Have to say I don't always agree to Dave Mc or Clive Whittingham, though they do usually offer more lengthily considered views than most. Not sure their opinions are any more valid than anyone else's deeply held view though. No-one is 'right' or 'wrong' in an exchange of personal perceptions - we all think ours is the correct one. Not sure personal attacks on discussion boards do anything more than claim that somehow 'I'm cleverer than you...' I mean, it's football so it's mostly subjective, so I certainly agree with you. But when it comes down to stuff on transfers and what we are and are not capable of as a club, it does rankle. People screaming at the club and calling Fernandes/Hoos/Ferdinand etc. a c*nt on Twitter for not throwing money we literally do not have on players we cannot afford are just objectively wrong. I know less about Dave Mac but at least people like Clive live and breathe QPR, go home and away and write in depth. He isn't infallible and gets plenty wrong (and says as much) and I'm biased as he's a mate. But he has credibility with his opinions because it's rooted in decades of long suffering, active support and backing his opinions up with arguments, stats and insight. He has an opinion to share and has the courtesy to explain it. That's always going to carry a lot more weight with me than someone screaming at clouds on the internet. Sometimes you've got to stand by the style of your opinions. If all someone offers is drive-by, one-liner and solely negative posts without context or argument, don't be surprised when people either give some back or don't rate it. Also agree the personal insults are a bad look. Though I do get a little smile out of how people in this thread always reply to the insult bait but won't reply when you challenge their view politely!

If I came in here and told you the earth is flat, that's an opinion I'm entitled to have. But I'd be flat out wrong ( pardon the pun) and some one with a bit of common sense would be right to point out the foolishness of my comments. Too many QPR fans come out with stuff that shows no thought or understanding of our situation and what that means. It irks me and other QPR fans who are equally passionate about our club but actually do put some thought, common sense and a bit of research into things instead of just coming out Twitter style with the one sentence paranoia posts attacking the club.

Smithies joined the R’s in August 2015 and went on to make more than 100 appearances for the club. In the 2016/17 season Smithies was voted Player of the Season while last term he was a consistent figure in the side despite tough competition from both Matt Ingram and Joe Lumley. From the Offie www.qpr.co.uk/news/club-news/qpr-sign-centre-back-toni-leistner/QPR sign centre back Toni LeistnerPaul Morrissey @pjmorrissey77 QPR have completed the signing of defender Toni Leistner following the expiry of his contract with FC Union Berlin. The 27-year-old German centre-back joins on a three-year deal and adds vital experience to Steve McClaren’s young squad. Leistner – who was the subject of interest from the Bundesliga and Championship after turning down a new deal at Union Berlin in March – has flown out to Portugal to join up with his new team-mates as they continue their pre-season preparations on the Algarve. “I feel very proud,” he told www.qpr.co.uk. “QPR is a big club and a traditional club so it is good to be here. “I like to play football the hard way. I love the physical side of the game and I hope I can give the supporters a lot.” A close friend of Sebastian Polter, Leistner admits he sought the opinion of the former R’s striker who encouraged him to make the move to Loftus Road. “He told me only good things about QPR” Leistner added. “He said the fans are very crazy, positive and he loved playing here. “I also met the manager and he convinced me with the style he wants to play. It made my choice easy.” Leistner becomes McClaren’s first signing as QPR boss, and the R’s chief is delighted with his capture. “With Nedum Onuoha, Jack Robinson and James Perch leaving the club, and Grant Hall coming back from a long-term injury, we are obviously short in that area,” McClaren said. “We have been looking for the last month for centrebacks, and we believe we have found a very good one in Toni. “He has been much sought after, he’s run his contract down and many people were chasing his signature, from the Bundesliga and the Championship. “I have watched him play, we have done a lot of character references on him and I went out to Berlin to meet him, to look him in the eye and speak with him. “He is a leader, a winner and dominant in the air but can also play, so he seems an ideal fit for how we want to go forward. “We have got a young squad, and Onuoha, Robinson and Perch were all experienced players, so getting someone in of Toni’s age and experience is crucial. “I am delighted to have got him.”

