaren's former assistant will take charge of QPR while the search for a replacement takes place. Tim Sherwood is the favourite to take on the role, while the likes of Darren Moore, Lee Bowyer and Gareth Ainsworth have also been linked. The Hoops have placed John Eustace in temporary charge with Steve McClaren's former assistant leading QPR while the search for a replacement takes place. Almeida is not considered to be a front runner for the role but will hope to follow in the footsteps of his fellow countrymen Nuno Espirito Santo at Wolves and José Manuel Gomes at Reading if he were to secure a job in England.

IMO we need to wait until we find out which division we'll be playing in next season before deciding on who to get as our new manager. A manager who's good for a relegation fight in the Championship isn't necessarily a manager who's good for a promotion push in League 1

When asked about the QPR vacancy, Sherwood told BT Sport’s Score programme as quoted by Football.London: “It is a difficult job, but it is also a fantastic football club.
“If they have got realistic expectations for the future, it is an opportunity for someone to go in and it is something I would look at, but at the moment it is just speculation and a lot of talk.”
