Even before Rangel picked up his injury today, I wasn't sure about this. Yes he has helped our defence this season, but I'd rather see Furlong playing than him. The short term benefits are out weighed by the long term disadvantages for me.
If we are trying to attract promising youth players to the club with our "clear pathway to the first team" as a selling point, this hardly endorses that. More significantly, next season we lose our parachute payments which are worth £16.6 million this season. Whatever we are paying to Rangel in wages, whatever we have paid to his agent and any ancillary costs could have been put towards alleviating this loss.

However, he's been a great signing and not just for his contribution on the pitch. Furlong should be eased back in to the starting lineup but we need cover so Rangel fits that purpose.
