Last friday I was unfortunate enough to attend a funeral. This was very liquid & a celebration of his life rather than a bereavement.
However, I took the chance to ask a serving PC, who used to be the Ipswich football liason officer, regarding pubs for our visit in January. This is providing anyone is still making the journey!
As we all know, the Station Hotel is where the police require away fans to drink but although this is fine with most supporters I would like to give you a couple of alternatives that he didn't think we would have trouble in accessing.
Firstly, if you are with family & looking to eat I give you a couple of options. Coming from the Cambridge direction on the A14 just prior to Ipswich turn off to the Sorrell Horse at Barham. The ground is then a 15-20 minute drive.
Coming from London or from Cambridge The Beagle is a possibility. Neither place are gastro pubs but the food & the ale are OK.
If you are a real ale drinker I would sugest that the pub to aim for is The Dove. This has fairly recently twice won either The Publicans or the Morning Advertiser real ale pub of the year. This is situated just outside the town centre on the other side to the football ground & you would be better off parking & walking the 15 minutes to the pub. Food is just basic, pies etc. but you are guarenteed a wide choice of ales.
The PC informed me that there should be no problem in the Dove wearing hoops but to be very careful walking through the town as Ipswich fans do not like us! At my age, of course, I don't see that as a problem!
Hope this is of help to any of you.

Looking out on my window we have a clear blue sky with a most unsual UFO shining in the sky!
A little bit on the chilly side but it looks perfect for playing football.
To those that are coming, have a good journey & see you in the ground.

Now back at home.
As you know I was dreading this game but we gave our best performance (IMO) since the Derby game.
Afer we weathered a couple of early scares we took control & were easily the better side. It was just a matter of if we could score.
YES WE DID. Three times, can you believe it?
Thank you MY TEAM. Not just for the win but for how we played. It will be nice for all of us R's living in Suffolk this week!

you know terry in all my years going to footie i never knew the Ipswich fans didn't like us, i thought they would like us as we don't like Narwich all that much ourselves, myself and a pal sat in the school end with Ipswich fans when to my bemusement all the tickets for the home stands were sold out by 1pm a few years ago and thought no probs its Ipswich not Millwall, and they were fine after we let the cat out of the bag and told those around us we were Rangers fans, when i say tell it was more forgetting we were in the away end and cheering on the r's at corner we won that gave the game away, but they were all good. even though i grew up in the bad old days of hooligans running amok, trouble only found me twice, Sheffield United fans set upon me and a couple of pals once, nothing to bad though other than a bruise the size of the fella's foot on the back of my leg, and believe it or not a Wimbledon fan smacked me right between the eyes for no reason back in the 80's. And if you live in Sudbury say hello to my aunt June for me

And if you live in Sudbury say hello to my aunt June for me It goes back many a year superhooper. Even back in the 60's the clubs didn't get on. The Cobbolds & Jim Gregory detested each other. I worked for Tolly Cobbold in those days & knew Mr. John & Mr. Patrick quite well, as well as some of the Ipswich players. The players didn't like the R's too much either. Ask Gerry Francis who was responsible for his back injury. There have been constant fights between the two sets of supporters since the early eighties which included a pitch invasion by Rangers fans at Portman Rosd. However, the current animosity is now ten years old when Ipswich reckon quite a lot of their girls they attacked in the Bush by Rangers males. Never mind, I will lap it up this week!
