A bit more on Hugill from WLS: So, no clearer really... It seems like Chris Martin is the one Stevie Mac really wants as a striker. It would be a bit cold to play around with Hugill and then sign Martin.

There are rumours that Birmingham have been placed under a transfer embargo.
I would have thought that this would be too soon to include the accounts for the year ending May 2018.
Could they have failed FFP for the previous three years?

Could they have failed FFP for the previous three years? Terry, the FL's calculations are based on the last two years lodged accounts and a projection for the current season which, I think, is submitted at the beginning of March.

I just wonder if McClaren can get the best out of Washington and if he could yet be an important player for us? The intelligence of Washington's runs have been called into question during his time at Loftus Road, but based on the two games so far it may well be the case that Steve McClaren could know how to get the best of the striker as he enters into a decisive campaign for his QPR career.

Some pretty crazy deals this window. But the goalkeeper valuations are beyond my comprehension. WBA lost Foster and purchased Johnstone for more than twice the sum received. But how is Gunn worth £13.5m to Southampton? At Loftus Road we probably saw him at his very weakest last term, but 4 times the value of Smithies? Southampton have just extended McCarthy's contract and they also have Forster, so will Gunn even be first choice? Then there is Joe Hart.......the most expensive reserve keeper of all time. He makes the Rob Green situation look almost reasonable.... If there was a competition to guess the valuation of a goalkeeper I would score zero points.

It's fairly simple Rick.
If you think the 'keeper is good & worth purchasing, you price him low. If you think the 'keeper is average you offer four times their value. Especially if your buying from a Manchester club!
West Brom fans must feel cheated & Saints fans should have known this is what you get from a Hughes or Redknapp type manager.

It is interesting how things can look with and without a QPR hat on. I think for a lot of us, we see it in terms of losing Smithies for chicken feed because of the comparative value of other keepers (particularly Gunn) this window, rather than (as you rightly point out) clubs knowing you can push someone like Hughes to fork over money well over the odds any day of the week. That is to say, when it's our player as a comparison, we're more likely to think we've been mugged off, as opposed to seeing it in terms of Southampton having their pants pulled down. I guess it's all relative to the clubs' finances - Dele Alli was only £5m when MK Dons needed cash through the door less than 4 years ago. I mean, the relatively low figure for Smithies still rankles (even with the caveats of other clubs knowing we need the money and he's got no upper Championship experience etc. and Gunn arguably has more development potential) but the frankly weird values of goalkeepers in this market is absolutely baffling to me. Just cannot make sense of it.

Ipswich fans are still expecting him to go to a Premier club for a minimum of £8 million as they regard him as the best 'keeper in The Championship for many a year. Not a chance of that happening as he is quite good! Mind you, I think the Gunn fee is fair when compared to what Norwich are paying for twelve months of Rhodes! I'm assuming that Norwich are still in need of a 'keeper for this season as well, or is the understudy to a young loanee going to get the position? The mind boggles. Thank God we are no longer involved in the crazy side of the market!

BIRMINGHAM EMBARGO
Birmingham are hopeful they can resolve their FFP obligations and overturn a temporary transfer embargo imposed by the EFL, according to Sky sources.
The league are currently working through FFP submissions from all their clubs, which were made on June 30, and are imposing sanctions where clubs have fallen foul.
The Blues are continuing to pursue their transfer targets but cannot register any new players until the transfer embargo has been lifted.

Thank God we are no longer involved in the crazy side of the market! Blessing and a curse really, right? It works both ways, as well. I'm only talking speculatively, but say Cardiff are the only club properly in for buying Smithies and he's looking to make the step up, Warnock is in a position of coming to us, knowing we desperately need the money to overhaul the defence and can offer a price. Take it or leave it. By the same token, us having such a developmentally-focused squad with sweet FA in the bank also means we can't have our pants pulled down by other clubs. We aren't and cannot get involved in hefty bidding wars - if a club comes to us and tries to mug us off with an inflated sale price for a player, we'll just walk away and they won't get their sale. So while the likes of Forest and Norwich can swan around dishing out big fees, they're also the clubs that will have agents' licking their lips, knowing they can get a lot more cash than their charges would normally be worth...which used to be us. On balance, while it's frustrating seeing us flounder, I much prefer us now having red lines on transfer policy and an actual plan.

Rangers are having a look at the 18-year-old defender, who has yet to make his senior debut but has been on the radars of several clubs because of his performances for Stevenage’s Under-18s. Those clubs include Bournemouth, who also had Ali on trial earlier this year and have been considering making an offer for him.

Apparently Ali looked really, really promising and turned in a good performance. Mate also mentioned that a Wigan scout was entering the ground ahead of him too, presumably to have a look at Ali.

Do you think we will see anymore signings? Perhaps one more centre back if Philips not up to it but I expect we will need to sell one more and send a few out on loan before we buy as squad still quite big if we are including all the youngsters who played last season as first team squad standard? Still overloaded in centre mid so expect to see one of them go probably Goss although McLaren could see him as similar to the role Will Hughes played for Derby but not as good? When does Luongo return to training?

