I like the sound of that, and got me to wandering where the name came from, as it is an odd term for a football club.
Since it came from the merger of St Judes and Christchurch Rangers I guess we need to look at the history of Christchurch Rangers to see when they adopted the name, but I can't find anything. Harlow, do you have anything on them? Glasgow Rangers came into being in 1872 and named themselves after an English ruby club, but again, I cannot find out which rugby club. Did this pre-date Christchurch, or did Christchurch get their name from Glasgow Rangers.
Not much to do with the thread, but I was just interested.

As early as 1870 there has been at least one Rugby Union team in Swindon. The earliest reference is in the Swindon Evening Advertiser and refers to a match played on 26th November 1870 between Swindon Rangers and Highworth on some land loaned to the Rangers by a Mr. J Brunsden in Gorse Hill.

As early as that Bushman , my grandad used to go mid thirties , and i know in the 70's he still referred that name to me in general conversation , like we would with The Hoops or Rangers or the R's now. thankyou

Which is exactly who Glasgow Rangers are named after: "The young fellows unanimously adopted the name 'Rangers' for their new team, after Moses McNeil related that he had been reading Charles W Alcocks 'English Football Annual' and was drawn to the name of an English Rugby team of the era, 'Swindon Rangers', who's kit was white socks, white shorts and white shirts with a blue star on the breast, much like that of the Rangers 1876/77 Scottish Cup Final team." www.rangerspedia.org/index.php/McNeil,_Moses Chances are, then, we might have ultimately gotten our name from them. Nice find, Bushman. Cheers.

I've always tended to say "the Rangers" rather than just "Rangers". "I'm going to the Rangers today", "My whole family supports the Rangers", "See you at the Rangers" etc. etc. It's just how I was brung up.

Likewise, since I was a kid in the seventies I can remember me dad and grandad referrring to 'the rangers' I thought everyone did ?

I've always said Rangers or Queens Park Rangers. I will never call MY TEAM just QPR.
Back to the OP, if anyone mentions Rangers or The Rangers I assume they mean us. I know that other team as Glasgow Rangers & this really annoys their followers!

"I'm off down the Rangers now". A part of my life, we are THE RANGERS. hello, hello, we are the rangers boys, hello, hello etc. Suprised that london says QPR, we are the Rangers.

Likewise, since I was a kid in the seventies I can remember me dad and grandad referrring to 'the rangers' I thought everyone did ? I've called my team all sorts of things over the years, including both "Rangers" and "The Rangers", it really depends on how it fits the sentence.
