South Yorkshire Times * You are here * Sport * > * Football * > * Barnsley Barnsley vs Queens Park Rangers Published on Monday 11 April 2011 05:09 Oakwell, April 12, 7.45pm FEW would have expected QPR to maintain their push for the Premier League so strong for so long but there seems little chance their march to the title will be halted. Neil Warnock has proved inspirational leader to a strong squad of Championship-level talent, turning underachievers into success stories. Star player Adel Taarabt praises Warnock for putting him on the right path, and he has done the same with Rangers also, losing just three games on the road. MANAGER FEW managers draw as much controversy and bile from supporters and peers as Neil Warnock. But it is hard to argue he has been one of the most successful in the Football League’s recent history. While Rangers have been blessed with strong finances for several years now, no manager has been able to craft a winning formula from that until now. Should Rangers go up, former Rotherham and Barnsley winger Warnock will have the distinction of taking three different clubs into the top flight after promotions with Notts County and Sheffield United. www.southyorkshiretimes.co.uk/sport/football/barnsley/barnsley_vs_queens_park_rangers_1_3257556

And season opener BBC QPR 4-0 Barnsley QPR 4 - 0 Barnsley QPR started the new season in style as they hammered Barnsley and gave notice of their promotion intentions. Heidar Helguson's penalty sent them on their way, although Barnsley hit the post through Adam Hammill and Jason Shackell, before Jamie Mackie's tap in. Barnsley conceded another penalty when Shackell fouled Helguson and this time Adel Taarabt scored the spot-kick. The rout was complete when Hogan Ephraim laid on a tap-in for Rangers skipper Fitz Hall. The result was the perfect way for Neil Warnock's side to begin justifying their tag as one of the clubs tipped for promotion. And with the impressive Taarabt in their ranks - the former Tottenham midfielder ran Barnsley ragged - their ambition could come to fruition. The 21-year-old forced keeper Luke Steele into two fine saves before one of his jinking runs ended with Stephen Foster fouling him inside the area. Helguson's penalty was cool, placed low into the corner, giving Rangers a deserved lead. The Tykes should have forced a leveller just before the break when Rangers keeper Paddy Kenny spilled a routine catch but Shackell's header came back off the post. Barnsley were frustrated again seconds after the re-start with Hammill's shot coming back off the upright and Rangers made him pay for his wastefulness minutes later. 606: DEBATE Can QPR win promotion? Alejandro Faurlin and Ephraim combined to set up Mackie, who made no mistake in front of goal with a predatory finish. Taarabt then grabbed a deserved goal for his performance, albeit from the penalty spot. Helguson also later struck the post for QPR before the scoring was completed when Hall struck from close range late on. BBC Barnsley v QPR Jason Shackell has recovered from illness and is expected to go straight back into Barnsley's starting line-up. Bobby Hassell remains sidelined with a calf strain, while Hugo Colace is expected to miss out after being forced off at the weekend with a knee injury. QPR forward Adel Taarabt, who has been complaining of an abdominal problem, is expected to return. Heidar Helguson and Kaspars Gorkss are also likely to be recalled at the expense of Rob Hulse and Dan Shittu. MATCH PREVIEWQPR's shock 4-1 thrashing at struggling Sc**thorpe on Saturday was only the fifth league defeat suffered by the Championship leaders this season. It also made a mockery of their excellent defensive record. They will be looking to atone for that debacle by getting back to winning ways against a Barnsley side that will be full of confidence after beating Bristol City 4-2. Rangers have been a bogey side for the Tykes, who have lost the last three matches between these clubs and eight of the last 12 - although only one of those defeats was at Oakwell. Barnsley have struggled against the division's leading sides this season. They have taken a mere two points from nine matches against teams currently in the top five. MATCH FACTSHead-to-head •QPR have won 23 and Barnsley 14 of the 47 previous matches between these clubs. Barnsley •A win for Barnsley would see them become the first team in the bottom half of the Championship to win 11 home games this season. •Eighteen players have netted league goals for the Tykes this term. No second-tier side has a longer goalscorers list. QPR •QPR have won 13 of their 16 matches against teams currently in the bottom nine. •Another win would leave them with an unrivalled 23 Championship victories this season, and complete their ninth league 'double' of the campaign. •A goal for Tommy Smith would be the 100th of his career. news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/12968169.stm

Upbeat Reds in mood for revenge over Rs Tough game: But Barnsley are determined to finish on a high, says Matt Hill. By Neil Goulding CONFIDENT Barnsley go into tonight’s home clash with Championship league leaders Queen’s Park Rangers with a spring in their step. Saturday’s fine 4-2 home win over Bristol City saw the Reds reach 50 points for the season and, barring a drastic run in their remaining six games, the club’s status in the second tier of English football should be secured for a fifth consecutive year. But Oakwell boss Mark Robins does have injury concerns ahead of the Rs’ visit to South Yorkshire with midfielder Hugo Colace, centre-back Jason Shackell and full-back Bobby Hassell all doubts. Colace was forced off with a leg injury after just 24 minutes of the weekend’s win over the Robins, while club skipper Shackell missed out due to illness. Shackell should be fit to return to the side with either Stephen Foster and Paul McShane expected to make way in the centre of defence. If for any reason he doesn’t make it back then midfielder Nathan Doyle is once again expected to captain the side. Full-back Hassell is unlikely to play with an ankle ligament injury and a re-occurrence of his left calf injury, although he could return in time for Saturday’s away clash with Middlesbrough. And Robins and his side will want a measure of revenge tonight after Neil Warnock’s team thumped them 4-0 at Loftus Road on the opening day of the season. QPR are nine points clear at the top of the division and know a few more victories would secure the title and promotion to the Premier League. However, having reached 50 points and relative safety it’s no wonder the Reds are looking to kick-on and finish the season as strongly as possible to better a previous high finish of 18th in the past four league campaigns. “It’s massive hitting the 50-point mark, that’s the aim that every club has before the season,” revealed Reds defender Matt Hill. “The quicker you get there, then the more you can look at what else is out there [to achieve]. “We can relax a little, but still kick on and hopefully try and get the right results towards the end of the season. “We want to finish on a high. We’ve got a tough game tonight, but we want to keep this momentum and finish on a good note. “We know it’s going to be very difficult right towards the end of the season, but we’re willing to go all the way because players are playing for their future. It’s important we’re doing well.” And Hill believes Saturday’s win over his former club is just what the Reds needed having previously not won in their last three matches prior to that fixture. “That [win] was the momentum we needed to kick on,” stressed Hill. www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/barnsley/upbeat_reds_in_mood_for_revenge_over_rs_1_3277235

Evening Standard Neil Warnock sure QPR will bounce back from 'freak' Sc**thorpe defeat 12 Apr 2011 QPR boss Neil Warnock is sure his side will bounce back from their "freak" defeat to the npower Championship's bottom club Sc**thorpe when they take on Barnsley tonight. Rangers remain nine points clear at the top despite being on the end of one of the shock results of the season when they were hammered 4-1 by the struggling Iron on Saturday. Having remained in Yorkshire since that loss, Warnock is confident his squad, which should be boosted by the return of playmaker and captain Adel Taarabt, can return to winning ways. "You are going to get the odd freak result, we just have to get over it and get on with the Barnsley game," he said. "It's always tough at Oakwell, just like it's tough at Sc**thorpe. That what makes the league what it is. We've got to make it tough for Barnsley. "It's about how we bounce back and we've always bounced back quite well." www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard-sport/football/article-23940578-neil-warnock-sure-qpr-will-bounce-back-from-freak-sc**thorpe-defeat.do
