I'm 60 so things like 'Christmas Tree' formations take me out of my football technical depth. I also wonder how tactics and formations can be learned by players who often don't speak the language. But I digress.
To build a good side you need in my humble opinion to have 4 key positions covered by talented players that create the spine of the side.
The first is the goalkeeper that should be not only a shot stopper, commanding in the box but also an intelligent ball distributor. A player that is trusted by his defenders.
The second is a commanding centre half, plus I'd like to see this player as the potential captain. A centre half that dominates the defence, working with his fellow defenders and being the reliable non-nonsense individual that anticipates problems and calmly sorts them. Leads from the back and is motivational when necessary.
The third is a hard working, box to box terrier of a midfield player. Never stops working is always available for a pass plus has controlled aggression so the opposition players know they've been in a game.
Finally it's a proven goalscorer. In my day he'd have been called a goal hanger. Someone that knows where the back of the net is and invariably scores a majority of goals from 12 yards out. Nothing fancy from 40 yards just tap in, rebounds, anticipation.
Get those 4 positions sorted and then you can build a team around them.
That's my theory and perhaps it is shrouded in the mists of time before the Premier League started to make the game too complicated.
Get these 4 positions right and you can compliment them with graceful players, insightful midfielders, solid no nonsense defenders and maybe even an 'Adel type' bonus player that can change a game with some magic.
Looking at the team yesterday I see only the goalkeeper as being anything we can build a side around.
Defensively we look as if we can concede at any minute, we have no captain to encourage, inspire or lead. We have a flimsy midfield where no one really takes the game by the scruff of the neck and dominates it. Upfront, we just don't look like scoring at all irrespective of who we play. Good forwards still score in bad sides.
Whilst we may have some players that are decent, my feelings are unless we get the core spine sorted we will struggle to progress.
Since it is the final week before Xmas, I'd like to wish all posters a Merry Christmas.
Boards like this are a vital way of getting points across and whilst we will all never agree on the love affair we all have with QPR, long may respectful opinions be a part of this message board.
