VERy, VERY SICK AND ANGRY live4liverpool.com/2011/02/view-from-the-kop/five-star-raheem-is-beginning-to-excite-a-lot-of-peopleBest All Time XI Legends Match Reports Other Remember a Day View from the Kop FIVE Star Raheem is beginning to excite a lot of peoplePosted on Tuesday, 15th February 2011 by David Tully ShareA lot of plaudits have gone the way of 16 year old Raheem Sterling today after his five goals against Southend, and although the comparisons to John Barnes are way too premature, there are certain things about the Liverpool winger’s style of play that have really caught the eye and excited some people who don’t normally get sucked in by the tag of “A Star in the Making.” His performance in the 9-0 win in the FA Youth Cup has got many people chatting about what the future may hold for the player. Liverpool did exceptionally well to fight off the interest of Manchester United, Man City, Fulham and Arsenal when they signed the player in February last year. In a sizeable £300,000 four year deal, the Reds hoped they had got one of the most exciting prospects in the country, and his display last night would have gone a long way in justifying the investment in him. The deal would have put a lot of pressure on the 15 year old but he is a man who seems to take most things in his stride. According to QPR head of development Steve Gallen, Sterling lives and breathes football: “He’s not interested in all the stuff around him – whether it’s in the street, the car park or wherever; he just wants to play football all the time” The former QPR player was born in Jamaica but has played in many of England’s youth teams. He joined Rangers at 10 years old, and at 15 some coaches said that Sterling was at the same level as Wayne Rooney was in his development at the same age, but more widely held comparisons have been made with Theo Walcott. A fast, pacey attacking midfield player who can “pass, shoot, head, score goals, tackle, defend” according to Steve Gallen, Sterling no doubt has tremendous prospects and it certainly shows that the policy of bringing in expensive young talent from other clubs is on the way to working. It is definitely not the time to get ahead of ourselves though. The fifth round of the FA Youth Cup is the furthest that Southend have ever got in their history and the class of the Reds players shone through last night. The attributes that Sterling possesses though are what impresses many. He has incredible pace, great dribbling ability, he has an eye for a goal and has the ability to use his left as well as his right foot to keep opposition full backs guessing as to whether he will cut inside to shoot or go out wide to put a cross into the box. Such natural ability cannot be coached, and harnessed in the right way, Sterling really has a great chance of making it at the top level. Certainly with the experience of Rodolfo Borrell, the winger has more than a fighting chance. His second and fourth goals (shown in the video below, thanks to MilanKakaBaros) demonstrate his devastating speed and directness. He ghost pasts two Southend defenders after cutting in from the left to finish with aplomb for his second while his fourth is similar, taking advantage of a tired defence to go past the opposition as if it they weren’t even there to slot home the team’s seventh of the game. He is still probably a couple of years away from the first team. At 16, his body is yet to develop fully and his slight build is the only slight concern about him. His speed, step-overs, dribbling ability and shooting accuracy all point to an exciting future though and we will no doubt be hearing a lot more in the years to come. It could even be sooner than some imagine too as he has been given the ’31’ jersey indicating he his in the thoughts of manager Dalglish. Kenny, Damien Comolli, Steve Clarke and Sammy Lee were all at the match yesterday. Perhaps a spot on the bench for a future Europa League match this season? You never know, but this 16 year old is really one to watch.

Superkid Sterling set to make Liverpool history Published 23:00 15/02/11 By Alan Nixon
Liverpool boy-wonder Raheem Sterling is being given a dream ticket to join Kenny Dalglish’s Europa League squad – at the tender age of 16.
The teenage sensation has been rewarded for a stunning five-goal display in the FA Youth Cup with a place on the plane for tomorrow’s tie at Sparta Prague.
Attacking midfielder Sterling could be on the bench, and if he came on he would become the youngest player to ever appear for Liverpool.
The record is held by defender Jack Robinson, who made his debut at 16 years and 250 days against Hull last May.
Sterling will be just 16 years and 79 days old tomorrow.

If I was assured that there was absolutely nothing QPR could have done to keep him; that there was no error we committed in not giving him a contract, etc. OK. So convince me

It would not have mattred if it was us,Bolton,Wolves or Accrington Stanley who had Sterling as a youth player because quite simply the bigger clubs will always take advantage of the rules which protect young players
The one thing that does seem to be forgotten in all this though is that I am sure we were going to be offered a couple of Liverpool reserves if we wanted them but it has all gone a bit quiet on that front

"Take advatage" being the two most important words. And what punishment do the big clubs get for doing so? I reckon if a player under 18 is at a particular club then they should not be allowed to be tapped up, sold or traded up until the age of 18 so that they have time to develop and progress at a rate more condusive. it also stops young players like Raheem from getting shit loads of uneeded pressure put on their should and it can keep those W*nker agents at bay too.

