Argyle will lose £2m if relegated
Wednesday, April 14, 2010
RELEGATION from the Championship this season would cost Plymouth Argyle around £2 million in Football League TV and title sponsorship deals.
That is the stark financial reality facing the Pilgrims should they slide into League One.
For a club which reported a loss of £2.8m for the year ending May 2009, it would be another crippling blow.
The Football League is nearing the end of the first season of a three-year £264m TV contract with Sky Sports and the BBC.
Each club in the Championship will receive £2.5m per season for the duration of that lucrative deal.
But that figure falls to £640,000 for League One outfits.
That is a differential of £1.86m between clubs in the Championship and League One, and is an unpalatable prospect for Argyle.
The Football League have also recently secured a three-year, £21m title sponsorship contract with energy firm Npower.
They will take over from soft drinks company Coca-Cola from the start of the 2011/12 season.
According to Football League sources, the share-out of the money from the new title sponsorship deal with Npower has yet to be decided.
But clubs in League One are sure to receive considerably less than those in the Championship.
Season ticket revenue and commercial income would also be hit should Argyle be relegated.
The Pilgrims are 23rd in the Championship, five points from a position of safety, with three more games remaining this season.
Next up is a Sky-televised clash against champions-elect Newcastle United at Home Park on Monday (7.45pm).
Argyle will probably need to win all of their last three games to escape the clutches of relegation to League One.
Newcastle will be roared on against Argyle by the massed ranks of the 'Toon Army.'
The Magpies have already sold more than 1,600 of their initial allocation of 2,000 tickets.
That is despite the fact the match is being screened live by Sky, and it involves an 820-mile round trip from Newcastle.
HERALD Sport understands former Argyle manager Paul Sturrock is no longer working at Home Park in a business support role.
However, the Pilgrims have yet to officially confirm his departure.
