Keane axed by Ipswich Published 23:00 06/01/11 By Dave Allard - EXCLUSIVE
Roy Keane was last night sacked as Ipswich manager.
Keane was given the news by chief executive Simon Clegg, following a meeting with chairman and owner Marcus Evans.
The former Manchester United skipper has presided over one of the stormiest periods in Ipswich’s history.
Last season, his first full one in charge, saw the Suffolk club battle relegation. This time they started brightly, but a dismal losing run has left them just three points off the drop zone.
The campaign has been littered with tales of in-fighting and unrest among fans. Keane, who led Sunderland to the Premier League, at one stage accused Ipswich fans of “knowing nothing about the game”.
After last Monday’s 1-0 home defeat by Nottingham Forest, he had to be pulled away from protesting fans by stewards. As he made for the tunnel, Keane made gestures to the crowd.
Evans gave Keane a £1.5million-a-year contract and cash to spend in the transfer market.
But, £10m later, the once-proud Suffolk club of Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson, are languishing near the Championship trap-door.
The 39-year-old Keane had six months of a two-year contract to run.

Amazing! The QPR way would be "Keane Terminated..." and "The club will have no further comment"
Ipswich Official Statement ROY KEANE LEAVES IPSWICH TOWNPosted on: Fri 07 Jan 2011 Ipswich Town Football Club has agreed an amicable termination of Roy Keane's role as first team manager.Roy took up his position at Portman Road in April 2009 on a two-year contract stating an ambition to return the Club to the Premier League within that period. Club owner Marcus Evans said, "I would like to put on record my thanks to Roy for his commitment to try and bring success to Ipswich Town Football Club during his time at Portman Road. I would like to wish him every success for the future." Club CEO, Simon Clegg added, "Today is a sad day for me. I have enjoyed working with Roy over the past two seasons and I would like to thank him for his tremendous dedication and professionalism during that period. Regrettably though, we have not made the progress that we had all expected over the last 20 months and this season in particular with the side slipping to 19th place in the Championship table." www.itfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10272~2260582,00.html

KEane... Guardian I would have turned it around at Ipswich, says disappointed Roy Keane • 'I have a genuine belief we were making progress' • Manager regrets timing ahead of Carling Cup semi-final * * Paul Chronnell Roy Keane Roy Keane was in charge for 20 months at Portman Road, but his side could not find consistent form. Photograph: Frances Leader/Action Images Roy Keane has revealed his disappointment at his sacking by Ipswich Town, saying that he believed he was on the verge of turning the Championship club's season around only to be relieved of his duties last night. Keane released a statement through the League Managers' Association in which he also stated that he felt Ipswich reaching the Carling Cup semi-final, in which they face Arsenal next week, was evidence of the improvement of the side under his management. "I'm hugely disappointed to be leaving Portman Road," said Keane. "Results haven't been as good as I'd have hoped so far this season and when results aren't good the manager gets the sack, that's the game. "However, I have a genuine belief that we were making progress and that the players have what it takes to turn this season around. "We were preparing well for our visit to Chelsea on Sunday and then our Carling Cup semi with Arsenal. Getting to that semi proves what I know the team is capable of. "I was also working hard to build the squad during the transfer window, looking at our options to attract new players to the club. I have loved my time at Ipswich, living locally to the club with my family, and have a massive respect for the club, its staff, the fans and the community and I wish them well." Keane, 39, had been in charge of Ipswich since April 2009, but after a winning start to the current campaign, their form has suffered of late and they slipped to 19th place in the Championship table following the 1-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest on Monday. Richard Bevan, the chief executive of the LMA, said: "Roy is one of the most committed and dedicated managers in the game and without a doubt leaving Ipswich will be very disappointing for him. Roy's departure, though, typifies him, in his honest and forthright appraisal of his departure. "This season's run with the club in the Carling Cup is testament to his ability in getting the best out of his team in big games and it is disappointing that he has not been given the opportunity to lead out Ipswich in their first cup semi-final for thirty-odd years." Paul Jewell is the favourite to replace Keane, the former Bradford and Wigan Athletic manager having been out of work for two years since leaving Derby County in December, 2008. www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/jan/07/ipswich-roy-keane
