QPR vs Port Vale 1 - 3 QPR bowed out of the Carling Cup with a 3-1 defeat against an impressive Port Vale in W12. Justin Richards stunned the hosts by putting Vale into a first-half lead, sending the ball home into the bottom right-hand corner following Sean Rigg's exquisite lobbed through pass. And 1-0 was soon two going into the half-time break, following Rigg's smashed effort that went in off the leg of Fitz Hall. Article continues Advertisement R's gaffer Neil Warnock looked to freshen things up at the break when he introduced Antonio German for Josh Parker, though Vale put the tie beyond the Hoops' reach on 48 minutes after Richards added his second from close range. German did have some impact on the tie when he smashed home an effort in off the post on 62 minutes, but his goal was only a consolation for the home team. The R's lined-up in a changed 4-4-2 formation for the visit of Micky Adams' Port Vale. Paddy Kenny was in goal for Rangers. Bradley Orr started at right-back in defence, with Captain Hall and Matt Connolly in the centre and Gary Borrowdale on the left. In midfield, Hogan Ephraim and Parker were deployed on the flanks, while Shaun Derry was joined by Mikele Leigertwood in the centre of the park. Jamie Mackie was partnered by Leon Clarke up front, who was making his first competitive start in R's colours since his move from Sheffield Wednesday in the summer. Just under seven minutes had passed on the clock before the R's fashioned the first shot on target - and it was a chance that they should have taken. Connolly was the architect, weaving his way past a whole host of challenges, before sliding Clarke through on goal down the right. In acres of space, Clarke looked up from 10-yards out before lashing an effort in on target, but his shot was too close to Stuart Tomlinson, who beat the effort away before the ball was cleared up field. Only minutes later, the Valiants raced up the other end - and only the underside of the crossbar prevented them from taking a first-half lead. Gary Roberts played creator, sending over a sublime, in-swinging corner from the right on to the head of Anthony Griffith, who rose highest before sending in a header that rattled the bar before the ball was cleared away. In drenched conditions more suitable to April than August, the R's continued to drive forward, and they were almost rewarded for their positive start with a goal. Ephraim and Mackie combined beautifully on the left-hand side of the penalty area, before the latter smashed an effort just over the bar. Moments later, the R's went even closer. A ball from deep found Mackie on the right-hand byline, and the R's forward danced his way past two players before drilling a low effort straight at the keeper. The majority of chances were falling the way of QPR, though they were left stunned on 30 minutes when Vale took a first-half lead. Rigg picked the ball up midway into the R's half before dinking a pass over the top of the R's defence to send Justin Richards clean through on goal. Richards took the ball into his stride as he approached the target and kept his cool to tuck the ball home from 18-yards out past Kenny and into the bottom left-hand corner. Five minutes later, and Vale silenced Loftus Road with a second goal. Midfielder Rigg received the ball on the left-hand side of the box after patient passing play from the away team, and he looked up before sending home an effort that deflected up off Hall before nestling into the roof of the net. The R's should have pulled one back just before half-time. Hall's lovely cross-field ball was controlled superbly by Parker out on the left, and the winger - one-on-one with Vale's Tomlinson - could only fire in an effort that the keeper tipped on to the post for a corner kick. In an attempt to get back into the tie, Warnock decided to freshen things up by introducing German for Clarke at the half-time interval. Though Rangers' task was made all the harder when Vale added a third with their first shot on target in the second period. Loft received the ball just outside the area, before letting fly with a low, driven effort that was too hot for Kenny to handle, and when the ball fell to Justin Richards, he made no mistake to add his second and Vale's third goal of the affair. The R's thought they had pulled a goal backed on 56 minutes when Connolly nodded home Borrowdale's corner from the right, but referee Mr Sutton deemed that the QPR defender had unfairly out-jumped his opposite number. Six minutes later, however, the R's finally opened their account through German. Connolly and Mackie combined well down the right before the latter of the two slid the ball into the area for German, whose spin and shot smashed against the foot of the right-hand post before going over the line for Rangers. QPR almost added a second on 73 minutes. Leigertwood's cross from the right eventually bounced up into the path of Mackie, who could only drag a shot wide with the goal at his mercy from 12 yards. QPR: Kenny, Orr, Derry (Oastler 63), Hall, Leigertwood, Clarke (German 46), Mackie, Connolly, Ephraim, Borrowdale, Parker (Rose 63). Subs: Cerny, Faurlin, Brown, Ehmer. The Rangers boss made five changes to the side which opened the Championship season so impressively with a thumping 4-0 win over Barnsley on Saturday. But his fringe players did themselves few favours as two goals from Justin Richards and one from Sean Rigg ensured a big shock in soggy west London. Rangers had already been given a warning when John McCombe crashed a header from Gary Roberts' corner onto the crossbar. And they fell behind after half an hour when Rigg's chip split the home defence and summer signing Richards raced clear to tuck away his first goal for Vale. Things got worse five minutes later when Doug Loft played in Rigg, who opened his Vale account by cutting inside and driving left-footed past Paddy Kenny. Whatever Warnock said at half-time did not have the desired effect as his side went three behind two minutes after the restart when Kenny spilled Loft's long-range shot and Richards was on hand to double his tally with a tap-in. Rangers defender Matt Connolly thought he had pulled one back when he headed in Gary Borrowdale's corner but referee Gary Sutton blew for a push. The hosts did find the net with half an hour remaining when substitute Antonio German's angled drive went in off both posts. Warnock's side sensed a potential comeback and poured forward, but Jamie Mackie and Romone Rose blazed wide as Vale held out for a famous win. soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=293869&cc=5901