....and from football.london www.football.london/west-ham-united-fc/players/jordan-hugill-west-ham-qpr-14851483QPR leading chase for West Ham striker Jordan Hugill but face competitionThe Championship outfit have other clubs in their division ready to take the Hammers frontman on loan next season By Sam Inkersole West Ham Correspondent 14:17, 1 JUL 2018 UPDATED 14:18, 1 JUL 2018 Queen's Park Rangers have emerged as favourites to sign West Ham striker Jordan Hugill on loan next season but will have to fend off competition for his signature. Steve McClaren's side are thought to be leading the race for the 26-year-old striker, who only arrived in east London six months ago on Transfer Deadline Day for a reported £8m fee from Preston North End. Hugill totalled just 22 minutes of first team football in the second half of last season, all of them from the substitutes bench, as he failed to force his way into the plans of then manager David Moyes. Football.London understands that Hugill was brought in just in case the Hammers were relegated last season but as it transpired, they weren't and Hugill is not likely to be part of new manager Manuel Pellegrini's thoughts for the upcoming season. The manager will run the rule over Hugill in pre-season but a loan move away from the club is likely. A permanent move isn't, unless the club can recoup the majority of what they shelled out for the frontman. Hugill's former club Preston North End would be interested in a return, as would Sheffield Wednesday as they both plot a path to promotion from the Championship to the Premier League. West Ham have Javier Hernandez, Andy Carroll and Marko Arnautovic as their first team strikers for next season and wouldn't be averse to brining in another forward this summer, though that is believed to be a lower priority signing as Pellegrini re-shapes his squad.

Don’t get the Hugill clamour , saw him and wasn’t over impressed.. Do like we’re doing business under radar and as of signing of Hall Scowen Freeman, I know anything about him but trust the new BFG will be a great signing with Hall and Lynch getting fit, defence might make me less nervous.

Nice to see a CB signed.
This is the area of most need and it's vital in the Championship to have a CB who is dominant in the air. Hopefully, he is just that.

It is all about perceptions - QPR signing Leistner and the impact on Villa www.hitc.com/en-gb/2018/07/02/aston-villa-not-getting-toni-leistner-has-to-be-treated-as-a-con/Aston Villa not getting Toni Leistner has to be treated as a concern Aston Villa were said to be interested in Toni Toni Leistner, but he ended up at Queens Park Rangers. Berlin´s Toni Leistner reacts after the German Cup DFB Pokal second round football match BVB Borussia Dortmund v 1 FC Union Berlin in Dortmund, western Germany on October 26, 2016. According to Berliner Kurier, Aston Villa were interested in Union Berlin defender Toni Leistner but he has picked Queens Park Rangers ahead of them. QPR announced the signing of Leistner today, and that has to be of some concern for Villa, if they were interested in the defender. QPR have hardly pulled up any trees since dropping down into the Championship, but if they are now outmuscling them for transfer targets, it is hard to see where Villa can turn. Villa manager Steve Bruce reacts after a near miss during the Sky Bet Championship match between Aston Villa and Middlesbrough at Villa Park on September 12, 2017 in Birmingham, England. The claret and blues have a very limited budget this summer, with loans and frees transfers likely to be all they can bring in, due to their financial problems. Villa’s options are, therefore, limited and losing out on potential targets is a blow. Steve Bruce, Manager of Aston Villa during the The Emirates FA Cup Third Round match between Aston Villa and Peterborough United at Villa Park on January 6, 2018 in Birmingham, England. Leistner may have been a bit of an unknown quality in English football, but if QPR are now more appealing to players than Villa then it says a lot about Steve Bruce’s side’s current plight. And this summer looks like it could be massive challenge, as Villa look to somehow attract talent to the club, despite the current uncertainty.

Hopefully Villa failing to snare Leistner says as much about his priorities/motivations and how we sell our 'vision' to players as it does their own financial problems. I'd worry for Villa next season - weird dressing room mix coming up of high earners with low motivation sold a Premier League dream with low earning newcomers. Sound familiar?

