From westlondonsport Clint Hill won't be coming www.westlondonsport.com/qpr/qprs-defensive-injury-problems-deepen-ahead-middlesbrough-clashQPR captain Onuoha ruled out of Boro gameBy David McIntyre 15/09/2017 QPR’s defensive injury problems have worsened after skipper Nedum Onuoha was ruled out of Saturday’s game against Middlesbrough. Onuoha has picked up a hamstring injury and his absence is a blow for Rangers, as Joel Lynch, Grant Hall, James Perch and Steven Caulker are also unavailable. Lynch has returned to training following his own hamstring problem but is not yet ready to be considered for selection. With manager Ian Holloway concerned by the shortage of defensive cover, Rangers have been considering making a signing. A number of possible options have been discussed, including re-signing former R’s captain Clint Hill, who has been training with the club and this week played for their development side. Hill, who turns 39 next month, is a free agent, having been without a club since leaving Glasgow Rangers after the end of last season. Any new signing would need to be registered by noon on Friday to be eligible for the Middlesbrough game, and on Thursday night Rangers looked unlikely to add to the squad ahead of the trip north. Meanwhile, QPR have signed 19-year-old midfielder Zenon Stylianides, who was recently released by Tottenham.

Surely someone from our undefeated U23 squad will have to at least be on the bench.
Maybe that Giles Phillips guy that featured a few times in pre-season.
They should put Matt Smith back there, sort of the opposite of what Liverpool did with Caulker.

Spurs released 6 youngsters this summer , we have signed two of them.
Re that young lad Zenon we just signedjust read an article on him playing an u23 game for Spurs knowing his sister might pass away while he does so. Sadly she did, what a brave lad, wish him all the best at QPR , same for Charlie Owens

Bit of a rude awakening for us lot this, with a defensive injury crisis coming just as we're about to play a side with a dearth of attacking talent. I wish I understood why they cut the loan system off in the way the Football League did, this is exactly why we need it. It's rotten luck. To steal the point from LFW in their match preview, in the mad money days we had Onyewu brought in to draw a wage rotting on the bench with 69 international caps to his name just in case of defensive injuries, now we're left to scrabble around our (admittedly well performing) U23 squad for defensive cover just like 90% of other clubs our size have been doing for years.
Fingers crossed the players drafted in can step up, it's a big test for them.

What do you think we'll line up with today then? Keep the system in place and have Baptiste in the middle with Furlong and Robinson either side? Bidwell to make a four? Promote some of the youngsters like Chris Paul (though hell of a game to throw them into)? Drop to a back five and utilise Wszołek's engine? Start with Smith up top to provide height to defend corners? Not sure what I'd do really. Probably the first option.
Edit: Also forgot about Hamalainen being around, I guess of the youngsters he with Furlong has the most experience. And Manning is also a wing-back option.

We did have enough time to address thisthough at the last week of the window. We will just have to battle through it for a few weeks . Hopefully it wont affect us taking points off Barnsley and Burton. Todays game is a bonus if we get anything for me.

One word - Caulker

From what I've seen of Caulker this season he is not fit physically or mentally, I can't see him being called upon today.
I'd play Furlong alongside Robinson and Baptiste at the back, with Paul on the bench. Upfront I'd stick with Washington and Mackie so as not to allow Boro to settle on the ball at the back and try to hustle something out of the match.

I'm not sure we necessarily had an issue to address back then though, or were capable of doing so. If a contract is a year at the bare minimum and we've got no money, I don't see how we could have grabbed someone affordable who was capable of being of the right standard without shipping someone else out. We're still paying for too many people who don't feature for us. With the window open, Lynch, Perch and Onouha were all fit. Or in other words, we've had crap luck with defensive injuries and we're having to scrabble around with what we've got rather than pulling the trigger in the transfer window - unusual for us, sure, but that's reality for the majority of clubs at our level and I guess we just have to get used to it. Better to struggle in a game or two now then sign up more bodies when we can expect Lynch and Onouha back in the short/medium term and have more wages for people who aren't playing innit. Agree about today - Boro aren't world beaters but with our away form (even over the last few years!) I don't fancy us at all. At least with what we've seen over the last few games, even if we struggle today, we can be pretty confident that our lot won't just roll over.

Upfront I'd stick with Washington and Mackie so as not to allow Boro to settle on the ball at the back and try to hustle something out of the match. To add to that, from the murmurs I've been hearing, we're not likely to see Caulker for a little while either. Hope I'm wrong. Agree about the line-up - maintaining shape is important and today may be an inappropriate challenge in terms of dropping our youngsters in at the deep end. Both Sylla and Smith could feel aggrieved after coming on and doing well against Wall but Washington and Mackie give us a far higher chance of being able to harry Boro from the front and stop them from playing the way they're most comfortable. Switching that up later in the game and supplying Sylla and Smith (or both) from the flanks is an option, but either pinning Boro back or trying to stretch them seems to make the most sense as both methods let us utilise our midfield three, which is probably our strongest asset. What was so encouraging about the second half on Tuesday was that we didn't start lobbing the ball at Smith/Sylla, but we used them to pin their defence back (not that they needed much invitation to drop) and gave our attacking midfield space to operate on the edge of the box. Not a tactic to start with against Boro for me, but it's nice to see using players to their strengths. Neither of them are much cop at holding the ball up from long balls but they are disruptive and dangerous when you supply them from the wings.

Its bad luck but we know from previous years it can happen. All im saying is Perch was injured 22/8 and Hall and Lynch way before that so we did have time (over a week)to get a replacement all be it not that much. If we lose 2-1 3-1 no qualms from me this week.

