Defender Steven Caulker understands why supporters were “stressed” during 2-2 draw …
STEVEN Caulker says the players knew they had given the QPR fans a hard time in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Stoke City at Loftus Road, with the supporters desperate for the team to avoid defeat after the previous 4-0 loss at Manchester United.
Caulker, who netted Rangers’ first equaliser before Niko Kranjcar’s sensational late free-kick earned a share of the spoils, told http://www.qpr.co.uk: “We gave our fans a bit of a hard time really.
“I think they were quite stressed, to be honest – and so were we! But we put in a lot of effort to get that result. It was really important for us not to lose and the fans were definitely a helping hand.
“For us, it’s another point towards safety.”
Stoke led through Mame Diouf before Peter Crouch restored their lead after Caulker’s header, and the former Cardiff man added: “It was a real scrap out there. We didn’t start well but we showed great spirit to battle back from behind twice.
“We gave away two sloppy goals from our point of view but I was pleased, and a lot of the boys are pleased, that we showed such character.
“We didn’t show that at Man United or Spurs, so it was important for us to do that, and pick up another point.”
Of his goal – a header at the far post which was helped over the line by Crouch’s attempted clearance – Caulker said: “I’d like to claim it as mine, definitely. Hopefully, that’s me off the mark now.”
As for the Potters’ goals, the R’s defender explained: “(Victor) Moses and Crouch were a handful but I thought the first goal was a foul on Rio. With the second, it was sloppy from us. But we’re not pointing fingers at each other, we take that responsibility collectively as a team.”
Thankfully Kranjcar was able to secure a point with his stunning free-kick, and Caulker added: “It was an unbelievable goal from Niko, and such a relief when it went in. I celebrated like I’d scored it! The place just erupted and the fans were buzzing.
“Now I just urge the fans to stick with us. We are a new team and we’re gelling together, but don’t doubt us. We have got a lot of spirit in the dressing room and we’re confident we’re going to stay up this year.
“Hopefully we can build on this now and put in a strong performance at Southampton this weekend.”
