GOALKEEPER MATT INGRAM JOINS QPR
R’s clinch signing of Wycombe Wanderers custodian ...
QPR sign goalkeeper Matt Ingram from Wycombe Wanderers
22-year-old stopper pens deal until summer of 2020
Ingham will wear the number 29 shirt at Loftus Road
QPR have completed the signing of goalkeeper Matt Ingram from Wycombe Wanderers for an undisclosed fee.
The 22-year-old custodian, who amassed 140 appearances in all competitions for the Chairboys since making his debut in March 2013, has signed a four-and-a-half year deal until the summer of 2020.
Arriving with an ever-growing reputation as the best young keeper in League Two, Ingram is relishing the opportunity to prove his worth at a higher level with Rangers, commenting: “I’m at the stage of my career when I want to progress and I see QPR as a natural step forward for me.
“I spoke to the manager at length and he made me feel really welcome about coming here.
“I’m by no means the finished article – as a 22-year-old goalkeeper, I’ve still got a lot to learn – and coming here gives me another platform to develop and get better.
“The challenge of competing for the shirt will drive me on. Alex (Smithies) is a great keeper and I’m looking forward to working with him and the other keepers.”
R’s boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is looking forward to seeing Ingram compete for a starting berth following his move to Loftus Road, telling http://www.qpr.co.uk: “Matt is one for the future, but he’s joining us at a time when he’s developing into a really good young goalkeeper.
“Alex has the shirt now but I want Matt to challenge him – and that is why we have signed him. Knowing him and his character, he won’t just be coming here to sit on the bench.
“I want the pair of them to push each other to the extreme. That’s the healthiness I want around the whole club.
“We feel Matt will play at the highest level one day. We foresee a very bright future for him.
“He’s big, strong, level-headed, works hard and shows the right mentality. I think we have bought another good asset for the club.”
He added: “My staff are very important when signing a goalkeeper.
“I do like certain attributes in my keepers and he certainly has those. But of course I take advice from my staff and they, like me, believe he has a very bright future.
“He’s young, he’s exciting and he’s British – he ticks all three of those boxes.”
Ingram, who will wear the number 29 shirt, is not eligible to feature in Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Loftus Road.

Matt Ingram joins Queens Park Rangers
The club have today agreed a deal to sell goalkeeper Matt Ingram to Championship side Queens Park Rangers.
The move enables the 22-year-old to fulfil his undoubted potential at a higher level and he leaves Adams Park after almost a decade with the club, having progressed through the youth academy before being handed his professional debut by manager Gareth Ainsworth in 2013.
Ainsworth said: “It’s a fantastic move for Matt Ingram. He was so young coming into the team three years ago, and has been absolutely consistent and he deserves to prove himself at a higher level.
“I believe he is destined for the Premier League and one day we will see him there. He is going to make his mark on football and we have got nothing but pride here for what that young man has achieved.”
Chairman Andrew Howard said: “It’s a testament to the coaching abilities of Gareth, Richard Dobson and Barry Richardson that yet another young player has earned his move to a higher level and we should be proud as a club to have played a massive part in his development.
“This is not a last-minute deal; a lot of work has gone into it to ensure that the fee reflects the quality of the player. The money received from this transfer is another boost on our long path towards becoming debt-free and therefore becoming a stable supporter-owned football club.”
Ingram’s talents were spotted at a young age, saving the crucial penalty in a shootout to win the FA Youth Alliance Cup in 2011, and he was the only representative of a League 2 club to be called into an England goalkeeping camp in that same year.
Spells in non-league with Lewes, Hayes & Yeading and Oxford City saw him further his development and his first taste of Football League action came in March 2013, making his debut against Accrington Stanley at Adams Park.
He retained the number 1 jersey throughout his time with the club, clocking up over 100 consecutive appearances and winning the Football League Young Player of the Month trophy in September last season.
Injury robbed him of the chance to represent his hometown club in the League 2 play-offs at the end of the last campaign, but he has excelled once again this term and his last match – fittingly - saw him and his team-mates applauded off the field after a heroic effort in the FA Cup third round replay against Premier League Aston Villa.
The former John Hampden Grammar School pupil made a total of 140 appearances for the Wanderers, keeping 40 clean sheets. The transfer fee remains undisclosed as a condition of the deal.
Everyone at Wycombe Wanderers would like to wish Matt every success at QPR and thank him for his outstanding contribution to the club.