What puzzles me: How come Southampton can hold on and develop their youth and THEN sell then for ten million? Or Ipswich with Wickham?
If we were entitled to a a 300,000 or 500,000 (plus later payments), why not more? And what if we refused to sell/accept the proffered amount?

It was one of those mad situations where because of his age it would not have mattered who was in charge because the bottom line is that Liverpool or any other club in the land could have taken him for diddly squat Whatever we were compensated for him and the amount is debatable is a lot more then the £0 we were entitled to get

MIRROR
10 things you need to know about Raheem Sterling plus video of him in actionSuperkid Raheem Sterling could make history tonight if he comes off the bench in Liverpool's Europa League match with Sparta Prague. At just 16 years and 79 days he would become the Reds youngest ever first team player. So just who is this precocious talent? Read on for the 10 things you need to know about the former QPR starlet... 1. He was born in Harlesden in North London in December 1993. 2. He joined Queens Park Rangers aged just 10-years-old. 3. A lightening-quick striker with good all-round ability, he has already been compared to Theo Walcott, while some coaches rate him as highly as Wayne Rooney at the same age. 4. QPR's head of development Steve Gallen said of his young protege: "He has loads of natural ability. This boy can pass, shoot, head it, score goals, tackle, defend, anything." 5. When he was just 14-years-old, Sterling was already a regular in QPR's under-18 side and even scored on his debut for the team. 6. He has also already played for England having made his debut for the Under-16 side in 2009 in the Sky Sports Victory Shield against Northern Ireland at Chester City's Deva Stadium. He came on late in the first half and provided the assist for Matthias Fanimo to score England's second in a 2-0 win. 7. Before Liverpool swooped for him, a host of other Premier League sides were jostling for his signature including Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Fulham. But it was the Reds who got there first, signing him for an initial £600,000 in early 2010 after the club wooed him by taking him and his agent as VIP guests at Anfield for a Liverpool vs Manchester United match. 8. He made a great start to his Anfield career by scoring on his debut for the Under 18s against city rivals Everton in a thrilling game when Liverpool's youngsters came from two down to eventually beat the Blues 4-3. 9. His academy boss was quick to praise the youngster. "I was pleased with Raheem's contribution and that he scored on his debut,' said Rodolfo Borrell, the former Barcelona coach. "He is quick and skilful but still only young. He can improve tactically and has a long way to go, but he is a great signing for this football club." 10. Sterling has earned his place in the first team squad for Europa League tie against Sparta Prague after impressing Reds boss Kenny Dalglish in a 9-0 win over Southend in the FA Youth Cup on Monday, in which he grabbed five goals. Check out this video to see his silky skill Read more: www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/opinion/blogs/mirror-football-blog/Liverpool-starlet-Raheem-Sterling-10-things-you-need-to-know-about-the-wonder-kid-from-QPR-plus-video-of-him-in-action-article217597.html#ixzz1E7yAsasc

Youth players register for two years on the odd years so at 15 he could move to wherever he liked once he registration ran out. If we did get money for him all well and good, otherwise we would have had to fight for compensation.
Don't forget, teams cannot poach players outside their catchment area so we must assume the Sterling's were happy to move to Merseyside.

Dalglish wary of Sterling 'superkid' hype 16/02/11 By David Maddock
Kenny Dalglish has tried to cut the hype surrounding teenage sensation Raheem Sterling, by pleading: 'Don't ruin his career before it's started'.
The 16-year-old will become Liverpool's youngest ever player if he is given a taste of the action from the bench against Sparta Prague this evening.
There is already a massive buzz surrounding the player, who the club bought last season for a minimum £2million fee at the age of 15 from QPR.
The England Under-19 international scored five goals in the FA Youth Cup against Southend on Monday and was immediately placed in the Europa League squad to travel to Prague, but his manager insisted:
"We have to be realistic about this. It would do everybody a favour if it was a bit realistic. We don't want to spoil a fairytale of a story, but we don't want to spoil a young boy's career either.
"Raheem can handle it. We can handle it. The only thing we have to manage is the expectation of everyone else, but we can do that. You have to be very, very responsible when you are talking about him.
"I think common sense can prevail a little bit, and if it does I think he and the rest of the boys from the youth team can have a better chance."
Jack Robinson, who is also in the Reds' squad for this one, currently holds the record as the club's youngest player after appearing against Hull last May at the age of 16 years and 250 days.
Sterling, who is likely to be on the bench, will be 16 years and 79 days old if he gets on.
Dalglish joked last night after the hype about the midfielder's youthful promise:
"We have a baby-sitter tonight waiting for him when he gets back from training, and we'll make sure he does his homework before he gets to sleep, so we'll make sure he doesn't miss any of his school education!
"It's fantastic for Raheem to be involved, as it is for the three other lads. For the four lads from the youth team, it will be a great occasion. We want them to be part and parcel of the football club, and they are there because they deserve to be."