By Phil Spencer 11:30, 2 JUL 2018 QPR have been handed a welcome boost in their hunt for Chris Martin with the news that he hasn't been included in Derby's pre-season trip to the Canary Islands. Frank Lampard is whipping his squad away for a spot of warm-weather training in Tenerife, but has opted to leave out the 29-year-old, alongside former Watford man Matej Vydra who is reportedly on the cusp of a move to Leeds. Lampard explained the reason for leaving the duo at home, saying: "Vydra had a small injury which has been dealt with. He hasn't trained properly. "It was much better for him and the medical team to get one-on-one work back at the training ground. "So, he has got a week there to get himself ready and we hope he will then be ready to join in with the rest of the lads. "There was no point in him travelling with 25 of us here (to Tenerife) as there is a lot of work to be done across the board. "And similar with Chris Martin. "He has had some issues. Again, he will have his own programme. He will be able to build up on the work he needs to do and hopefully we will go back to two players that will be fit and ready." The striker has been linked with a reunion for former Rams boss Steve McClaren this summer.
According to The Mirror, the Rams are hoping to offload the striker as they look to reduce their wage bill ahead of the new campaign, with the Hoops thought to be favourites to secure the frontman.

We understand Birmingham, Middlesbrough and Leeds are also interested in signing the forward, who spent last season on loan at Sunderland and Aston Villa. Like I keep boring on about in other threads, FFP just doesn't serve as an adequate deterrent to splurging unsustainably if the rewards on offer in the Premier League are so disproportionately huge for securing promotion. What's £6m when you've got the chance to earn £100m+ and a £8m negotiated slap on the wrist a few years later? Obviously it can all go so very wrong. Look at us, Villa and so on. But with those sums on offer and football club owners being fully aware that they can just walk away if it all goes wrong, where's the incentive not to gamble? Say Forest do go up, splurge again then come down with a bunch of overpaid players on long contracts, Evangelos Marinakis isn't going to be out shaking a bucket is he? Side note, I only just realised that Forest's chairman, Nigel Doughty, is the father of Michael Doughty, one of our youth products who's now at Posh.

From thisisfutbol thisisfutbol.com/2018/07/blogs/scottish-premier-league/rangers-interested-in-dwight-pascal/RANGERS INTERESTED IN DWIGHT PASCALDate: 5th July 2018 at 5:30pm Written by: Joe Crabb Rangers are in the hunt to sign in-demand Barnet teenager Dwight Pascal, but will face competition from Championship clubs QPR and Reading, according to the Sun. The newspaper reported on their live transfer blog on Thursday that Rangers are one of the clubs interested in landing the 17-year-old right-back after the Bees were relegated to England’s fifth division. The report indicates that Barnet want to sign the English defender to a new contract, yet other teams could be looking to land Pascal by means of a compensation fee as opposed to a transfer fee. Pascal is currently Barnet’s youngest ever fielded player, having taken part in an EFL Trophy cup match at the age of 15. Good move for Rangers?Potentially. Pascal is a highly thought of promising talent, that could develop into a good starting player for the Rangers aged only 17, but the transfer brings with it an element of risk. The 17-year-old is relatively inexperienced, and to this point has not played at any level higher than England’s fourth division, the Sky Bet League Two. This standard is not up to Rangers opposition standard, and this could potentially highlight any weaknesses within Pascal’s game. This is Futbol rating – 5/10 Likely to happen? It could do. Steven Gerrard has been aggressive during his first season as the Gers manager in terms of transfer business and has acquired many of his top targets already. The competition faced by the Gers could become a sticking point, as the youngster may desire to stay in England, and QPR are closely located to Barnet. Rangers Europa League qualification could be a major factor in attracting Pascal to the Ibrox, as the youngster would not have played anywhere near that level before.

