London 24 - Briatore: My time at QPR was a ‘disaster’ but I stand by my manager sackings
Tuesday, April 23, 2013
Former QPR chairman Flavio Briatore has described his time at the helm of the Loftus Road outfit as a ‘disaster’
The Italian bought the Loftus Road outfit in 2007 and sold his stake in 2010.
His time in charge of the R’s was traumatic and managers came and went on a regular basis.
It was not a happy time for him away from football as the Renault F1 team had started to struggle and in 2008 Nelson Piquet Junior deliberately crashed at the Singapore Grand Prix to help his then team-mate Fernando Alonso win the race.
For this act he was banned from F1 for life, although that was overturned on appeal.
While the ban was in place the Football League wanted information as his ban may have placed him in breach of the ‘fit and proper persons’ test.
With all this controversy, the Italian decided to sell his stake in QPR to his original partner and F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone.
The Italian stepped back temporarily and, although Rangers reached the Premier League in 2011, in-fighting at boardroom level cast a shadow on that achievement.
In August 2011 Briatore sold the club to Tony Fernandes and has now admitted that he didn’t enjoy his time in English football.
“Not at all!” he told F1 Racing magazine. “It was a disaster.
“There was a lot of talk and people writing things that were wrong.
“We took QPR from the bottom of the championship. There was a four-year plan and we took them into the Premier League. I don’t understand the fuss. We did it with not much money.
“After Bernie and I went away leaving Mr Lakshmi Mittal and Mr Tony Fernandes to run the show and spend a lot of money, it’s funny to see they still have six or seven players who were with us in the championship.
“I believe we did it quite well but, I tell you, it was no fun at all.
“You need to treat football like a full-time job and not like an investor.
“There were too many people; the manager, the assistant manager and, awlways, you were dealing with the agents. In the end, we sold it.”
During Briatore’s first two-and-a-half years at Loftus Road, Rangers had six full-time managers and four caretakers.
After stepping down as chairman, the R’s brought in Neil Warnock as manager and he guided them to the Premier League.
But the Italian does not regret hiring and firing those managers.
“If you don’t fire these coaches, you never go up,” he explained. “When you understand someone is not good enough to do the job, it’s better you fire them immediately rather than waste another six months.
“I felt we were going nowhere with these guys. In the end, we made it. The most important thing in sport is the result.”

Former QPR co-owner Flavio Briatore has defended his running of the club and admitted he did not enjoy his time at Loftus Road.
And, speaking to F1 Racing magazine, he also defended his infamous hiring and firing of managers.
“If you don’t fire these coaches, you never go up,” he insisted.

The Italian believes his spell at the helm, which ended in promotion to the Premier League, should be regarded as a success.