Ealing Gazette - Yann Tear
Tame Rangers humbled and out Aug 10 2010 By Yann Tear RANGERS made an embarrassing early exit from the Carling Cup against a team two divisions below them to quickly puncture Saturday's euphoria. Rangers were a pale shadow of their opening day selves during an abject first half in which Mikele Leigertwood and Shaun Derry were frequently overrun in midfield by livelier opponents. They found themselves two down at the break and three down soon after and although they stirred themselves at last with an Antonio German goal, it was not enough to spark a revival. Anthony Griffith and Doug Lift were particularly dominant for the visitors, while Sean Rigg was nearly always involved as ambitious Vale flooded forward at every opportunity. Rigg it was who set up Justin Richards for the opening goal on 30 minutes after Derry had surrendered possession in the centre circle – Richards racing forward unopposed to calmly slip the ball past Paddy Kenny in goal. And Rigg it was who drilled in the second from the left edge of the penalty area six minutes later as the Rs defence backed off and dithered in the face of a side buoyed by the scent of a giant killing. Debutant Leon Clarke – who should have scored after 11 minutes when Matt Connolly's surge from half way gave him a clear target. Keeper Stuart Tomlinson smothered that effort and Clarke – still not fully fit according to Neil Warnock on Saturday – faded out of the game. Antonio German came on for Clarke after the interval. The change made no immediate difference. Three minutes into the second half when the effervescent Loft's low shot from distance was spilled by Kenny and Richards tapped in his second of the night. But German did get on the scoresheet after 62 minutes – latching onto a Connolly pass and firing in off both posts – although it needed a linesman's say so to confirm the ball had crossed the line. Romone Rose's introduction for a labouring Derry made a difference to Rangers, who were far livelier after pulling a goal back, but apart from a glaring Jamie Mackie miss, clear-cut chances were rare www.uxbridgegazette.co.uk/west-london-sport/qpr/2010/08/10/tame-rangers-humbled-and-out-64767-27037637/

