Aidy Boothroyd planning to go on the attack against QPRBy Andy Turner
Jan 20 2011
AIDY Boothroyd has revealed that the stylish attacking display his Coventry City players put on against Sheffield United is the template for how he wants the team to play from now on.
Exciting and pleasing on the eye, the performance is one the Coventry City boss is determined that his side will produce more of following a bedding-in period when the players got used to what he expects from them.
“The way we played Saturday is the way I want us to play,” said Boothroyd, who has always resented the ‘route one’ label he has been saddled with since his days at Watford.
“I want us to attack and go behind the opposition when they drop off, keep the ball and play across the pitch.
"And I said to the players this week, that is what I am after, and if we can maintain that, or a variation of that, then we will certainly win more than we lose.
“They were enjoying it and that takes time and I still feel we are nowhere hear where we can be. For me, I think it is always a question of style and efficiency. But if you put style before efficiency when you go into a new club then you are going to have a problem.
“That’s just my way – rightly or wrongly – I always go for efficiency and then style because that way you have always got something to fall back on if you don’t play particularly well.
“And that’s what we are all working to do here and then you have the framework in place and everyone can express themselves within that framework.”
Asked if his game plan will be a little more cautious away from home at top of the table QPR on Sunday, he said: “No, I think it is a game that QPR will think they can win and their league position would suggest that they should win, but it is a game where we have got to be 100 per cent right and stick to what we work on.
Add a commentRecommend “I think it is going yo be an exciting game and it is going to be a tight game but certainly a game we can get something from.”
City played some impressive football against Neil Warnock’s men in the Christmas fixture at the Ricoh which they lost 2-0 in a similar game to last weekend’s match against the Blades in terms of the number of chances created but no goals scored.
“We gave them a good hiding in the first half but didn’t score,” he said reflecting on the defeat by Rangers.
“We had great chances but Paddy Kenny was their best player and I am saying that a lot just lately.
“So we can go into that game full of confidence but at the same time we need to prepare properly because they are a good team and the league leaders who are there for a reason.
“They are the team to beat at the moment and they have dipped a little bit as well but because they have got such a great lead people aren’t recognising it so we have to take advantage of that.”
Meanwhile, skipper Lee Carsley has begun his journey back to fitness with the first of two dates with the surgeon.
