Ray Pointer RIP Blackpool Gazette Steve Simpson Burnley Football Club goal-scoring legend Ray Pointer, who had a period working on the Blackpool FC coaching staff, has died. Pointer, who was a member of the Burnley squad that shocked the football world by being crowned champions in 1959-60, died in a Blackpool care home at the age of 79. With his shock of light-coloured hair, he earned the nickname The Blond Bomber for his goal-scoring exploits. He played for the Clarets from 1957 to 1964 and won three England caps. Pointer also played for Bury, Coventry and Portsmouth. Former Clarets manager Harry Potts, who became Blackpool boss from 1973 to 1976, recruited Pointer to the Bloomfield Road coaching staff. www.blackpoolgazette.co.uk/news/death-of-former-england-striker-1-7696470 Primarily Burnley...I saw him play for Portsmouth in Dec 1967 in my first QPR game qprreport.blogspot.com/2007/12/nostalgia-qprs-progamme-forty-years-ago.html

I also saw him that day Mac.
That Burnley team was very good. I was only approaching eight when they won the Championship but I can name most of that side! Blacklaw, Angus, Elder, Adamson, Nelson, Harris, Connelly, Pointer, Crawford, McIlroy, Pilkington from memory (might not be all correct though!)
Mind you, I couldn't tell you who played for City last season though!
RIP Ray.