QPR Official Site
WARNOCK ON PORT VALE Posted on: Tue 10 Aug 2010 Neil Warnock admitted that his side's inability to take their chances ultimately cost them in their 3-1 defeat to Port Vale at Loftus Road. Justin Richards netted twice for the Valiants, with Sean Rigg also on the scoresheet to the put the away side three goals to the good after just 48 minutes. Antonio German added a consolation for the R's on 62 minutes, but Warnock told http://www.qpr.co.uk: "I just felt that Port Vale took their chances. "We had some great chances in the first half. The goalkeeper pulled off two good saves. "It shows that we're a little bit thin on the ground, really, in terms of back-up to the first XI. The young lads are going to try, but its goals that win games. "We should have been 1-0 up with a great opportunity for Leon, and then we went to sleep for the first two goals. "When we look at it from our point of view it's very poor. But it tells you a story that we haven't got a massive squad." Warnock added: "I'm still looking at bringing some players in, absolutely. It showed tonight - if we want to be at the top end of the table then we've got to improve the squad. "We've done a lot of hard work and brought six or seven in, and that's a big change around in one summer. "But you've only got to look at the bench tonight and see that we're so thin on the ground. We're still looking for a couple of front runners and a utility player." www.qpr.co.uk/page/TheGaffer/0,,10373~2117931,00.html

Didn't go to the game. But there is no excuse to lose as easily as we didn with the team that we put out. Warnock needs get his act together. Because to be honest I have been completely underwhelmed by him so far.

Dear colin, wake up and smell the roses. Picking up "free" players is never going to get this club anywhere unless you've caught an exceptional player coming off contract. Someone like Beckford or Hooper. Playing a reserve side was always a hiding and an exit, just ask Alex Fergusson. Perhaps you should have followed my advice from yesterday, just shut the F*** up and get on with the job. So is Fitz Hall still better than John Terry? Would Marlon King have scored for us? I think NOT to both of your comments on these two in particular. So now you have successfully negotiated an early exist for our club. Less income, well done. I guess now, we can concentrate on the League eh? Yes, another old chestnut needing to be said too!

Five Championship managers to be fired in the morning? Or does no-one give a toss about the Carling Cup? The latter, I think.

Vlaed deserved this. Played neat, passing football with pace. We were well off the pace & played 'shadow football' whenever Vale had the ball near our box. The marking for the first tow goals was non existent. Both Connolly & Hall had good games with the ball at their feet, but were both exposed defensively. To go into a game without a striker who could hold the ball up was a major flaw. Clarke should have scored, faded and was embarressing. Why Borrowdale, when he receives the ball does not want to run into space, is a mystery. Ephraim was a major disappointment and on two occasions had an attack of the 'hissy fits'. If that was Tarrabt, we'd all be up in arms. Orr was average, but at least he can cross a ball. Kenny, well, I was unimpressed and I usually defend goalkeepers! I just hope that it's the time he has spent out of the game that is the problem here. I would have played Cerny though. The youngesters failed to take their chance. At least Rose had a turn of pace and was direct. Only Mackie came out of the game with any credit. Without the first choice spine of the side we looke, well, spineless at times! And yes, it seems as if Championship managers can't give a toss about the Carling Cup either.

Derry was poor, back to how he looked against Plymouth (Slow, couldn't pass to a teammate and caught in possession way too many times). Leon Clarke, well what can I say? If I ever see him in the hoops again I might have to ask KLR if I can borrow his petrol and matches (though I will be good and do it in the new smoking area behind the Loft!) Was good to finally meet Finn before the game, shame the result wasn't so good... Oh, and QBP if you are reading this (which of course you aren't!!!) I was the guy who tapped you on the shoulder and said hi in Uxbridge Road............ ;D ;D ;D Oh well, at least we can concentrate on the league now.......

