First part of an extended interview with Fernandes up on the offish. Not much new information really but he certainly seems to have taken some of the PR people's advice for once! Brief redux for those who can't watch it...
- States his thanks and appreciation for Holloway. Thinks he did a really good job and was the right fit for the 'transition' the club was going through. Tough decision to let him go. General feeling of the board, shareholders, Hoos and Ferdinand that we needed to move forward in some areas.
- McClaren admired since his time under Redknapp - cites his experience of working individually with players in training, particularly Hoilett, and fought hard to keep him on at the time.
- Says new manager search was "probably the most extensive we'd ever done" (interesting to me as the impression was that McClaren was pretty much lined up for a while, so either that wasn't strictly the case or the search for a potential new manager began quite a bit earlier).
- Longs for stability and consistency, states mistakes have been made. McClaren has a "clean deck" with a great group of lads.
- McClaren's pedigree for coaching and developing players is a big part of the appointment, particularly with FFP and the finances of the club. The squad being so young is a component of that decision, but there's no ceiling in terms of age of what players we want to improve.
- Remit for the season. "We want to be competitive, we want to be up there". Is at pains to point out that he isn't setting a position target or any kind of prediction (makes a nice change...). There are big challenges with FFP etc. but that doesn't have to be "an impediment to us doing well" if we bring in a few players and we get the best out of the squad we have, "who knows?" . "One clear remit is to get the culture right, get the squad right and to make our players better".
- Says nerves when the season gets closer may change his feelings a bit, but he doesn't fear any team in our division and feels that if we can play to our best potential (citing Villa away, Wolves, Cardiff and Sheff Utd at home) we can do well. "Consistency of board, consistency of transfer policy, consistency of manager, consistency of formation". Says "anything can happen" in the Championship and we should "aim high" and "enjoy it".
- States that despite the mistakes, he wants to reassure fans that they love the club and are dedicated to putting the right infrastructure in place. Mistakes have been made but haven't quit. "Have faith". Dream of building a sustainable club. The training ground and the new stadium are still goals and it's not easy "but the dream is still alive".
