SOUTHGATE IN £1.5M CASH BONUS ROW
By Martin Hardy, 12/12/2009
MIDDLESBROUGH bosses have told Gareth Southgate to forget about picking up a one-year cash bonus for getting the club relegated.
Southgate has asked the League Managers' Association - who opposed his appointment in 2006 - to get him a lump sum pay-off.
The 39-year-old had two years left on his contract at the Riverside Stadium when he was sacked in October.
The small print said he was entitled to 12 months' pay, not the full remainder of his deal.
And Boro believed he would accept the payment of around £1.5million over 12 months, effectively picking up his salary as normal.
But Southgate, who is desperate to return to management and has been heavily linked with QPR following Jim Magilton's suspension, wants the money NOW.
He is demanding a one-off payment to end his eight-year ties to Boro and the LMA will act for him.
But club officials are privately fuming at what they say is a change of heart.
And they will dig their heels in to fight the possibility of having to find the cash just months after losing their Premier League status.
Boro's income fell by more than £35m following relegation.
A Riverside Stadium insider said: "The club didn't want it to come to this. They shook hands after Gareth was relieved of his duties and thought they had an agreement in place to pay the final year of his contract over 12 months.
"They are livid now that he is taking such a stance. They wanted the situation to be amicable.
"Gareth served the club with great honour as a player and they didn't want the relationship soured.
"But they will fight him all the way on this one.
"He's already picked up £15m from his time with the club and he left them in a lower division.
Southgate's successor Gordon Strachan meanwhile has called for more time as he bids to arrest Middlesbrough's woeful home form against Cardiff today.
"It takes a lot of work to develop the team you want to," he said. "It took Sir Alex Ferguson five years so I don't see why I should do it in five weeks, but if I can do it in five weeks, fine.
"It's rather strange that you can go from doing so well away from home to doing so badly in the space of four days.
"I've never seen such a drop in form anywhere else. It's a strange one. We're looking into it and what we can do to be more consistent.
"You think about what you're doing and we're putting things into operation on the training field to make it right."
