QPR OFFICIAL SITE - EXCLUSIVE: DERRY AGREES DEAL Posted on: Tue 22 Jun 2010Queens Park Rangers Football Club are delighted to announce an agreement has been reached to sign Shaun Derry on a two-year deal from July 1st. The 32 year-old, who successfully captained Crystal Palace to Championship survival last term, will join on a free transfer. Speaking exclusively to www.qpr.co.uk, Warnock said:"I felt we needed another type of midfielder to what we already have. "If we are going to be successful this season we need to cover every avenue. "I know Shaun well. He is a very good professional who will benefit the team." Derry, who has vast Premier League experience, is relishing the challenge ahead, commenting: "I'm delighted to reach agreement with the Club. "There's a very talented group of players already here. "When QPR came to Palace at the end of last season, in my own opinion, they were the best side we played at Selhurst Park. That was the kind of performance Neil will want from us next season. "The aim has to be to compete at the top - the top two ideally. We've definitely got the ability and the quality to get into the Premier League." Derry added: "Neil was a big sway. When he comes calling, you have to consider what he brings to the table and I really like working with him. "He knows what he wants and he's got a way of getting the best out of people. Whenever I've played under him, I've played my best football and long may that continue." Derry will join his new team-mates when they report for pre-season training on July 1st. www.qpr.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10373~2076370,00.html

SHAUN DERRY: IN PROFILE Posted on: Tue 22 Jun 2010Tough-tackling midfielder Shaun Derry started his career as a trainee with Notts County, making his debut for the Magpies in 1995/96. Born in Nottingham, the 32 year-old would go on to make 94 appearances at Meadow Lane before departing for Sheffield United in 1998, in a deal thought to be worth around £700,000. Derry spent two years with the Blades - playing 84 times - before moving to the South Coast to join Portsmouth in 2000 in a £300,000 deal, under then boss Tony Pulis. He would eventually go on to be made skipper at Fratton Park, before Harry Redknapp deemed Derry surplus to requirements after taking over as Pompey Manager in 2002. With that, the midfielder opted for a move to Crystal Palace that same summer in a £400,000 move to Selhurst Park. Derry played an integral part in the Eagles' return to the Premier League, starring for the South London side in their 1-0 Championship Play-Off Final win over West Ham United. Palace's return to the top-flight meant that Derry's chances were limited in midfield, however, and led to him returning to his hometown for a loan spell in 2005 with Nottingham Forest. Following his loan spell at the City Ground, Kevin Blackwell swooped to bring the midfielder to Leeds United. It wasn't the end for Derry and Crystal Palace, though, and following 78 appearances at Elland Road, Neil Warnock acquired the services of the midfielder - initially on loan - in a permanent switch for £150,000 back in 2007. Derry made 129 outings in his second spell south of the capital, skippering the Eagles to safety in difficult circumstances last season after Palace were placed into administration, and with it suffered a ten-point deduction. www.qpr.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10373~2076376,00.html

I am pretty sure either/or/both Gavin and Rowly are broken so getting an experienced combative defensive midfielder on a free is good business IMO.

Jeez....
Here's an idea - why don't we see how he plays for us before slagging him off? Novel I know but why not give it a try?

We've seen him play and on his best day he's a squad player in a position we have depth

As a captain, Derry will bring much-needed character and leadership to the squad, and he's the type of hard-working fighter that successful teams have in abundance.
If Warnock's aiming for a good squad of 22-25 players, Derry certainly fills a strong role within this group

He is probably brought in as a replacement for Mahon and/or Rowlands, if so we don't have depth in that position. We also lacked a leader on the pitch last season. Good signing in my opinion, especially on a free, and not on a 4 year contract...

Any update on Rowlands and Mahon?

"A different type"... interesting description.
A move to a more "holding in midfield" style of play on the cards?
Increase %possession? Decrease goals against?
Warnock style?
Doesn't necessarily mean the end for Mahon or Rowlands, but he could end up as Captain.

I have no major problem with this signing. It's who else we have not signed (at least as of yet) that's the problem. We're not trying to avoide relegation or consolidate: We're aiming for promotion and for that, we need some goals... Who are the two forwards who together will get 35 or 40 goals in the Championship next season? Or the two midfielders who togther will get another 15 or 20? QPR Official Site

One of my favourite Palace players. Congratulations to you it will be a massive loss for us IMO.
Sean is tough, hard hitting hard working player. A leader and gentleman off the pitch. Will be greatly missed here at SE25.
When the chips are down, he is the exact guy you want around you.
Good luck Dezza

I will say that I saw Derry last year in 2 games and he looked slow and had a poor touch and our midfield played round him all game. He may have had a couple of bad games but he looked shot to me.

I agree about getting some real goalscorers, but it might be that it is much easier to land this signing compared to those goalscorers that everyone wants. Hopefully it is just a case of tougher negotiations before we sign those badly needed players. Warnock told us he wanted to sign better strikers, if he doesn't I believe that tell us a lot about the ambitions of the board.

The game with yourselves at home Sean was sporting x amount of cards and one more yellow would have seen him miss our final games. Seeing that we were in administration and fighting for our lives and Championship survival, I guess Sean chose the option to take extreme caution that day. I agree, that match he looked poor but the reasons were understandable. In addition Tarrabat looked the nuts

Reckon he will do well for us.
& signing players like this means we will be more "professional" than at certain points last season, overweight players that thought Real Madrid were going to sign them & all this nonsense, I would rather sign the Shaun Derrys of this World than some deluded overweight playboys, which lets face it, we had a few too many of last season. Shaun Derry is a good signing for the level we play at, Paddy Kenny, Shaun Derry, this is the way the manager is doing things, its good news & a step up for us.
