…..today we were waking up with a sore head but knowing that the impossible had happened and that goal from Bobby Zamaora had taken us to the promised land.
'We are QPR, a band of brothers committed to getting the Club back to the PL and this time staying there'.
There was TF parading around Wembley, Phil Beard with a smug smile and of course the players kissing the badge'.
Rewind a year and we are back where we started from suffering yet another humiliation. A 5-1 defeat against a side we had come up with.
With hindsight that goal that we cheered and got us very drunk was probably the worst thing that happened to the Club as it meant just 'more of the same' with 'no lessons learned'. Surely today we are in a worse position than we were 11 months and 364 days ago?
Harry initially was allowed to continue his ridiculous spending. What great buys Ferdinand and Sandro turned out to be and the team played football so dire that at times it was embarrassing. The world was able to tune in and see us not only humbled by Man U but to be humble to them. There was no spirit and no desire. There was no plan A let alone a plan B.
Weeks turned into months, the away performances became the joke of football as we headed towards records that no one wants. The coaching or whatever went on in training sessions didn't ever seem to make players any better. Players that had graced the world cup in Chile either weren't good enough for the team heading for relegation or were played out of position. In the end these very players were the 'bad apples' of the club that Barton tweeted about.
With few exceptions players seemed not to care or if they cared then they were too old and past it. Nice guys, but out of the depth against the forward line or virtually any other side in the Division.
The blame culture as always remained. It was always 'someone else's fault'. The reason we were spanked at home by the lowly Sheff U was that the players were tired. Too many games in too few days as opposed to Sheff U who hadn't played for 10 days. The referees were blamed, the pitch was blamed, the time of kick off was blamed.
The club in its wisdom sent the millionaires off to the playground of Dubai for some warm weather training. The results never improved. The team wasn't good enough, the manager didn't care, the owner was deluded into thinking that throwing money against something had to work. It seemed at times he was like a losing Vegas gambler always believing the next spin of the wheel would be his lucky number.
Harry left due to his dodgy knee (did anyone believe that story?) Beard went on his way, no players left as they were on such unbelievably good contracts that no none would have them. We appointed a manager I'd never heard of from within the ranks. Had we learned our lesson? Time will tell.
We did have a few away days where performances improved , Sunderland, West Brom and Villa but the 'fortress Loftus Road' was a figment of someones imagination and for every good away game there was Palace away.
Am I looking forward to the new season?
No I am not. I see a Club in free fall. It will be difficult to buy anyone of any stature and we invariably we will lose those players that have any value. How will we score goals without Austin? The management probably believe we have a rightful place in the Premiership, but we don't. The only way we will get there is being consistently better than 19 other clubs over the course of next season. Can you see it? I'm struggling.
We have continued to have been fed garbage this season by management and the PR spin makes the electioneering seem pale by comparison.
Still we always have the academy and new ground to look forward to. The 40,000 or is it 30,000 dream stadium. How many would we fill next season? 15,000 tops?
Before we can dare to dream about these nightmares, the Club has to remember that without a successful side, NOTHING will happen. Revenue from sponsors will dry up, although it remains stupid that we are sponsored in the main by Air Asia and Tune so not 'real' outside money. Air Asia's sponsorship of QPR from a marketing perspective is bonkers as the airline doesn't fly to the UK and without the global TV coverage off the PL the effectiveness of any campaign has got to be reduced in the Championship by 99%.
So 12 months on from that great Wembley day I've come to the conclusion that it would have been better for us to have lost the game.
A sad conclusion.