Could do with cover at full back too since we have lost Perch, Onuoha and Robinson who could cover there. Forgot about Martin but can’t see that signing unless Sylla leaves? Smith, Smyth, Washington, Sylla, Eze and Wheeler as our forward players so one of them probably needs to go first? McLaren tended to favour the 4-2-3-1 formation at Derby too

McLaren tended to favour the 4-2-3-1 formation at Derby too I agree on the full-backs as we are light, though I think we're not too badly stretched. I'd imagine we'd be going in with Furlong (Kakay as cover) and Bidwell (Hamalainen as cover). If we're really pushed, Manning has filled in at LB and Wszolek at RB, though obviously that isn't ideal. The papers say Martin but yeah, if Sylla or one of the others don't go then we're essentially stacking up and paying strikers we aren't using, which isn't what we're supposed to be doing.

Back in May, The Sun reported of interest from Queens Park Rangers in David McGoldrick. Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers were also claimed to be interested in the 30-year-old forward, who left Ipswich Town at the end of last season. It was reported by The Sun in May that QPR were among five clubs interested in securing the services of the former Southampton and Nottingham Forest forward. However, Rangers look set to miss out on the Republic of Ireland international, with Championship rivals Sheffield United seemingly taking the lead. According to The Star, McGoldrick will join the Blades on trial and could feature in their pre-season friendly match against Bradford City at Valley Parade this week. The former Notts County forward will reportedly train with United and will aim to earn a contract with Chris Wilder’s side, who challenged for the Championship playoffs last season. The 30-year-old would have been a decent signing for QPR, especially as he would have been a free signing, but it seems that the London club could miss out on the former Forest forward.

From West Sussex Gazette. This or lower, is where most of our youngsters coming through will end up in the long run. Only a few of them will make it with us or better, at higher levels. www.westsussextoday.co.uk/sport/football/reds-sign-former-qpr-striker-grego-cox-1-8569072Reds sign former QPR striker Grego-CoxBy MARK DUNFORD Published: 15:02 Updated: 15:06 Monday 16 July 2018 Crawley Town have signed former QPR and Woking striker Reece Grego-Cox. The Hammersmith-born 21-year-old has played in Reds' last two friendlies on trial. Grego-Cox played on loan at Newport County, Warren Feeney's old club, in 2016. The 5ft 7ins frontman has represented Republic of Ireland at u17, 19 and u21 levels. In May 2014, The Irish Post named Grego-Cox as one of 10 young British-based prospects for the Republic of Ireland. They noted how his 'pace and aggressive style of play' had proven successful with the international under-17 team. Queens Park Rangers under-18 manager Steve Gallen compared Grego-Cox to first-team player Charlie Austin in August 2014. Manager Harry Kewell said: “Reece has really done well since he joined us for pre-season and we think he’s got a lot to offer. He works hard, he can play in different attacking roles and I like his hunger to make the most of this opportunity.” His most recent spell was at Woking in the National League South when he scored four times. He has also represented his country 17 times at youth level for the Republic of Ireland.

From the Offie good news www.qpr.co.uk/news/club-news/joe-lumley-signs-new-qpr-contract/Joe Lumley signs new QPR contractAndy Watkins @andywa7kins GOALKEEPER Joe Lumley has signed a new three-year deal at QPR. The 23-year-old – who joined Rangers at the age of 16 – has committed his future until the summer of 2021, much to his delight. “I’ve been here since I was 16, so I’m delighted to sign for another three years,” he told www.qpr.co.uk. “Since I joined I’ve always wanted to play for the first team so I’d do anything for that. Now that the new contract’s all sorted I can push ahead.” Lumley impressed last season on loan at League One outfit Blackpool, where he kept nine clean sheets during 18 appearances before being recalled in April following an injury to team-mate Matt Ingram. After taking the gloves for the R’s two final Championship games of the 2017/18 campaign, he’ll now battle it out with Ingram for the number one spot under the stewardship of Gavin Ward following the recent departure of Alex Smithies to Cardiff City. “My game’s improved massively since I’ve been here and I’ve learnt so much,” he added. “I’ve taken a lot from the goalkeeper coaches that I’ve had here and now with Gavin Ward I’m learning more every day, so hopefully it can only get better.” Lumley’s contract, which originally expired in 2019, keeps him in W12 until June 2021

From The 72 quoting The Sun so how much credence you put in it is questionable! the72.co.uk/110381/qpr-close-signing-international-defender-world-cup/QPR close to signing international defender- Was at World Cupby HARRY MAIL on JUL 19, 2018 QPR are close to signing Australian international defender Trent Sainsbury, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon. The 26-year-old is currently on the books at Chinese Super League side Jiangsu Suning but is looking for a move away this summer. He spent last season on loan at Grasshoppers in Switzerland. QPR have been in the hunt for some new signings as they look to prepare for their upcoming Championship campaign. Their new manager, Steve McClaren, is looking to bolster his defence by bringing in an international defender into his ranks. Trent Sainsbury started his career in Australia with spell at Perth Glory and AIS as a youngster before being snapped up by Central Coast Mariners in 2010. He also had a brief spell with Sheffield United’s academy in his early career. He spent four seasons playing for Central Coast Mariners in the A-League and impressed for them. He earned himself a move to the Dutch Eredivisie with PEC Zwolle in 2014. He spent two years in Holland before moving to China to join Jiangsu Suning in 2016 for $1.5 million. Sainsbury was initially a key first-team player in the Chinese Super League and played 41 games in his first season at the club. However, he played only 5 times for them in the 2016/17 campaign and was loaned out to Inter Milan for the remainder of the season, where he played just once. He then had a stint at Grasshopper last season but now wants to find a new permanent home. QPR in the Championship would be a great move for him and is a deal that could happen for him.
