Today marks the 70th birthday of my first hero, the one and only Terry Venables. To me he symbolises the excitement and enjoyment of the good days at Loftus Road. I could not let this day pass without writing my tribute to the man who is the reason I support Q.P.R. Please click on this link when you have a few minutes to spare. rollercoasterranger.wordpress.com/2013/01/06/terry-venables-my-first-hero/Many thanks to the peerless Bushman for patiently furnishing me with facts, figures, dates and timelines.

He was in the Spurs team when I first started going to White Hart Lane but was unfairly compared with Danny Blanchflower, who he was supposed to have replaced.
One of a very small number of people who both played for and managed Tottenham Hotspur & Queens Park Rangers.

The year we won the second division under Tel we were so much better than any other team, it wasn't even close.

I love old Terry Venables, how could we not, and as for naffing off to Barca, well you cant blame him for that, i would never stop a player or manager joining them, go to the camp nou, look around lone, then picture little old loftus road, you'll soon understand why he naffed off to Barcelona. T.V will always be a legend to me. And just add nice write up roller

TV is revered in Barcelona and the older fans know who started the Barca footballing way that has remained ever since.
Football genius. Used to love watching to see what on earth we would do each time we got a free kick! ;D

Thank you Roller. A superb read.
I was there when we scored from that free kick, but like you I can't remember who we were playing.
The next morning I insisted on carrying out the same routine & I lifted the ball over the wall perfectly & we scored.
That was the only time in my life I managed to execute it correctly!
I think we may agree on the order of previous Rangers teams - 1) 75-76, 2) 72-74, 3) 82-84
We are so lucky to have seen all three teams!

Excellent read Roller - in my books he was second only to Alec Stock as QPR's greatest ever coach. The team he built up in the early 80's is till my favourite QPR team of all time - and fits easily into the top 3 QPR squads of all time. I also put him as one of football's visionaries - willing to look ahead and embrace change.
As for Mullery - what a total and utter tosser. A great coach would have gleefully accepted what had been handed over to him and built on it (as Sexton did when he took over from Jago), but this insecure prick broke up in less than 6 months what had taken 4 years to build. A collossal waste.

I remember Dave Butler well, he came out to NZ with the team as Tel was in negotiations with Barca and Allan Harris was running the team. If El Tel had arrived at the club instead of Docherty, QPR may well have had a decent Kiwi player on their books in 1980.
Clive Allen and Paul Goddard should never have been sold on any occassion - Fact!!

Here is footage of the free kick I describe (15 mins in) www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzH2qoI0U_MNot the actual occasion if my fading memory serves me right, but still magnificent. Can we have one of these on Saturday please? Located by MacMoish (I assume) some time ago

Located by MacMoish (I assume) some time ago Yes Loved the Venables free kicks As I recall, when Bobby Campbell was POACHED by SLIME ARSENAL in 73/74, there was talk of Venables (& McClintock becoming player coaches - something VEnables already de facto was) Shocking that Gregory/Jago sold him... Disappointing that he didnt want to return as player when Sexton made a bid

I think the Donkey Kick (which was subsequently banned!) was unrelated - and actually preceded TV/G-D