In the pub before the Ipswich match we counted up the number of players we had capable of playing at centre back, I can't recall if we got to 8 or 9. This does included a couple of U23s, but that really should be enough.

If we lose 2-1 3-1 no qualms from me this week. It can happen but you can't just stockpile players on a short-term basis when those players are due to come back. Baptiste was only brought in as cover and he's now our main CB for today, a player we brought in precisely for this kind of situation. Even if we could afford another Championship CB and his wages, what happens when Onouha and Lynch are back fit again? Just another person picking up a wage, occasionally sitting on the bench - it's just not feasible. Replacement doesn't mean running for transfers at most clubs - we have plenty of CBs on our books, they unfortunately got injured, so we'll have to make do with kids or some square pegs in round holes for a few weeks. And yeah, if we get beat today then so be it. It's still a very heartening start to the season, just hope heads don't drop if we take a few beatings when we're temporarily weakened.

I guess the money we are wasting on Caulker whatever it is 40. ,50 , 60 k a week has huge affect on our budget. If a player on that money isnt starting, isnt fit or not loaned out where we can get something back, if he dont play hardly any games, its crippling us. Just wish we offloaded in the summer.

Bad timing for another defender getting injured, for me Club never really addressed it before the window closed so now paying the price. But then we had restrictions this Summer so I guess I shouldnt be too harsh.
Have to confess no great fan of the Ex Blackpool defender though, so if we were going to buy more like him glad we didnt bother.
Anyhow just hope we can take some points off Burton and Burton, my biggest dissapointment of the season so far was not beating Millwall, just dont like that Club very much.
Anyhow, I will take the points we have at this stage, if we get four points out of our next two games or even three I would take it.

As Terry said, we have 11 (eleven) players capable of playing at centre back - how many more do you think we need? And as Bow said, we can't keep stockpiling players, those days are gone. We can only get in new players when we've shifted out the incumbents. Caulker will be gone in the summer, we will then be able to get in one (or possibly two) replacements. For the while, future business will be about trying to get upgrades on the players leaving, such as Scowen in for Henry.

I dont really want more though unless they are on improvements what we had like Hall, Bidwell and a few others have been recently. Upgrades like Scowen over Henry as you say is indeed what we need but I feel defence has been neglected a bit.

Anyhow, I will take the points we have at this stage, if we get four points out of our next two games or even three I would take it. I might be mistaken but from memory Harr you wanted Caulker out during the summer, don't rate Lynch, down on Ned for his mistakes, now not a fan of Baptiste who I think has done well for us in the current circumstances. So in theory losing these injured is no issue.
Still I want 6 points from the next 2 games - first just to get the points on the board, second to beat Burton as that is the sort of game we have to be winning to keep up the table, and thirdly a win at Barnsley as we have to start getting some points from what have been relatively good away performances. 1 from 12 is not a true reflection of how we have played away from home imo and we have had some tough games away so far, but we need to get that monkey off our backs before our winless away record becomes a mindset.
I dont mind you call me out as a disliker of defenders 57 but I will say I dont have any real issues with Ned other than he is not a Captain, have no problem with him in our team, I certainly dont constantly moan about him and have stuck up for him as a player on this board on several occasions. Yep, Caulker want away asap, I know he has his issues but disrespected our Clubs name three - four times sorry if you feel that isnt a justified reason to want him to go now with his high wages but I do. If he suddenly gets fit and plays for the rest of the season I will be ok with that but walk away in June please. Baptiste is early days, only really saying doesnt excite me yet but may have a different opinion in six months as I did when we bought Hill and Derry but guess with financial restraints we couldnt do much business better this window.

When Holloway said it would take a few transfer windows for him to sort the club out I didn't grasp the significance. It was not that he needed to sign loads and loads of players, it was that he knew that we'd struggle to get rid of a number of current players and couldn't make new signings until they'd gone.
Caulker should be gone in the summer. To look at the far bigger picture, we shouldn't expect him to play at all this season while he hopefully sorts his life out. If he can do that under our watch we should be proud of our club rather than fret too much over what this has and is costing.
Is Lynch out of contract this summer? He has been a massive disappointment to me. I first saw him in the pre-season friendly against Watford last season where he looked really good but, thinking back, that played to his strengths. Everything was in the air and he totally dominated an out of shape Troy Deeney.
If those two are gone we can do some serious re-building at the back and having seen the quality of the players brought in by the Ollie / Penrice combination we will be far stronger.

I am not sure how many years Lynch signed for but he gets pushed off the ball far too easily - I can think of 2 goals - one was Villa at home. However Ned is definitely in his last year and I think we will really miss him. I wonder if we might see Goss at the back if injuries continue - didn't IH have a look at this possibility in the Bournemouth game - that makes 12 Terry and Roller 😉

IF Caulker leaves us next summer winning his fight against depression, then the club & the indidvidual will deserve a great amount of praise. It does not matter how much money the club have spent on his time at Queens Park Rangers. We gave up the right to be concerned with this when we offered him his excessive contract without carrying out due diligance. And we can't blame Caulker for accepting! There is not a chance that Tottenham & Cardiff were unaware of his problems. Swansea probably were as well. The football community is small & gossip abounds so we have no excuse of not being aware. Limp through this season & our defencive problems can then be addressed.

Still plenty of time for Lynch to up his game then after he returns from injury! It must be touch and go as to whether Perch will be back in time to try to earn a new contract. After being impressed by his improvement this season, I hope he is fit in time to give himself a chance.
