Birmingham Mail
Gianni Paladini and Flavio Briatore head consortium interested in buying Birmingham City by Colin Tattum Sep 11 2012 Solihull businessman Gianni Paladini is heading a consortium keen on taking control of Birmingham City from Carson Yeung. Paladini and former Formula One motor racing chief Flavio Briatore are considering making an offer for the club. Paladini, who made his name as a football agent and has worked closely with Blues in the past, left QPR after eight years in 2011. His friend and fellow Italian Briatore ended his three-year stay at Loftus Road in 2010. Briatore became part-owner of QPR with Bernie Ecclestone in 2007, with Paladini playing the lead role in bringing him forward. Yeung is prepared to sell up after Blues parent company Birmingham International Holdings Limited (BIHL) plunged into financial crisis in the run up to, and after, Premier League relegation. And although there are other interested yet undisclosed parties on the scene hovering, there have been no signs of any deals being struck. The Paladini-Briatore combination is the first to come to the fore, however. Yeung's court case to answer charges of alleged money laundering starts in Hong Kong at the end of November. With this hanging over him - a very real threat of a lengthy prison sentence - and the parlous state of BIHL, there is no way Yeung can expect to recover the £81.5 million he paid to replace David Sullivan and the Gold brothers at the Blues helm in 2009. It is more likely that those interested would be prepared to at least allow Yeung to recoup the £13.7 million loan he has put into Blues, plus a £7.8 million BIHL loan - Yeung is the largest single shareholder in BIHL. Or alternatively they could play a waiting game and see just what happens in court, and whether Yeung and BIHL's situation worsens to such a degree that he has no option but to move aside. www.birminghammail.net/birmingham-sport/birmingham-city-fc/birmingham-city-fc-news/2012/09/11/gianni-paladini-and-flavio-briatore-head-consortium-interested-in-buying-birmingham-city-97319-31811007/#ixzz26ElqXW8lBirmingham Mail

Birmingham City fans have given a guarded response to the revelation that Italian businessmen Flavio Briatore and Gianni Paladini had bid for their club.Edward Cunynghame tweeted: “New owners at Birmingham would be nice. Paladini-Briatore combination sounds ideal.” Bhamiswarks posted on the Mail’s webpage: “Good news. We have interested parties and from the looks of it, rich interested parties. Excellent.” Beaublue added: “They are all multi-millionaires, very clever business people and certainly won’t jump into buying our beloved club. The interest from a local successful businessman is great news, let’s hope more materialise over the coming weeks!” However, not everyone was overjoyed. Supporter Paul Craddock stated on Twitter: “Good to see that someone is interested in B’ham City, but Paladini & Briatore past owners of QPR doesn’t fill me with joy.” Sam Lucas posted: “Paladini and Briatore interest in BCFC is very worrying. On BBC programme about QPR they interfered in team and showed disregard for fans.” His views were echoed by Granty@KeepRightOn. He said: “Everyone moans about Carson (deservedly so) but I’d rather have him than Gianni Paladini & Flavio Briatore. Look what they did at QPR.” Nick Xydias added: “We need proper footy people to take over.” Read More www.birminghammail.net/news/top-stories/2012/09/12/flavio-briatore-and-gianni-paladini-birmingham-city-fans-are-split-on-italians-97319-31817824/#ixzz26ElgURndwww.birminghammail.net/news/top-stories/2012/09/12/flavio-briatore-and-gianni-paladini-birmingham-city-fans-are-split-on-italians-97319-31817824/

Birmingham Mail
The big Birmingham City story: Carson Yeung wants at least £40m for Blues by Colin Tattum, Birmingham MailSep 12 2012CARSON Yeung is looking to recoup at least half of the £81.5 million he spent purchasing Birmingham City. But interested parties in the club – with the Gianni Paladini-Flavio Briatore consortium the first to emerge – rate Blue’s value a lot less. And for this reason any change in ownership at St Andrew’s could become a drawn-out affair, unless the financial situation of parent company Birmingham International Holdings Limited (BIHL) continues to deteriorate, and rapidly. Paladini, the Solihull businessman who helped saved QPR from extinction, and his friend and fellow Italian Briatore, the ex-Formula One chief, tabled an offer of around £12 million. But it was dismissed out of hand by Yeung and acting chairman Peter Pannu, who has been sourcing new investment or new owners for several months. Yeung believes he could get around £40 million or so for Blues – but that figure looks unrealistic given the current state of affairs. Any prospective buyer would not go that high in the knowledge that Yeung could well be backed into a corner soon. He faces trial at the end of November on charges of £59 million worth of alleged money laundering. And there are other court cases on the go in relation to non-payment of loans that could see Yeung lose his luxury home on Hong Kong’s prestigious Peak. BIHL have yet to produce their accounts for 2011 and it is difficult to fathom how the firm could improve the current parlous standing. Those hovering in the wings could well think that the best course of action would be to wait and see if BIHL was about to go under. The Paladini-Briatore combination is not the only party keen on Blues. It is understood that there is also serious interest from Asia and the Far East. Paladini-Briatore are the first group to emerge and come to the fore but their chances of succeeding with a takeover bid, at this early stage, seem to be slim. The identities of other potential buyers have not been disclosed. Confidentiality is always a key component in such cases. But there have been talks with and representations made to Blues’ hierarchy in recent months. Yeung is BIHL’s single biggest shareholder, with 26 per cent. He put a £13.7 million loan into Blues, plus there is an outstanding loan of £7.8 million to BIHL. Sources who have followed the Blues saga believe it would make sense for him to accept an offer that would cover these outlays as a best case scenario. But Yeung is holding out for significantly more. Paladini, who is from Naples, has lived in Solihull since the 1960s. He made a name for himself as a football agent, helping to deliver the likes of Fabrizio Ravanelli to Middlesbrough. He also acted as a go-between for Blues on their Anglo-Italian jaunts in the mid-1990s and is a well-known figure to those on the local football scene. Paladini was at QPR for eight years. In 2003 he helped secure vital funds for the club to keep them afloat and helped pave the way for Briatore’s takeover, who linked up with Bernie Ecclestone, in 2007. He became chairman and stayed in the post until Tony Fernandes took command at Loftus Road. He left the club soon after, in November 2011. www.birminghammail.net/birmingham-sport/birmingham-city-fc/birmingham-city-fc-news/2012/09/12/the-big-birmingham-city-story-carson-yeung-wants-at-least-40m-for-blues-97319-31816735/#ixzz26EzL51ym