From WLS some sense! www.westlondonsport.com/qpr/football-qpr-leeds-united-west-ham-jordan-hugill-linkedTransfer gossip: Could QPR snap up Hugill?By West London Sport 08/07/2018 A look at some of the recent transfer speculation involving QPR… Leeds United want to sign Jordan Hugill on loan from West Ham but face a battle with QPR, The Sun on Sunday has declared. It comes after reports the R’s are leading a race for the former Preston man and are favourites to sign him. Is there anything in it?QPR were interested in Hugill when he was at Preston and believed they were making progress with a bid to sign him for around £1.3m before bids from several other clubs led to his market value massively increasing and he eventually joined West Ham for £9m. They have made enquiries about taking him on loan from the Hammers, as have several other clubs – including Leeds. The loan fee would be a stumbling block for Rangers as it stands. There is a feeling within QPR that West Ham might sell Hugill rather than loan him out, which would definitely put him out of Rangers’ reach. On the flip side, as Hugill has now relocated to the south east, there is a feeling that a loan move to another London club might make sense for all parties. At the moment, though, completing a deal for Derby’s Chris Martin is QPR boss Steve McClaren’s priority in the quest to bring in a striker. Did QPR miss out on Eyoma?Football.London claim QPR missed out on the signing of Aaron Eyoma after he joined Derby County from Arsenal. Eyoma’s search for a club West London Sport revealed in January that the winger, 20, had joined the R’s on trial. Rangers, with several wingers already on their books, decided not to pursue Eyoma. However, he was then among a host of players Get West London subsequently linked with a move to Loftus Road, as were more of the many other trialists Rangers had briefly looked at. Still searching for a new club, Eyoma later impressed during a trial with Derby. With the Rams having now brought him in, Football.London claimed QPR were beaten to his signing by Derby. Huntingdon also linkedQPR are set to launch a bid for Preston defender Paul Huntington, according to The Sun.McClaren was said to be planning to offer £1m for the 30-year-old centre-back. The Sun reported that Huntington has a year remaining on his contract at Deepdale and declared “McClaren is poised to land him on a cut-price deal.” Huntington, who previously had spells at Newcastle and Leeds, missed just two league games for Preston last season and The Sun reported that McClaren wants him for his experience. Is Huntington heading to Loftus Road?Signing an experienced centre-back with leadership qualities is a priority for QPR, particularly because of the departure of Nedum Onuoha, and Huntington is among many players they enquired about prior to signing German defender Toni Leistner. Keen to use the Bosman ruling to their advantage, Rangers have particularly targeted players who have a year or less remaining on their contract and have indicated that they will not sign a new deal – an approach which led to the signings of Josh Scowen, Luke Freeman and now Leistner, for example. Even though the club has been reducing its budget, QPR are still in a position to offer higher wages than some Championship clubs. However, Huntington’s Preston contract includes an option to extend it by a further 12 months, meaning he is effectively under contract for two more years. With that being the case, Preston are seemingly in a position to expect significantly more than £1m for him, so QPR have been looking elsewhere.

www.hitc.com/en-gb/2018/07/08/report-queens-park-rangers-interested-in-curtis-tilt/Queens Park Rangers, Ipswich Town and Reading reportedly want Curtis Tilt of Blackpool in the summer transfer window. Queens Park Rangers, Reading and Ipswich Town are interested in signing Curtis Tilt from Blackpool in the summer transfer window, according to the Mirror (Transfer Live blog, 13:54pm, Sunday, July 8, 2018). It has been reported that Ipswich have already made a bid of £550,000 for the 26-year-old defender. Blackpool are reported to be holding out for £1m for the pacy and talented left-footed central defender. Good signing for Queens Park Rangers? Tilt is a good defender, and the 26-year-old would be a smart signing for QPR in the summer transfer window. Rangers could do with a talented centre-back in his mid-20s, and if £1m is all it takes to sign the former Wrexham star, then the London club should not hesitate. Competition With Ipswich and Reading also reported to be interested in Tilt, QPR do face stiff competition for the defender.

A bit more on Hugill from WLS: So, no clearer really... I'd imagine if we had clearly wanted him before the Hammers transfer, that would perhaps count for something in Hugill's decision making. He's barely played at West Ham as I believe he was only really there because it looked like they could get relegated (?). But all of that counts for nought if they want to sell him - he'd be well out of our price range I'd imagine. Tilt on paper, however, seems a very 'us' signing.