GIVE HIM BACK DAILY MAIL Boy wonder Sterling has cast a spell on Dalglish at Liverpool By Matt Barlow and Dominic King 17th February 2011 Born in the Caribbean and raised in the shadow of Wembley Stadium, prepare to be dazzled by Raheem Sterling. Kenny Dalglish is already converted, barely able to wipe the grin from his face as he watched the striker score five for Liverpool in the FA Youth Cup on Monday. 'Made of granite': Sterling celebrates on Monday For added resonance, the schoolboy wore the iconic No 7 shirt as he played the leading role in the 9-0 destruction of Southend at Anfield. His reward was instant promotion to Dalglish's first-team squad for tonight's Europa League tie against Sparta Prague and, if he appears, Sterling will be the youngest ever player in the history of the club at 16 years and 71 days. If he doesn't, take time to watch his five-goal exhibition of thrilling pace, close control and clinical finishing (see below). None of which come as a shock to anyone at Queens Park Rangers, where he played his football until last year. Steve Gallen, QPR's head of youth development, tuned into Liverpool TV on Monday night. It conjured mixed emotions but no surprise. 'We always knew he was good,' said Gallen. 'He had many nicknames when he played for us. One of them was simply "The Magician". Another was "Raheem Park Rangers" because sometimes he would carry the team on his own.'I moved him up to the Under 16s when he was 14 and he was the best player on the pitch. He came on as a sub against Millwall and there was this long ball from the goalkeeper. He watched it drop over his shoulder and volleyed it straight into the top corner. I was glad no scouts were there that day.
'This became normal. His ability is frightening. Balance, speed, awareness. No-one I've ever seen compares to him. He's a fantastic player and I really hope he does well.'He was always small for his age but at 14, Sterling was fast-tracked by QPR into the Under 18 squad for a tour of Germany and came on as a substitute in one game, to the general amusement of the home crowd.'Everyone was saying, "Look at this little boy they're bringing on", but it was comedy,' recalled Gallen. 'He absolutely ran rings round them. A 14-year-old street player from Harlesden.' Sterling left Jamaica for north-west London at an early age, where his mother Nadine raised her four children in their small flat while working long hours as a nurse. He went to Copland School in Wembley, with a view of the stadium from the sports fields, but, by the age of 14, QPR were taking him out of school every Tuesday to train with their first team. 'He had a tough upbringing in an area with its distractions and maybe that will help his mentality,' said Gallen. 'Off the pitch, he's a placid, lovely kid but he has desire inside that you only notice on the pitch. 'I've seen England Under 16 kids walking around like they own the country but not this boy. He's too focused on winning. I've seen him get smashed by some giants and he gets up and carries on. No histrionics. He's small but made of granite.' Gallen speaks with great affection for the youngster, who moved to Liverpool last year for an initial fee of £500,000, with more to follow in add-ons, depending on his success, and a healthy sell-on clause if he leaves Anfield.Dalglish was working in his academy role when he arrived, able to devote time to develop a player who could prove an important part of his first team if the temporary manager extends his reign beyond the end of the season as expected. 'We did everything we could to keep him,' said Gallen. 'It broke my heart to lose him but I think his advisers realised there was money to be made. I had sleepless nights over it. I'm sure someone at the club was happy with the cheque but not me.'In the end, the kid came and said he wanted to leave. I realised we'd lost him and had to make sure he went to the best club.' Al though there were rumours about other clubs, Gallen insists Liverpool and Fulham were the only two that tabled offers. Sterling moved to Merseyside, and joined Rainhill High School, in St Helens.A fearless appearance in a pre-season friendly against Borussia Monchengladbach convinced Liverpool's firstteam players that academy director Frank McParland had lured a talent to the club. And Monday's display will have only enhanced that feeling. www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1357850/Raheem-Sterlings-goals-Liverpool-v-Southend--video.html#ixzz1ECVzKJrW

I was just reading that on the train on the way to work this morning. Some good stuff from SG in there. Will be watching the game tonight, hoping to get a look at our young superstar. If we do get £5,000,000 for him I will still be pretty p***** off to think of what we could have made had we only been able to hold onto him for a couple of years. As has been mentioned, amazing that Ipswich and Southampton managed to hold onto their starlets for so long (Perhaps the scouts didn't feel like going the extra mile to the South Coast and Suffolk or perhaps they have owners who can see further than a quick buck....) Who knows? Knowing QPR we certainly never will............

If a young player doesn't want to stay there's very little you can do. If we do get a total of 5.5 mill from him we will have done very well. However, the real question is, will that money be invested in getting the CoE to Academy status? I very much doubt it as it will simply be swallowed by the debt.
Wasn't Sterling a closet tea leaf fan anyway?