And the picture! BBC Birmingham City: Gianni Paladini involved in consortiumFormer QPR chairman Gianni Paladini has confirmed to BBC WM that he is involved in a consortium interested in buying Birmingham City for £25m. The Italian, who is based in Solihull, left the R's by mutual consent in 2011 after eight years at Loftus Road. He said former QPR owner and Renault motor racing boss Flavio Briatore was "categorically" not associated with it. “I took QPR when they were in the Second Division and we got promoted without spending a fortune and at the end the job was done. QPR are now in the Premier Leagueâ€Gianni Paladini Paladini said he would not be coming in promising to invest large amounts of money into the squad. "If you know what you're doing, you don't need to go and spend £10m on a player that then doesn't solve your problem," he said.
"In this division, the Championship, you need to have a player that they can fit in this type of league.goo.gl/2ZPdP"I think we did a great job [at QPR]. "The most important thing is that I took QPR when they were in the Second Division and we got promoted without spending a fortune and at the end the job was done. QPR are now in the Premier League. "I took QPR in 2001-02 when they were in administration, more or less. I bought the club myself. We went from strength to strength." Birmingham City, who are currently owned by Hong Kong businessman Carson Yeung, have refused to comment on the takeover claims. And Paladini added: "I cannot really say too much because everything is in the hand of the lawyer." Asked about other members of the consortium, he said: "Even if I mention the name, you will [not] know them anyway because most of them are Italian anyway. They all live in Italy." He said he had been in the Birmingham area since coming to England at the age of 22.

Sources have told Goal.com that the flamboyant ex-Formula One boss and former Rangers chairman Gianni Paladini are keen on investing in Birmingham but have not yet made formal contact with the club. Birmingham majority owner Carson Yeung, who led the consortium that bought the Midlands-based club for £81.5 million, is keen to sell after a troubled three-year spell at the helm. BIRMINGHAM LATEST v Despite winning the 2011 Carling Cup, Birmingham have been dogged by cash-flow problems and were landed with a transfer embargo last season after failing to file their accounts on time following relegation from the Premier League. Paladini, who left QPR last summer soon after Tony Fernandes bought the west London club, admitted his involvement in the takeover bid on Wednesday but publicly denied that Briatore is involved. However, it is understood that Briatore wants a dramatic return to English football 12 months after selling his stake in QPR and is testing the temperature among Birmingham supporters before formally showing his hand. Paladini was Briatore’s close ally during his controversial four-year spell as co-owner of QPR with billionaire Bernie Ecclestone. Solihull-based Paladini formally left QPR three months after Briatore and Ecclestone sold their majority stake in the club last year to Malaysian businessman Tony Fernandes. The Italian helped broker Briatore and Ecclestone’s Rangers takeover but is not believed to have the funds required to take over a club of Birmingham's standing.

But the Italian insists, contrary to reports, that Flavio Briatore is not involved. Paladini, a close friend of former QPR owner Briatore, yesterday claimed the offer tabled was considerably more than the £12m reportedly rejected by Birmingham's board. Birmingham have made no official comment on the matter. Paladini said: "I am involved in a consortium and the bid is not £12m, it's much, much more than that. Unfortunately, I can't really say too much because everything is in the hands of the lawyers. Yes, we've made an approach. But I'd like to make a point that Flavio Briatore is not involved in this venture." Asked about the wealthy members of the consortium, Paladini replied: "Even if I mentioned the names you wouldn't know them anyway because most of them are Italian, they all live in Italy." "I'm a Birmingham boy myself," Paladini added. "I've always liked Blues and I've got a good relationship with a lot of Zulu Warriors [City's hooligan element] – if they're still there I don't know, because I've been at QPR for a number of years."
