DAVID BUSST won't pull on a Coventry shirt for at least another year following the horrific leg-break which stunned the nation last week.

But it was revealed last night how brave centre half Busst still played a big part in City's vital relegation victory against rivals QPR.

The Sky Blues were already built up for battle by boss Ron Atkinson before Busst flashed a message to the team from his Manchester hospital bed.

And that sent the troops over the top with even greater determination to win the fight.

Midfield warrior Kevin Richardson said: "We received a fax from Dave before the game today. Forgetting all his own problems, HE was wishing US all the best.

"Then when we ran out on to the pitch, we could hear the crowd singing Dave's name, which shows just how much they respect his courage.

"Without being too sentimental, this performance was for Dave. His message to us gave us all that little extra bit of inspiration."

With Kevin Gallen twice hitting the bar before Eoin Jess snatched City's golden goal after 70 minutes, big Ron's boys needed every weapon that they could lay their hands on to hold off an attacking Rangers side.

Jess was dropped from the previous two games, despite costing pounds 1.8 million from Aberdeen.

Chance

But he got another chance, as a second-half substitute, when David Rennie limped injured out of the action.

And the Scotland international grabbed his opportunity in an expert fashion.

He scored with a smart header after Dion Dublin nodded the ball back from Gordon Strachan's right-wing centre.

Jess confessed: "I've been here two months, and I never guessed I would have to wait so long for my first goal.

"In fact, it's three months since I last scored a goal - that was to earn Aberdeen a 1-1 draw against Rangers at Ibrox, so it was a great relief to score today. The manager explained why he had left me out of the side.

"He wanted to switch to a long-ball method because of the relegation pressure, and that doesn't suit my style.

"I accepted his reasons. The one thing which counts at the moment is ensuring that we stay in the Premiership.

"Perhaps it is going to be next season before I really achieve peak form for Coventry."

Atkinson commented: "Jess showed real quality. We need strong minds now, because despite this result we remain in the bottom three with plenty to do."

And despite the win, the problems continue to pile up for Big Ron.

Liam Daish's booking means that he will now be suspended from playing, together with Brian Borrows, from City's tough trip to Wimbledon in a fortnight.

Rennie is also ruled out due to recurrence of Achilles trouble.

And for Rangers star Andy Impey the season is already finished.

Sent off after 80 minutes for kicking Marcus Hall in retaliation, his two-match ban will cover the closing games of the season, against West Ham and Nottingham Forest.

Gallen, offside when he netted within a minute of Jess finally hitting the target, groaned: "What has happened to Andy sums up the way life is going for us.

"Nothing seems to be going right."

Pleased

And player-boss Ray Wilkins, who replaced Mark Hateley so Impey could switch to an attack role a mere three minutes before the red card, admitted: "I'm pleased that we have the next two weeks off.

"We should have won this one. My lot are flat on the floor and need some time to recover.

"We are next to bottom of the table, and only two wins from our last two games can save us now."

DEFIANT Ray Wilkins last night insisted QPR can still pull off a Houdini-style relegation escape act.

An Eoin Jess strike in the second half clinched a vital victory for basement rivals Coventry.

But Wilkins insists that six points from their matches with West Ham and Nottingham Forest could still be enough to stay up.

He said: "Who would have backed Southampton to beat Manchester United 3-1 when they were going for the championship?

"At this stage of the season, just about anything can happen and I really believe we can avoid going down if we win those final games.

"It was imperative that we got at least a point from Coventry but we didn't and just have to battle on. …