Warnock doing his bit to bolster the morale of QPR's Reserve players!Paul Warburton/Ealing Gazette
QPR lack depth says Warnock QPR boss Neil Warnock bemoaned the lack of a quality squad as his makeshift side crashed out of the Carling Cup at the first time of asking to League Two Port Vale. The Championship side routed Barnsley 4-0 on Saturday, but making five changes from that team ithat ncluded academy graduate Josh Parker and later Antonio German and Joe Oastler - Warnock and Rs paid the price. "We're four or five players short of a squad," said the manger, "and this game showed what we have in reserve - which is not a lot actually."Even though German pulled one back when the score was 0-3, the other consolation for QPR's boss was not having to scratch his head too hard before naming a team to face Sheffield United on Saturday back in the league. He added: "We created enough chances - maybe seven or eight against Vale - and you've got to put some of those away. I can't see anyone from the reserves pushing themselves forward for the first team - other than Martin Rowlands when he's fit."www.ealinggazette.co.uk/sport/football-ealing/qpr-ealing/2010/08/10/qpr-lack-depth-says-warnock-82029-27038385/

We haven't much in reserve?
But we've bought players at the rate of one a week for the past 5 years.
Where have they all gone, these quality signings funded by our millionaire billionaires?

I think it is disingenuous for Warnock to say that if we took our chances we could have won. Vale outplayed us in practically every department, they also should be rueing a few missed oppurtunities.
What this shows is that we have absolutely no depth. Something I was banging on about prior to the season starting. Hall looked woeful yet again, I'm sorry but I have never seen him play well for us, where are these magnificient games he must have that so impresses people at the club?
Legs was terrible, should be a RB or nowt. Derry again was poor. I hadn't realised Clarke was on the pitch until he went off, Kenney is looking more and more nervous after each game; he'll enjoy Saturday I imagine! The younger players were ok but really weren't helped out by their elders, and the less said about Borrowdale the better; the only left footed player to shy away from whipping a left footed cross in.
Afterwards I saw Connolly chatting to Paladini which has soured my opinion of him(!) and Ephraim forget his wallet or some such and had to wander back to the changing room, he really is quite small.

Port Vale: Boss Micky Adams hails his Carling Cup heroes MICKY Adams hailed his Port Vale heroes after masterminding a sensational 3-1 Carling Cup win at Championship side QPR last night. Vale progressed to the second round of the competition at Loftus Road, thanks to a double from striker Justin Richards and Sean Rigg's strike. Adams's League Two side were worthy winners against a team fancied to mount a promotion challenge. "I thought we acquitted ourselves well and it was a fantastic performance – we thoroughly deserved the victory," said Adams. "What pleased me most was our attitude, confidence and our belief in ourselves. "This squad, with those characteristics, are as good as anyone at our level and perhaps we played better than our level in this match. "I know I've got battlers in my dressing room and terrific leaders. Now we'd love a big tie in the next round." Adams switched from his preferred 4-4-2 system to a 3-5-2 following their opening day 1-0 league win at Bury on Saturday. It was a system which also helped Vale pull off Carling Cup shocks against Championship duo Sheffield United (2-1) and Sheffield Wednesday (2-0) last season. "I picked the same starting line-up, but changed the system, which may have surprised QPR because they have watched us and paid us a lot of respect," added Adams. "But I went with the formation which served us so well against Championship sides last season. "I thought QPR may have tried to bombard us, which they did, and they had a couple of chances. But Stuart Tomlinson kept us in the game a couple of times. "But other than that, we dominated for long periods in terms of possession and also scored some good goals." Adams also saluted goal hero Richards, who found the net for the first time since arriving from Cheltenham during the summer. "I've watched Justin a few times and he's a confidence player," explained Adams. "He needs that belief in himself, but I've got no doubts about him at all." Richards hit 15 goals for Cheltenham last season and was delighted to open his Vale account on the big occasion. "It's great to get my first goals against a Championship side," said the 29-year-old. Meanwhile, Adams is set to strengthen his squad after revealing he expects to sign an unnamed midfielder on loan tomorrow. www.thisisstaffordshire.co.uk/news/Port-Vale-Adams-hails-cup-heroes/article-2513708-detail/article.html
